Book excerpt: At present fishing for salmon in Norwegian home water is carried out with drift nets, bag nets, bend nets, lift nets and stake nets in the sea, and mainly by rods in the rivers. Catch statistics have been collected since 1876, but reliability of the statistics is questionable. The rates of exploitation on many Norwegian salmon stocks are very high, and data are presented and discussed for River Laerdal, River Eira and River Imsa stocks. As a result of this heavy exploitation with nets, the frequency of net-marked salmon entering rivers is high especially for griIse, although most net-marked salmon are only slightly damaged. It is suggested that mortality of salmon that are net-damaged hear or in brackish water is relatively small compared with salmon that escape from nets on the high seas. Book excerpt: The 1980 Atlantic salmon recreational fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador was one of the more successful on record. Anglers harvested 42,460 Atlantic salmon with an effort of 109,280 rod days. CUE was 0.39. Angling effort in insular Newfoundland increased by 26% over 1979 but was comparable with the 1975-79 mean effort of 101,965 rod days. Total catch for insular Newfoundland was up by 19% over 1979 and 12% over the 1975-79 mean catch. Catch and effort in Labrador declined slightly in comparison with the 1979 catch and 1975-79 mean catch. Numbers of large salmon angled in 1980 was 2811 which is double the 1979 catch and 28% higher than the 1975-79 mean catch. This may suggest some recovery in large salmon stocks in the province. High water levels provided good angling conditions in 1980.

Book excerpt: The Atlantic salmon recreational fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador took 36,457 fish in 1979. Angling effort was 87911 rod days and catch per unit effort 0.41. Total catch was up from 1978 but number of large salmon angled was the lowest on record. Angling effort was down by 15% from 1978 possibly due to river closures which resulted from low water levels and high water temperatures. The Atlantic Salmon Management Program introduced in 1978 remained in effect and a lower bag limit for the recreational salmon fishery was instituted.
