Book Syntaxe th orique et formelle Volume 1 Mod lisation unit s structures

Download or read book Syntaxe th orique et formelle Volume 1 Mod lisation unit s structures written by Sylvain Kahane and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Conceived as a general introduction to syntax, this book presents the basic concepts necessary for a study of the combination of lexical and grammatical units within an utterance. The book does not impose a preconceived framework, but rather examines the various possibilities for the representation of syntactic structures, according to the general principles and specific criteria that have been adopted. The aim of this book is to provide a basis for teaching syntax at university, and to show that it is possible to identify the properties of languages in a methodical way and to put order in the jungle of each language. The book is divided into three parts: How to develop the model of a language? How to determine the basic units of a language according to their meaning, form, and combinatorial nature? How to define and represent the different ways in which the units are organized? This last part presents an abundance of syntactic diagrams of a wide range of types. The book is divided into small sections, alternating the main content with insights, historical notes, formal elaborations, linguistic examples in diverse languages, proposals for further reading, and exercises with answer keys. Kim Gerdes and Sylvain Kahane have been collaborating for 20 years and have published together more than 40 articles. They have been interested in different aspects of the syntax of languages. After working on formal modeling of word order in German and French, they started in 2008 to develop annotated corpora in dependency syntax for spoken French, focusing both on theoretical problems of dependency analysis and on questions more specifically raised by oral productions, notably concerning the limits of syntax.

Book Microparametric Syntax and Dialect Variation

Download or read book Microparametric Syntax and Dialect Variation written by James R. Black and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Kayne's introduction to this volume stresses that comparative work on the syntax of very closely related languages and dialects is a research tool promising to provide both a broad understanding of parameters at their finest-grained and an approach to the question of the minimal units of syntactic variation. The 11 articles in this collection demonstrate the use of this tool in analyzing microparametric variation, principally with reference to Chomsky's Minimalist program, in a variety of languages. Topics include se/si constructions, hypothetical infinitives and adverbial quantifiers in French and other Romance languages; that-trace variation, Scandinavian possessive constructions, reflexives and subject-verb agreement in Icelandic & Faroese, and verb clusters in continental West Germanic dialects; anaphoric agreement in Labrador Inuttut; negative particle questions in Chinese; imperative inversion in Belfast English; and the second person singular interrogative in the traditional vernacular of Bolton.

Book Lexique Syntaxe et Lexique Grammaire Syntax Lexis Lexicon Grammar

Download or read book Lexique Syntaxe et Lexique Grammaire Syntax Lexis Lexicon Grammar written by Christian Leclère and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-29 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Gross, who died in December 2001, was a pioneer and leading thinker in the field of modern linguistics. Long before computers could facilitate large-scale, lexically-based language study, he and his team began building an exhaustive, empirically-based inventory of the "lexicon-grammar" of French which, thirty years later, still remains the most complete syntax-based lexicon available. Researchers all over the world have adopted the Gross model of description, which serves as a computational model for any language. As can be seen in the contributions in this volume, it has been applied to languages as different as Arabic, Chinese, English, Greek or Korean (as well as the major Romance languages, of course). In this volume the reader will also find a number of articles by eminent linguists who were close friends of Maurice Gross, and frequently in dialogue with him on linguistic issues. No matter whether they shared his theoretical views, or his particular empirical methods of description, they each had great respect for his work, especially for the close-grained linguistic analysis which has set a benchmark for future generations.

Book excerpt: TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS is a series of books that open new perspectives in our understanding of language. The series publishes state-of-the-art work on core areas of linguistics across theoretical frameworks as well as studies that provide new insights by building bridges to neighbouring fields such as neuroscience and cognitive science. TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS considers itself a forum for cutting-edge research based on solid empirical data on language in its various manifestations, including sign languages. It regards linguistic variation in its synchronic and diachronic dimensions as well as in its social contexts as important sources of insight for a better understanding of the design of linguistic systems and the ecology and evolution of language. TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS publishes monographs and outstanding dissertations as well as edited volumes, which provide the opportunity to address controversial topics from different empirical and theoretical viewpoints. Book Metaphor and Translation

Download or read book Metaphor and Translation written by Dorota Śliwa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the ideas put forward at an international conference on Metaphor and Translation held at the University of Toulon, France, in June 2017. The bilingual nature of the contributions here provides an insight into recent linguistic theories from both the English- and French-speaking worlds. This diversified approach is further enhanced by contributors being based in a large number of countries worldwide and working on different language combinations. The kinds of problem areas investigated here include a wide range of themes. They cover aspects ranging from methodological and theoretical issues to specialist areas such as literature, culture and the economy. Whatever the theoretical approach applied, the findings come up with interesting and useful conclusions as to how metaphor is translated in the types of discourse analysis proposed. As a result, this volume will be of interest to both scholars and students involved in metaphor studies and translation, as well as to professional translators wishing to keep track of recent theories and practical issues in the field.

Book Aspects of the Theory of Syntax

Download or read book Aspects of the Theory of Syntax written by Noam Chomsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1969-03-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chomsky proposes a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes recent developments in the descriptive analysis of particular languages into account. Beginning in the mid-fifties and emanating largely form MIT, an approach was developed to linguistic theory and to the study of the structure of particular languages that diverges in many respects from modern linguistics. Although this approach is connected to the traditional study of languages, it differs enough in its specific conclusions about the structure and in its specific conclusions about the structure of language to warrant a name, "generative grammar." Various deficiencies have been discovered in the first attempts to formulate a theory of transformational generative grammar and in the descriptive analysis of particular languages that motivated these formulations. At the same time, it has become apparent that these formulations can be extended and deepened. The major purpose of this book is to review these developments and to propose a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes them into account. The emphasis in this study is syntax; semantic and phonological aspects of the language structure are discussed only insofar as they bear on syntactic theory.

Book Description and Measurement of Bilingualism

Download or read book Description and Measurement of Bilingualism written by Louis G. Kelly and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1969-12-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1967 the Canadian National Commission for Unesco and the Université de Moncton jointly sponsored an international seminar on bilingualism. Although 1967 was Canada's centennial year, the seminar was concerned only incidentally with bilingualism in Canada. Instead, bilingualism was considered as the essential element in communication between language irrespective of national boundaries. Participants included linguists, psychologists, and sociologists. The report shows that the interdisciplinary discussions carried on at Moncton were fruitful; that significant questions about bilingualism were raised and an improvement in communication between specialists from different traditions, languages, and cultures were effected. This volumes makes a valuable contribution toward establishing a general theory of bilingualism.
