Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Anger Coping Training (ACT) Program With Physically Aggressive Children: A Treatment Outcome Study Submitted by FUNG Lai-chu, Annis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in June 2004 Numerous studies have linked aggression during childhood with long-term maladjustments and anti-social behavior. Despite the alarming rise of aggression and violence in Hong Kong, there has been no evidence-based outcome study on anger control intervention. Aggression hinders development in the child and creates numerous problems in the family, school and community. The researcher reviewed the etiology of childhood aggression from the ecosystemic model, and implemented an indigenous Anger Coping Training (ACT) program for children aged 8-10 with physically aggressive behavior and their parents. Based on cognitive-behavioral therapy, the parent-child parallel group ACT program aimed to help reactively aggressive children in restructuring cognitive characteristics, reducing hostile attributional bias, increasing anger coping methods, and enhancing problem-solving abilities. In addition, the program sought to assist in developing parenting skills and styles in order to manage children's aggressive behaviors effectively, and decrease parental stress from dealing with aggressive children. This research program involved experimental and control groups with pre- and post- comparison using a mixed model research method. Qualitative data collection of the children's behavior, as well as the parenting styles and behaviors were assessed through structured interviews (children, parents and teachers); peer interactions; and the utilization of hypothetical scenarios. Quantitative data collection consisted of the completion of reliable self-report questionnaires, the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Parent Stress Index (PSI), and the Child Behavior Checklist Teacher's Report Form (CBCL-TRF). Two pilot studies and the main study were conducted in cooperation with a professional team at St. James Settlement, which consisted of two social workers who served as facilitators of the parent and child groups. 18 out of 34 applicants were selected and divided between two experimental groups and one control group in accordance with the rule of randomization. There were no significant differences in the pre-treatment scores, and none of the demographic variables were statistically different among those three groups. Evidence demonstrated that the randomization in this study was effective. The effectiveness of the ACT program has been consistently verified. In post- intervention and follow-up studies the treated children showed a consistent reduction in their physically aggressive behavior; however, there was no obvious decline in their verbally aggressive behavior. Furthermore, findings showed that physical and verbal pro-social behaviors were increased in treated children. In conclusion, the ACT program was effective in lessening children's physically aggressive behavior, but not verbal aggression. For the parent component, the results of the PSI indicated that the ACT program was ineffective in reducing parental stress. Anger management is a skill that everyone needs and uses to some degree, in just about every situation. This webpage contains information about my ebook on this subject, anger management techniques, anger management tips and anger management training. It turns out anger management can be taught to almost everyone. I’ve taught it to children, as well as adults. I’ve taught techniques to schizophrenics and to people with out-of-control mood disorders. Anyone can learn about this subject and anyone can learn to manage anger. You may be having trouble in your relationship, or blowing up at work. You may be referred by the courts, which happens if your anger leads to excessive drinking or fighting, custody issues, etc.. I’ve read most of the pop-psychology literature on anger management over the last 30 (+) years. Many of the books are excellent. They, like this ebook deal with a variety of anger management aspects. Anger has to do with being out of control of reactions, or about being out of touch with feelings. Type I anger people "lose it" and act out. Type II anger people lose it and "act in." Type I anger people explode, while Type II anger people implode. There are characteristics and symptoms of each, which I list and explore. Type II anger is a NEW concept. You won't find this described anywhere else, because its my original idea. People have a long list of reasons not to control their anger, which is addressed. There are lots of popular or other internet sources for anger management techniques. I list them. These work, sort of, and if they work for you--good. Your anger problem is not that serious. But there are deeper, psychological approaches that fix, not mollify the problem. To effectively manage anger (either Type I or Type II), one has to get to the "deep stuff." Most of the pop-psychology books are too long. I’ve boiled down the concepts in these books into clear, manageable steps. I’ve made this as easy to understand as is humanly possible, combining what I’ve read with what I’ve learned from clients. Plus, there is a discussion on the newest ways to conceptualize anger mismanagement, relative not just to psychology, but to cognitive behavioral techniques and mindfulness. Like my other ebooks, this one has no fat. Think of it as a "Cliffs Notes" publication. It's "sort of" a quick read (about an hour or two). I have to explain a few new terms, because there are new ideas and the terms you probably already know are put together in new ways. The theory I espouse is different from standard "behavior change" books. It works better and is very simple to understand. That's the point of an ebook. My research has not turned up another ebook that does what mine does.
