Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the nation’s first orphanage for African American children, founded in New York City nearly two centuries ago. This book uncovers the history of the Colored Orphan Asylum, founded in 1836. Through three wars, two major financial panics, a devastating fire during the 1863 Draft Riots, several epidemics, waves of racial prejudice, and severely strained budgets, it cared for orphaned, neglected, and delinquent children, eventually receiving financial support from such renowned New York families as the Jays, Murrays, Roosevelts, Macys, and Astors. While the white female managers and their male advisers were dedicated to uplifting these children, the evangelical, mainly Quaker founding managers also exhibited the extreme paternalistic views endemic at the time, accepting advice or support from the African American community only grudgingly. It was frank criticism in 1913 from W.E.B. Du Bois that highlighted the conflict between the orphanage and the community it served, and it wasn’t until 1939 that it hired the first black trustee. More than 15,000 children were raised in the orphanage, and throughout its history letters and visits have revealed that hundreds if not thousands of “old boys and girls” looked back with admiration and respect at the home that nurtured them throughout their formative years. Weaving together African American history with a unique history of New York City, this is not only a painstaking study of a previously unsung institution but a unique window onto complex racial dynamics during a period when many failed to recognize equality among all citizens as a worthy purpose. In its current incarnation as Harlem-Dowling West Side Center for Children and Family Services, it continues to aid children (albeit not as an orphanage)—and maintains the principles of the women who organized it so long ago. “Scholars and general readers interested in New York history, race relations, social services, [or] philanthropy . . . will benefit from this work.”?Social Sciences Reviews

Book excerpt: Angels of Mercy: Far West & Far East follows the gripping stories of two different Australiannursing sisters, who overcame the challenging adversities of two very different circumstances. In the 1930s, Marjorie Silver was employed by The Far West Childrens Health Scheme andbecame their first permanent flying sister, based in Bourke. She fought a single-handed waragainst heat, dust and isolation of the outback to bring vital medical assistance to the far west ofNew South Wales, before moving on to central Queensland where she established a clinic at MtMargaret station, in close co-operation with the flying doctor, based at Charleville. In 1964, shemoved to Brunette Downs, Northern Territory, where she continued to make use of her nursingskills at the Aboriginal Camp and in the stations hospital. This previously untold story alsoinvolves the topical Nancy Bird, who was employed as the sister's pilot for the first nine months.Whilst Sister Silver was fighting a battle against the harsh elements of the bush, anotherdedicated woman of about the same age had graduated as a nursing sister with a view tooverseas travel. Little did she know that she would shortly embark on a sea voyage to the exoticFar East, where she would engage in a battle for survival as an unwilling guest of the Emperor ofJapan. Sister Pat Gunther joined the AIF and served in the Far East on the battlefield of Malayaand Singapore. She was captured and taken prisoner at Bangka Island, Sumatra. The story of thenurses imprisoned in various camps in Sumatra is not unknown, but this book delves far deeperthan any other story to date and reveals the 'secret' that the nurses kept throughout their lifetimes. Author and military historian Lynette Ramsay Silver has an entire 'forensic' chapter devoted to the unravelling of this secret. This book has been compiled from their edited memoirs, supplemented by various conversations and interviews. Interspersed throughout the book and printed in italics, are Lynette Ramsay Silvers historical details providing additional narrative to compliment first-hand accounts. The book also lists, for the first time, the name of every nurse who served in WW2. It also includes the fate of other internees that Sister Pat had met in Malaya and during her three years of captivity and the fate of the nurses evacuated from Singapore. It also includes the 29 women that served as doctors in the Australian Army Medical Corps during World War 2, as well as the names of the women who served as nursing sisters in the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Airforce, Australian Army Nursing Service and the Army Hospital. Angels of Mercy: Far West & Far East is a tribute to the huge contributions made by our nurses in the Australian Outback, and to those who served during wartime.

Download or read book Angels The Seen and Unseen written by Joseph J. Randazzo and published by Elohim Inc.. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Angels have not always existed, GOD created them, and He did so before He even made the universes. Angels are beings who have greater power and ability than humankind. They exist and appear in physical form or spiritual here on earth or in the heavens with a level of existence higher than the physical universe. Thus, some levels of Angels are also referred to as spirits and known as the “Unseen.” When we observe and meet up with these messengers doing supernatural things, there is no complete understanding how they do these miracles as heavenly beings. However, those who believe it GOD the Fathers know these private messengers, work for the ultimate benefit to help evolve humans century after century and live and walk among us. Angels may work hard to guard the people they are assigned to protect from danger. Stories about Angels rescuing people facing destructive overbearing situations are popular in our culture. Some people from religious traditions like Catholicism believe that everyone has a guardian Angel divinely assigned to them for their entire life. Angels in worldly religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam state that an important part of the Angels’ work is to worship the GOD who created them, such as by praising him in heaven. Some religions, such as Islam, state that all Angels serve GOD faithfully. Other religions, such as Christianity, state that some Angels are faithful to GOD, while others have rebelled against him and are now known as demons and the evil ones. Angels are mentioned 273 times in the Bible referencing special messages, unique events, unexplainable miracles, promoting creational benevolence or following orders of death and destruction, hence Sodom and Gomorrah. The Bible states some Angels are GOD’s messengers and likewise beware the Bible also states some Angels are GOD’s Spiritual Army, telling us about facts not to forget of such legions of warring Angels with unlimited capacities. Some Angels have been described as “participants” in the creation and providential continuance of the cosmos though out the Heavens. Clement of Alexandria, influenced by Hellenistic cosmology, mentioned that the functions and the moving of the stars and control the four elements such as, earth, air, fire and water are controlled by GOD’s assigned participating hierarchy of Angels. There are NINE (9) distinct types of Angels identified in biblical scripture. We know by popularity the Archangels are the most recognizable, however reviled in the Bible are many more Angel types whose functions are assigned to protect, care and inspire the humankind on earth. Both in the Old and in the New Testament, we see Angels have been named numerous times and each have a key position and chain of command in GOD’s plan in addition to belonging to the army of GOD thought out the Universes. Angels are interwoven within the culture of man regardless of religion or your belief system, become informed in this study about “Angels” – “The Seen and Unseen”. “The things visible and the things invisible,” Beware of a stranger you meet, it may be an Angel, by Joseph J.
