Book excerpt: David A Lass’s introduction to angelfish fulfills its subtitle, “Understanding and Keeping Angelfish,” and more. This colorful guide in the Fish Keeping Made Easy series discusses angelfish in their natural Amazon rain forest habitat in South America and the needs of this beautiful and recognizable fish in the home aquarium based on their dietary, water conditions, and behavior in the wild. The chapter “Angelfish Groups” describes the three species of angelfish (Pterophyllum altum, P. leopoldi, and P. scalare), the most popular twelve color variations seen in local pet stores, and the special traits of the species. Separate chapters are devoted to selection and care, feeding and diet, and reproduction. The author discusses the keeping of angelfish in an “all-angel” tank (shoal of angelfish!) as well as in a community tank, and gives solid advice on selection of equipment and live plants. A chapter on parasites and diseases will be of great use to all fishkeepers trying to avoid fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases in their tanks as well as general treatment protocols and hospital tanks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angelfish Care: The Complete Guide to Caring for and Keeping Angelfish as Pet Fish The Angelfish (scientifically known as Pterophyllum) is a small genus of freshwater fish from the Cichlidae family. The Angelfish originates from the Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin and various other rivers located in the tropical South America. Angelfish have laterally compressed and round bodies with elongated triangular dorsal and anal fins. This elongated and thin body shape allows the Angelfish to camouflage itself between plants and roots. Wild Angelfish will normally have vertical stripes on their bodies to further aid in the camouflaging process. The camouflage allows for the Angelfish to efficiently hide from predators and ambush smaller fish it preys upon. Captively bred Angelfish come in a wide variety of colorations and scale design due to selective breeding which stems from the popularity of the Angelfish genus. Here at Fish Care Manuals we are passionate about fish care. As a brand we have a strong idea of what makes up a good fish care book. Book Handbook on European Fish Farming

Download or read book Handbook on European Fish Farming written by Ergün Demir and published by Tudás Alapítvány. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture is one of the fastest way to produce animal protein for growing population in the World. Aquaculture is the art, science, and business of producing aquatic plants and animals useful to humans. Fish farming is an ancient practice and date back as far as 2500 BC. In Europe, fish raised in ponds became a common source of food during the Middle Ages. Today, aquaculture plays a major role in global fish supply. Today, the global community faces financial and economic crisis, climatic changes and the pressing food and nutrition needs of a growing population with finite natural resources. As the world’s population continues to increase over the coming decades, and global living standards rise, demand for fish is set to keep on growing. With most wild capture fisheries already fully exploited, much of that new demand will have to be met from aquaculture. According to FAO estimates, more than 50 % of all fish for human consumption now comes from aquaculture. Aquaculture is one of the most resource-efficient ways to produce protein. Fish come out well because, in general, they convert more of the feed they eat into body mass than livestock animals. Salmon is the most feed-intensive farmed fish to convert feed to body weigt gain and protein followed by chicken. Aquaculture is the controlled cultivation and harvest of aquatic organisms. Most commonly grown are finfish and shellfish, but other aquatic organisms are also cultivated such as seaweed, microalgae, frogs, turtles, alligators, and endangered species. There are many similarities between aquaculture and agriculture, but there are some important differences as well. Aquaculture, like agriculture, is necessary to meet the food demands of a growing global population with diminishing natural fisheries stocks. Aquaculture and agriculture are both farming. However, aquaculture is farming in the water and therefore requires a different set of knowledge, skill, and technology.
