Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The “remarkable” (Ken Burns), “utterly absorbing” (Forbes) Civil War classic that inspired the film Gettysburg, with more than three million copies in print “My favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant.”—James M. McPherson In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history, two armies fought for two conflicting dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Bright futures, untested innocence, and pristine beauty were also the casualties of war. Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece is unique, sweeping, unforgettable—the dramatic story of the battleground for America’s destiny.

Book Archangel Michael Superhero

Download or read book Archangel Michael Superhero written by Ben Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is about Christians, written for spiritually-minded people, by a Christian author, me. It is a faith-based fantasy and is about what might happen after we arrive in Heaven. The Archangel Michael is not a fantasy according to the Bible (KJV). Imagine if you can, Michael, Heaven's version of Batman, and Daniel Downey Davenport, the newest entrant to Heaven, the Robin character, form a Delta Force and go on a search and destroy mission. Their mission becomes an intergalactic search and rescue struggle against Satan and his Mark of the Beast Army, like Saving Private Ryan. If you remember The First Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom, and are an action/adventure fan, you will like this one.God's Host Commander, the Archangel Michael,, and Daniel, battle their way across the universe fighting Satan's evil plan to destroy Christianity and replace God.The story begins with an action-packed battle between the Host and Satan's forces. Then we meet Daniel on his first day in Heaven. He, like most of us, wonders what a soul does for the rest of eternity. To his delight, he finds that Heaven has five categories of 'helping others' type of careers. Daniel chooses to join God's Army, the Host, which is mentioned in the Bible (KJV) Book of Revelation. Daniel's wait for action is short. Michael already has an urgent mission for him.One of Michael's investigative teams has gone missing on Titan, Saturn's largest moon. Titan is inhabited by strange looking humanoids. Intelligence reports confirm Titanites are being kidnapped, tortured, and killed if they don't join Satan's Mark of the Beast Army. Something goes wrong when Alex and Naomi, key squad leaders are captured by Satan and moved off Titan. The captives are in great danger. A galactic race against time begins.Follow Daniel and Michael as they cover exotic places across Earth and the Universe in their battles against the Mark of the Beast Army, demons and Satan's monsters from Hell, in their desperate efforts to free Alex and Naomi. Pre-publication readers say this: Reader One - Just finished the book and I loved it so much!! I felt extremely uplifted to know that as a child of God, I AM a warrior in His army on earth!I !oved the last 2 sentences in the book, made me smile to see the simple truth of who we are in Jesus close out this wonderful work! Now, let's have the sequel, please. Reader Two: I've never read anything like this in my life. I've always enjoyed sci-fi movies but never books. But I'm so glad I have had this experience. Being a religious person, I have to say it expanded the way I envisioned the powers of angels and the way they may work in our lives and the jobs or services they would be in charge of. Reader Three:I'm thoroughly entertained. I've never read a fiction piece that brought me this close to Christ-- good job !!!!!!!! I loved the emphasis on Christian prosecution and suffering and the heavenly activity between the host and Satan. It brought aspects of the Christian mission back into view for me. I love the battle for good and evil exist in outer space. Your worlds were very relatable to Earth; their hedonistic patterns and diversity. I ended reading this book trusting God more. I feel uplifted completely drawn closer to Christ. I loved it and I'm not just saying that.

Book excerpt: Return to the quaint little town of Peaceful, Wisconsin, from Karen Wiesner's award-winning Family Heirlooms Series, where you first met and fell in love with these colorful, lovable friends. Now you can read the stories of those secondary characters in an all-new spin-off series. Nuggets of faith can be passed down as heirlooms from friend to friend, heart to heart, soul-mate to soul-mate. Book Two Friendship Heirloom: Courage As the unwanted son of a mother who killed herself to escape a life she couldn't bear another second and then being passed around from one foster family to the next, each less sympathetic than the one before, Michael Fremont has had it drilled into him from birth that he's not worth anything...certainly not worth saving. Then he met the angel next door. LeeAnn Wagner was as small and fragile as a china doll, the unfortunate offspring of a couple more volatile than gasoline and a lit match. Together, Michael and LeeAnn escaped the horrors of their childhoods and gave their lives to the Lord. But Michael had realized that his love and needs for LeeAnn were only growing beyond his control. Feeling like a coward, he did the only thing he could to save her from his possibly unwanted desires: he joined the military. There he'd made close friends in Christ and unburied the very discipline and willpower he'd struggled to grasp while he was with LeeAnn every minute of every day. Never once during their years apart does Michael forget his angel...or forgive himself for leaving her just when she seemed to need him most. The last thing he expects upon honorable discharge is to find that the frail creature he'd reluctantly left behind for what's felt like a lifetime has discovered her own considerable strengths, abilities, and deep, inner happiness. Can she forgive him? Can she ever get over the scars of her past to see him as the man of her heart? One worthy of an angel? LeeAnn has loved Michael since the moment his gentle eyes met hers. When he left, she thought she'd never survive. But she'd realized soon afterward that she needed the separation as well—to become the fearless, godly woman he needs, now more than ever; to become what he's been to her right from the start: a healer and guide, a light in the darkness, a friend who would never abandon or destroy. And maybe now that she and Michael are whole, not hiding from the world, barely able to imagine surviving together or apart, they can become lovers... But LeeAnn isn't sure how to fully overcome a past that refuses to remain in her darkest nightmares. Even as she and Michael's most fervent, uncertain dreams are coming true, the harbinger of her childhood is waiting in the shadows, murderously intent on taking away everything she's ever wanted.

Download or read book Jos Can You See written by Alberto Sandoval-Sánchez and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In two acts, complete with overture and intermission, Alberto Sandoval-Sánchez shines his spotlight on representations and stereotyping of Latinos on stage. In act one, José Can You See? scans the way Latinos get typecast on Broadway and in popular culture--from enduring icons like Carmen Miranda and Desi Arnaz to full-scale musicals like West Side Story and A Chorus Line. In act two Sandoval-Sánchez offers a fresh perspective on how Latinos/as represent themselves in their own theatrical productions by introducing a whole body of relatively unknown Latino plays. Suggesting that all these plays pose a response to popular culture's stereotypes, he discusses the ways in which Hispanic theater both confronts the dangers of assimilation and validates Latino traditions and culture.

Book Guy Mannering

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walter Scott
  • Publisher : Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 624 pages

Download or read book Guy Mannering written by Walter Scott and published by Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guy Mannering, or The Astrologer, first published in 1815, was Walter Scott's second novel. Guy Mannering only half-believes in his art, but does believe in the ability of his patriarchal power, wealth and social position to sort out social confusion. However he has to learn the limits of a nabob's authority in a society that (in the 1780s) is no longer a single hierarchy but has many subsets, each with its own laws - gypsies, smugglers, Edinburgh lawyers, the Border store farmer, the traditional landowner. Guy Mannering is set at the time of the American Revolution, and represents a Scotland at once backward and advanced, patriarchal and commercial, traditional and modern, a country in very varied stages of progression. This is the first modern edition of one of Scott's finest works. It is based on the first edition, but is corrected from the manuscript, and restores around two thousand readings lost through error or misunderstanding. For the first time it includes Scott's extended portraits of the Edinburgh literati which were unaccountably omitted from the printed version.

Book The Girl Who Could Fly

Download or read book The Girl Who Could Fly written by Victoria Forester and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-06-24 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You just can't keep a good girl down . . . unless you use the proper methods. Piper McCloud can fly. Just like that. Easy as pie. Sure, she hasn't mastered reverse propulsion and her turns are kind of sloppy, but she's real good at loop-the-loops. Problem is, the good folk of Lowland County are afraid of Piper. And her ma's at her wit's end. So it seems only fitting that she leave her parents' farm to attend a top-secret, maximum-security school for kids with exceptional abilities. School is great at first with a bunch of new friends whose skills range from super-strength to super-genius. (Plus all the homemade apple pie she can eat!) But Piper is special, even among the special. And there are consequences. Consequences too dire to talk about. Too crazy to consider. And too dangerous to ignore. At turns exhilarating and terrifying, Victoria Forester's debut novel has been praised by Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga, as "the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men...Prepare to have your heart warmed." The Girl Who Could Fly is an unforgettable story of defiance and courage about an irrepressible heroine who can, who will, who must . . . fly. This title has Common Core connections. Praise for Victoria Forester and The Girl Who Could Fly: "It's the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men. I was smiling the whole time (except for the part where I cried). I gave it to my mom, and I'm reading it to my kids—it's absolutely multigenerational. Prepare to have your heart warmed." Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga "In this terrific debut novel, readers meet Piper McCloud, the late-in-life daughter of farmers...The story soars, just like Piper, with enough loop-de-loops to keep kids uncertain about what will come next....Best of all are the book's strong, lightly wrapped messages about friendship and authenticity and the difference between doing well and doing good."--Booklist, Starred Review "Forester's disparate settings (down-home farm and futuristic ice-bunker institute) are unified by the rock-solid point of view and unpretentious diction... any child who has felt different will take strength from Piper's fight to be herself against the tide of family, church, and society."--The Horn Book Review The Girl Who Could Fly is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.
