He had only been graduated from the army's flight program ten months and did not yet possess the flight experience befitting the multiple flight decisions required of this flight. Not only did Dean need to deal with the flight environment but had to come to terms with the unfortunate decision matrix that he used to fly in the first place. Dean quickly realized that he had first to understand his flight conditions before he could modify emergency procedures designed to save his life. To his horror, Dean had never come to grips with the plane crash that killed his father, twin, and two additional passengers fourteen years earlier. That traumatic event was haunting him this day while dealing with the environmental conditions that were trying to kill them all on this flight. The two flights' parallel is uncanny. There is enough background provided to allow the reader a glimpse into the unique and sometimes disastrous Doudna early years. The author does his best to remind the readers that God is the real hero. At every turn, the Holy Spirit whispers solutions, guiding Dean with decisions decades ahead of his ten-month flight experience. There are plenty of human-interest stories scattered throughout the novel to give the reader a rest bit from the life-threatening drama that plays out in the cockpit. Dean continued his career where he served thirty-five years active duty in the army. Upon retirement from the army as a CW5, was selected to be the Government Flight Representative, where he served for another eleven years risk mitigating and approving the maintenance procedures and flights for all of Fort Rucker's 650 helicopters. He retired in 2015 and felt compelled to tell this story.

This book looks at the unit's history through the eyes of its most successful pilots and leaders, detailing both their exploits and their personal experiences. When the 82nd Fighter Group was organized in March 1942, most of its initial pilot cadre was comprised of newly graduated staff sergeant pilots of Class 42-C – enlisted men! They learned to fly the P-38 at Muroc, in California's Mojave Desert, and then moved to the Los Angeles area to continue their training and to serve as part of its air defence. In September 1942 the group was transported to the East Coast, from where it shipped out to Ireland on the Queen Mary. By this time all its remaining sergeant pilots had been commissioned. As this book outlines, as of VE-Day the 82nd Fighter Group's score of confirmed aerial victories stood at 548 aircraft shot down, plus a huge amount of enemy materiel – including aircraft – destroyed on the ground and the sea. It had been awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations. The cost of this success was high, however, for around 250 of the group's pilots had either been killed in action or captured.

Book excerpt: Gustave Doré and the Modern Biblical Imagination explores the role of biblical imagery in modernity through the lens of Gustave Doré (1832-83), whose work is among the most reproduced and adapted scriptural imagery in the history of Judeo-Christianity. First published in France in late 1865, Doré's Bible illustrations received widespread critical acclaim among both religious and lay audiences, and the next several decades saw unprecedented dissemination of the images on an international scale. In 1868, the Doré Gallery opened in London, featuring monumental religious paintings that drew 2.5 million visitors over the course of a quarter-century; when the gallery's holdings travelled to the United States in 1892, exhibitions at venues like the Art Institute of Chicago drew record crowds. The United States saw the most creative appropriations of Doré's images among a plethora of media, from prayer cards and magic lantern slides to massive stained-glass windows and the spectacular epic films of Cecile B. DeMille. This book repositions biblical imagery at the center of modernity, an era that has often been defined through a process of secularization, and argues that Doré's biblical imagery negotiated the challenges of visualizing the Bible for modern audiences in both sacred and secular contexts. A set of texts whose veracity and authority were under unprecedented scrutiny in this period, the Bible was at the center of a range of historical, theological, and cultural debates. Gustave Doré is at the nexus of these narratives, as his work established the most pervasive visual language for biblical imagery in the past two and a half centuries, and constitutes the means by which the Bible has persistently been translated visually.
