Book excerpt: In the curious realm known as the Wasteland, positioned precariously between heaven and hell, the pendulum of good and evil oftentimes swings in unforeseen and unanticipated directions. It is in this oddity of mankinds own making that choices, with respect to choosing good over evil or vice versa, hold center stage. For there is surely unremitting evil in the world, but the real question remaining is whether or not there is the requisite quantity of good to overwhelm it. Contained herein are accounts from the Wasteland that address this simple conundrum.

  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Arguing with Angels written by Egil Asprem and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating work explores John Dee's Enochian magic and the history of its reception. Dee (1527–1608/9), an accomplished natural philosopher and member of Queen Elizabeth I's court, was also an esoteric researcher whose diaries detail years of conversations with angels achieved with the aid of crystal-gazer Edward Kelley. His Enochian magic offers a method for contacting angels and demons based on secrets found in the apocryphal Book of Enoch. Examining this magical system from its Renaissance origins to present day occultism, Egil Asprem shows how the reception of Dee's magic is replete with struggles to construct and negotiate authoritative interpretational frameworks for doing magic. Arguing with Angels offers a novel, nuanced approach to questions about how ritual magic has survived the advent of modernity and demonstrates the ways in which modern culture has recreated magical discourse.

Book Wittgenstein s Secret Diaries

Download or read book Wittgenstein s Secret Diaries written by Dinda L. Gorlée and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig Wittgenstein's works encompass a huge number of published philosophical manuscripts, notebooks, lectures, remarks, and responses, as well as his unpublished private diaries. The diaries were written mainly in coded script to interpolate his writings on the philosophy of language with autobiographic passages, but were previously unknown to the public and impossible to decode without learning the coding system. This book deciphers the cryptography of the diary entries to examine what Wittgenstein's personal idiom reveals about his public and private identities. Employing the semiotic doctrine of Charles S. Peirce, Dinda L. Gorlée argues that the style of writing reflects the variety of Wittgenstein's emotional moods, which were profoundly affected by his medical symptoms. Bringing Peirce's reasoning of abduction together with induction and deduction, the book investigates how the semiosis of the emotional, energetic, and logical interpretations of signs and objects reveal Wittgenstein's psychological states in the coded diaries.

Book Graham Greene s Journeys in Spain and Portugal

Download or read book Graham Greene s Journeys in Spain and Portugal written by Carlos Villar Flor and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s and 1980s, Graham Greene adopted the yearly habit of touring Spain and Portugal in the company of his Spanish friend, the priest and university professor Leopoldo Dur?n. The most outstanding fruit of these trips, almost always in summer, was the inspiration for his major Hispanic novel, Monsignor Quixote (1982), a celebration of friendship above ideological, political, or religious differences, incorporating allusions to Cervantes' famous comic novel within a critical vision of post-Franco Spain. Graham Greene's Journeys in Spain and Portugal: Travels with My Priest reconstructs each of Greene's trips through the Iberian Peninsula between 1976 and 1989, detailing their preparations, itineraries, anecdotes, companions, topics of conversation, and often surprising repercussions. Carlos Villar Flor outlines the trips' biographical importance and fills numerous gaps of documented information on this final phase of Greene's life. His detailed inquiry into Greene's Iberian adventures with Dur?n also helps us better to understand the genesis and resonances of Monsignor Quixote, which over time became Greene's favourite of his own novels, and the subsequent television adaptation. The book also addresses incidents and aspects that, for one reason or another, never emerged in Dur?n's own account of their travels together, Graham Greene: Friend and Brother (1994). These include the possible motivations for Greene's first visit to Spain, related to his role as an informant for MI6; the mysterious visits to an old English lady located in Sintra; the writer's attempts in the early 1980s to establish links with Spanish socialists; or the fascinating story of a Spanish nobleman's suspicious proposal to create a Greene Foundation. Ultimately, Greene's trips to Spain and Portugal appear as more layered and intriguing than Dur?n's account suggests, whilst Dur?n himself emerges aptly as a complex and quixotic figure--as much the protagonist of this book as Greene.

Book The Beloved Does Not Bite

Download or read book The Beloved Does Not Bite written by Debra Dudek and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new monograph, author Debra Dudek defines a new era of vampire texts in which vampires have moved from their iconic dark, feared, often seductive figure lingering in alleys, to the beloved and morally sensitive vampire winning the affections of teen protagonists throughout pop culture. Dudek takes a close look at three hugely-popular vampire series for young adults, drawing parallels between the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Twilight Saga novels/films, and The Vampire Diaries TV series/book series. By defining a new era of vampire texts and situating these three series within this transition, The Beloved Does Not Bite signals their significance and lays the groundwork for future scholarship on the flourishing genre of paranormal romances for young adults.
