Book Anecdotes and Annals of the Deaf and Dumb Classic Reprint

Download or read book Anecdotes and Annals of the Deaf and Dumb Classic Reprint written by Charles Edward Herbert Orpen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes and Annals of the Deaf and Dumb The first edition, consisting of one thousand copies, was published at my own expense and risk and on finding, that when between five and six hundred copleb were either sold or given away, the produce was sufficient to cover all ex penses, I thought the best use to be made of the remaining capies, namely between four and five hundred, was to disperse them all over the world; in order to excite attention every where to the condition of the Deaf and Dumb. With this object, I accordingly sent them, through the various Missionary Societies of Great Britain, the United States and the Netherlands, to nearly all their Missionary stations throughout the world, directed to one or more of the principal Mission aries, in each place, as the persons most likely to feel an interest in a kindred cause and this re sult will be produced, I expect, every where, by the work; so that I trust it may prove in very deed the Herald and the Apostle of the Deaf and Dumb, throughout the four quarters of the globe. Book American Annals of the Deaf and Dumb 1848 Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Annals of the Deaf and Dumb, 1848, Vol. 1 The school of De l'epee was conducted entirely at his own expense, and, as his fortune was not large, he was compelled to practice the most careful economy. Still, he was unwilling to receive pecuniary aid, or to admit to his instructions the deaf and dumb children of wealthy parents. It is not to the rich, he said, that I have devoted myself; it is to the poor only. Had it not been for these, I should never have attempted the education of the deaf and dumb. The fear of being charged with mercenary motives doubtless led him to refuse the aid of the wealthy, for the bare suspicion of being actuated by such motives, was exceedingly painful to his sensitive mind. One or two anecdotes, introduced at this point, will serve to show how little liable he was to be dazzled by opportunities for person al aggrandizement. In 1780, the ambassador of the Empress of Russia paid him a visit, to congratulate him upon the success which had follow ed his exertions, and to offer him valuable presents in the name of that sovereign. Mr. Ambassador, said the Abbe', I'never receive money, but have the goodness to say to her Majesty that if my labors have seemed to her worthy of any consideration, I ask as an especial favor, that she will send to me from her do minions, some ignorant deaf and dumb child, that I may instruct him. Book Writing Deafness

Download or read book Writing Deafness written by Christopher Krentz and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an original approach to American literature, Christopher Krentz examines nineteenth-century writing from a new angle: that of deafness, which he shows to have surprising importance in identity formation. The rise of deaf education during this period made deaf people much more visible in American society. Krentz demonstrates that deaf and hearing authors used writing to explore their similarities and differences, trying to work out the invisible boundary, analogous to Du Bois's color line, that Krentz calls the "hearing line." Writing Deafness examines previously overlooked literature by deaf authors, who turned to writing to find a voice in public discourse and to demonstrate their intelligence and humanity to the majority. Hearing authors such as James Fenimore Cooper, Lydia Huntley Sigourney, Herman Melville, and Mark Twain often subtly took on deaf-related issues, using deafness to define not just deaf others, but also themselves (as competent and rational), helping form a self-consciously hearing identity. Offering insights for theories of identity, physical difference, minority writing, race, and postcolonialism, this compelling book makes essential reading for students of American literature and culture, deaf studies, and disability studies.
