Book Celtic Shakespeare

Download or read book Celtic Shakespeare written by Rory Loughnane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing together some of the leading academics in the field of Shakespeare studies, this volume examines the commonalities and differences in addressing a notionally 'Celtic' Shakespeare. Celtic contexts have been established for many of Shakespeare's plays, and there has been interest too in the ways in which Irish, Scottish and Welsh critics, editors and translators have reimagined Shakespeare, claiming, connecting with and correcting him. This collection fills a major gap in literary criticism by bringing together the best scholarship on the individual nations of Ireland, Scotland and Wales in a way that emphasizes cultural crossovers and crucibles of conflict. The volume is divided into three chronologically ordered sections: Tudor Reflections, Stuart Revisions and Celtic Afterlives. This division of essays directs attention to Shakespeare's transformed treatment of national identity in plays written respectively in the reigns of Elizabeth and James, but also takes account of later regional receptions and the cultural impact of the playwright's dramatic works. The first two sections contain fresh readings of a number of the individual plays, and pay particular attention to the ways in which Shakespeare attends to contemporary understandings of national identity in the light of recent history. Juxtaposing this material with subsequent critical receptions of Shakespeare's works, from Milton to Shaw, this volume addresses a significant critical lacuna in Shakespearean criticism. Rather than reading these plays from a solitary national perspective, the essays in this volume cohere in a wide-ranging treatment of Shakespeare's direct and oblique references to the archipelago, and the problematic issue of national identity.

Book Shakespeare s Theatre and the Dramatic Tradition

Download or read book Shakespeare s Theatre and the Dramatic Tradition written by Louis Booker Wright and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a brief discussion about the characteristics of William Shakespeare's stages, the history of Elizabethan theaters, the physical conditions of the stage, the composition of the companies of actors, the influence of the physical nature of the stage upon the quality of the drama, and many other related topics. The plays of Shakespeare during his lifetime were performed on stages in private theaters, provincial theaters, and playhouses. His plays were acted out in the yards of bawdy inns and in the great halls of the London inns of court. Although the Globe is certainly the most well known of all the Renaissance stages associated with Shakespeare and is rightfully the primary focus of discussion, this work includes a brief introduction to some of the other Elizabethan theaters of the time in order to provide a more complete picture of the world in which Shakespeare lived and worked.

Book Riches and Reform

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bess Rhodes
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2019-08-26
  • ISBN : 9004347992
  • Pages : 221 pages

Download or read book Riches and Reform written by Bess Rhodes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scottish Reformation is often presumed to have had little economic impact. Traditionally, scholars maintained that Scotland’s late medieval church gradually secularised its estates, and that the religious changes of 1560 barely disrupted an ongoing trend. In Riches and Reform Bess Rhodes challenges this assumption with a study of church finance in Scotland’s religious capital of St Andrews, a place once regarded as the ‘cheif and mother citie of the Realme’. Drawing on largely unpublished charters, rentals, and account books, Riches and Reform argues that in St Andrews the Reformation triggered a rapid, large-scale, and ultimately ruinous redistribution of ecclesiastical wealth. Communal assets built up over generations were suddenly dispersed through a combination of official policies, individual opportunism, and a crisis in local administration, leading the post-Reformation churches and city of St Andrews into ‘poverte and decay’.
