Book The Leopard the Lion and the Cock

Download or read book The Leopard the Lion and the Cock written by Matthew Stanard and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thought-provoking reflection on culture, colonialism, and the remainders of empire in Belgium after 1960 The degree to which the late colonial era affected Europe has been long underappreciated, and only recently have European countries started to acknowledge not having come to terms with decolonisation. In Belgium, the past two decades have witnessed a growing awareness of the controversial episodes in the country’s colonial past. This volume examines the long-term effects and legacies of the colonial era on Belgium after 1960, the year the Congo gained its independence, and calls into question memories of the colonial past by focusing on the meaning and place of colonial monuments in public space. The book foregrounds the enduring presence of “empire” in everyday Belgian life in the form of permanent colonial markers in bronze and stone, lieux de mémoire of the country’s history of overseas expansion. By means of photographs and explanations of major pro-colonial memorials, as well as several obscure ones, the book reveals the surprising degree to which Belgium became infused with a colonialist spirit during the colonial era. Another key component of the analysis is an account of the varied ways in which both Dutch- and French-speaking Belgians approached the colonial past after 1960, treating memorials variously as objects of veneration, with indifference, or as symbols to be attacked or torn down. The book provides a thought-provoking reflection on culture, colonialism, and the remainders of empire in Belgium after 1960.

Book Raising Lions

  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2021-09-28
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Raising Lions written by Joe Newman and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Joe Newman's acclaimed book Raising Lions is an essential guide for parents and teachers raising strong-willed, precocious children. It offers clear insights into what motivates the most challenging behaviors, and what kinds of responses turn these behaviors around. "One of the best books on child-rearing I've ever read. Joe Newman describes a cultural shift that has reinforced anxiety and behavior disorders in children by negating parental authority. Even more important, he provides specific, non-punitive ways for parents to help their kids by taking back their authority. Filled with examples and experiences from the author's own life as a child with A.D.H.D., the book is a treasure-trove of useful information." Barry Michels, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Tools. "This book is packed with useful information. It is an insightful and practical guide for managing children. I would recommend it to any parent." L. Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus Ph.D. University of Minnesota Current childrearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured, and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in our children's behavior. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence and individuality. Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems and find new ways to support healthy, happy development. For over 20 years Joe Newman has worked with children, parents, teachers, and administrators to help them understand and improve child behavior.

Book Remembering Lions

Download or read book Remembering Lions written by Margot Raggett and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - The stunning fourth book in the Remembering Wildlife charity series - The aim of the creators is to make the most beautiful photographic book ever seen on a species and to use that to raise awareness of the plight facing that animal and also funds to protect it - Features images generously donated by many of the world's top wildlife photographers (including six overall winners of Wildlife Photographer of the Year) - All profits from the sale of this book will be donated to projects working to protect lions in Africa The history of lions has been entwined with mankind for millions of years and they are surely the most celebrated of all animals. But, thanks to that same mankind who professes to revere them, their numbers have declined by half in the last quarter of a century alone. Wild lions are now just found in sub-Saharan Africa and a small pocket in India, with only around 20,000 left. The rapid reduction in the number of lions is one of the least-known stories in conservation, because their slaughter often happens out of sight. This book aims to open the eyes of the world to their plight before it's too late. Remembering Lions is the fourth book in the Remembering Wildlife fundraising series, which has so far raised more than USD $800,000 for conservation. The aim of the creators is to make the most beautiful book ever seen on a species and use that to raise awareness of the plight facing that animal and funds to protect it. Each book is full of images generously donated by many of the world's top wildlife photographers. All profits from the sale of this book will be donated to projects working to protect lions in Africa.
