  • Author : Nathan Crowe
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2021-12-07

Download or read book Forgotten Clones written by Nathan Crowe and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before scientists at the Roslin Institute in Scotland cloned Dolly the sheep in 1996, American embryologist and aspiring cancer researcher Robert Briggs successfully developed the technique of nuclear transplantation using frogs in 1952. Although the history of cloning is often associated with contemporary ethical controversies, Forgotten Clones revisits the influential work of scientists like Briggs, Thomas King, and Marie DiBerardino, before the possibility of human cloning and its ethical implications first registered as a concern in public consciousness, and when many thought the very idea of cloning was experimentally impossible. By focusing instead on new laboratory techniques and practices and their place in Anglo-American science and society in the mid-twentieth century, Nathan Crowe demonstrates how embryos constructed in the lab were only later reconstructed as ethical problems in the 1960s and 1970s with the emergence of what was then referred to as the Biological Revolution. His book illuminates the importance of the early history of cloning for the biosciences and their institutional, disciplinary, and intellectual contexts, as well as providing new insights into the changing cultural perceptions of the biological sciences after Second World War.

Book Biological Specificity and Growth

Download or read book Biological Specificity and Growth written by Elmer G. Butler and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of the eleven chapters in this book approach the subject from a variety of viewpoints, ranging from an analysis of molecular changes within differentiating cells to a consideration of the factors governing the transplantation of normal and abnormal tissues. The book is based on papers presented at the Twelfth Growth Symposium of the Society for the Study of Development and Growth. Originally published in 1955. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Nuclear Transfer Protocols

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul J. Verma
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-02-02
  • ISBN : 1597451541
  • Pages : 684 pages

Download or read book Nuclear Transfer Protocols written by Paul J. Verma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-02 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Transfer Protocols: Cell Reprogramming and Transgenesis is a comprehensive review of nuclear transfer technology in vertebrates, aimed at reprogramming differentiated nuclei and effecting targeted gene transfer. The emphasis here is on providing readily reproducible techniques for the gene- tion of cloned embryos and animals in a number of key research and commercially important vertebrates. Additional chapters provide alternative cutting-edge methods for nuclear transfer, such as zona-free nuclear transfer and serial nuclear transfer. Of immense practical benefit are descriptions of procedures associated with cloning, such as in vitro maturation of oocytes, activation and culture of cloned embryos, maintenance of pregnancy, and neonatal care of clones. Nuclear Transfer Protocols: Cell Reprogramming and Transgenesis also provides an understanding of the factors involved in nuclear reprogramming, which is imperative for the success of cloning. A section dealing with such cloning-related issues as aging and normality of clones is also included making this an essential comprehensive handbook for research and commercial labo- tories involved in, or intending to work on, nuclear transfer. The volume will prove beneficial to molecular biologists, stem cell biologists, clinicians, biotechnologists, students, veterinarians, and animal care technicians involved with reprogramming, nuclear transfer, and transgenesis.

Book Growth Nutrition and Metabolism of Cells In Culture V3

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth, Nutrition, and Metabolism of Cells in Culture, Volume 3, focuses on a number of specific, timely areas of research that make use of cell and tissue culture. The major theme of this volume is growth and its regulation in animal cells. The book includes studies on the role of growth factors in cell culture systems; the effects of cyclic nucleotides in cell proliferation in culture; metabolic regulation during the cell cycle; and the role of the cell surface in growth and metabolic regulation. There are also separate chapters on aspects of abnormal cell growth and metabolism; DNA repair; genetic analysis using cell fusion techniques; the growth of vascular cells in culture for atherosclerosis research; the culture of haploid vertebrate cells for genetic analysis of cell function; data on haploid cell culture; and the value of using cell cultures to test for the possible toxicity of various pharmacologic agents.
