Book excerpt: The fast-growing field of Animal Studies is a varied and much contested domain. Engagement with animals has encouraged both collaboration and conflict between researchers within the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Animal Encounters comprises a series of meetings not only between diverse beasts, but also between distinct disciplinary methods, theoretical approaches, and ethical positions. The essays here collected come together from literary and cultural studies, sociology and anthropology, ecocriticism and art history, philosophy and feminism, science and technology studies, history and posthumanism, to study that most familiar and most foreign of creatures, a ~the animala (TM). These encounters between leading practitioners in the field highlight the promise and potential of interspecies exchange and mutual provocation.

Book excerpt: It's a "Color-With-Me" Trip to the Zoo! "Sweat dripped down Andrew's face and off of his nose onto the jungle dirt below. The air was hot and sticky. It was hard to breath in the heat as Andrew hid in the high jungle grass, quietly waiting. He knew that it was only a matter of time before the wild beast of the jungle would show itself. 'Those clothes are brand new!' said Andrew's mother. 'You're going to be covered in grass stains when the bus comes to pick you up and there wont be enough time to change.' Andrew stood up and apologized. He had been laying on his belly on the front lawn. His brand new clothes could have easily been ruined. He was playing safari because he was so excited about the field trip his school was taking to the zoo today. Andrew couldn't wait to see all the animals." Grab your crayons and join Andrew as he goes on safari at the zoo. You may even learn a few things yourself! This is a first of it's kind book series and fun for kids of any age! Book Animal Encounters

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susan Crane
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2012-11-29
  • ISBN : 0812206304
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Animal Encounters written by Susan Crane and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces of the living animal run across the entire corpus of medieval writing and reveal how pervasively animals mattered in medieval thought and practice. In fascinating scenes of cross-species encounters, a raven offers St. Cuthbert a lump of lard that waterproofs his visitors' boots for a whole year, a scholar finds inspiration for his studies in his cat's perfect focus on killing mice, and a dispossessed knight wins back his heritage only to give it up again in order to save the life of his warhorse. Readers have often taken such encounters to be merely figurative or fanciful, but Susan Crane discovers that these scenes of interaction are firmly grounded in the intimate cohabitation with animals that characterized every medieval milieu from palace to village. The animal encounters of medieval literature reveal their full meaning only when we recover the living animal's place within the written animal. The grip of a certain humanism was strong in medieval Britain, as it is today: the humanism that conceives animals in diametrical opposition to humankind. Yet medieval writing was far from univocal in this regard. Latin and vernacular works abound in other ways of thinking about animals that invite the saint, the scholar, and the knight to explore how bodies and minds interpenetrate across species lines. Crane brings these other ways of thinking to light in her readings of the beast fable, the hunting treatise, the saint's life, the bestiary, and other genres. Her substantial contribution to the field of animal studies investigates how animals and people interact in culture making, how conceiving the animal is integral to conceiving the human, and how cross-species encounters transform both their animal and their human participants.

Book Taking the Adventure

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gracia Fay Ellwood
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2014-11-11
  • ISBN : 1630877522
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book Taking the Adventure written by Gracia Fay Ellwood and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between faith, especially Christian faith, and a lifestyle that respects animals as our neighbors and kin? Why should faith entail a commitment to vegetarianism? Are animals meant to be heirs of the kingdom of God as well as human beings? Taking the Adventure offers answers to these questions in the context of important biblical themes: of Eden and Exodus, of the prophetic imperative, of Jesus as a prophet proclaiming liberty to the oppressed and the captives, of the feast of the kingdom, of the resurrection and life beyond death. It explores imagery from familiar novels such as A Christmas Carol and The Hobbit that deal with cravings, anxiety, and true abundance. It proposes that committing ourselves to live in God-given peace with all living beings, and sharing with others the good news of that peace, is an adventure worth the best we can give--an arduous and painful, yet joyous adventure climaxing in return to the heart of God.

Book Creatures of the Rock

Download or read book Creatures of the Rock written by Andrew Peacock and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A James Herriot for the 21st century recounts his adventures as a newcomer to Newfoundland. When Andrew Peacock made the move from Ontario to Newfoundland, he thought he was kicking off his career as a newly qualified vetenarian with an adventure in a temporary location. It was certainly an adventure, but there was nothing temporary about it. He practiced in Newfoundland for nearly 30 years and is still living there. In fact, he has lived there so long, the locals are starting to think of him as one of them. Creatures of the Rock chronicles a career spent working with and getting to know a rich variety of animals and their owners, on farms, in homes and zoos, and in the wild. Andrew was the only vet for miles around. A day of practice could include anything from a Caesarian section on a cow in a blizzard to freeing a humpback whale from a trap designed for cod to capturing a polar bear after its surprise visit to a bingo parlor. And, on the human side, anything from trying to impress a surpringly large audience of farmers with your first boar castration, to taking care of a family just as well as its stricken cat, to discouraging farm hands from helping themselves to hypodermic needles. All this against the background of a domestic scene in which Andrew's wife Ingrid--also freshly qualified, as a doctor--shares the adventure of making new life, and in due course of starting a family. Told in a series of brief, endlessly engaging stories, Creatures of the Rock is a funny, thrilling, unflinching but ultimately heartwarming narrative about the connections between people and animals, and people with each other.

Book Olive Mabel Me Life and Adventures with Two Very Good Dogs

Download or read book Olive Mabel Me Life and Adventures with Two Very Good Dogs written by Andrew Cotter and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Olive and Mabel, Labrador retrievers who rose to internet fame as the subjects of Andrew Cotter's BBC sports parodies. When sporting events were put on hold in March 2020, commentator Andrew Cotter shifted to working from home. The one-on-one competitors? His two Labrador retrievers, Olive and Mabel. In the hilarious videos that ensued, the dogs engage in various contests, from bone-snatching and breakfast-eating to crushing it on the dog walk, while Cotter narrates to hilarious effect. The scene of Mabel, simply standing still in a fetid pond was one of the most popular. Why? Because this is how dogs live, and Cotter captured it with humor and joy. It’s why the series has been viewed more than 50 million times, entertaining dog owners, sports fans and celebrities around the world. Olive and Mabel are more than online celebrities, however, as revealed in this charming narrative. Filled with stories about how Cotter fell in love with his dogs, his passion for hiking with them through the glens and over the peaks of his native Scotland, and the ongoing relationship between Olive and Mabel (particularly the “competitive fire” lit during these days of quarantine), the memoir is by turns side-splittingly funny and thoughtfully tender. It’s sure to resonate with all dog lovers.
