Book Traditional Forest Related Knowledge

Download or read book Traditional Forest Related Knowledge written by John A. Parrotta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a topic of vital and ongoing importance, Traditional Forest Knowledge examines the history, current status and trends in the development and application of traditional forest knowledge by local and indigenous communities worldwide. It considers the interplay between traditional beliefs and practices and formal forest science and interrogates the often uneasy relationship between these different knowledge systems. The contents also highlight efforts to conserve and promote traditional forest management practices that balance the environmental, economic and social objectives of forest management. It places these efforts in the context of recent trends towards the devolution of forest management authority in many parts of the world. The book includes regional chapters covering North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Australia-Pacific region. As well as relating the general factors mentioned above to these specific areas, these chapters cover issues of special regional significance, such as the importance of traditional knowledge and practices for food security, economic development and cultural identity. Other chapters examine topics ranging from key policy issues to the significant programs of regional and international organisations, and from research ethics and best practices for scientific study of traditional knowledge to the adaptation of traditional forest knowledge to climate change and globalisation.

Book Virginia Tax Payers 1782 1787

Download or read book Virginia Tax Payers 1782 1787 written by Augusta B. Fothergill and published by . This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Census of the United States in 1790 comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia. However, the United States Government, with the cooperation of the Virginia State Library, published the "Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790; Records of the State Enumerations 1782 to 1785: Virginia," in an attempt to partially reconstruct Virginia's 1790 Census. This book is a critical supplement to the United States Census of 1790. It consists of an alphabetical listing of approximately 34,000 taxpayers in Virginia that were not included in the 1790 Census, and whose names were compiled from personal property tax lists from 35 individual Virginia counties. Softcover, (1940), repr. 2006, Alphabetical Listing, 146 pp.

These research studies include contributions that have been made from a diverse range of researchers, resulting in a variety of topics and experiences. Urban areas face a number of challenges related to reducing pollution, improving main transportation and infrastructure systems and these challenges can contribute to the development of social and economic imbalances and require the development of new solutions. The challenge is to manage human activities, pursuing welfare and prosperity in the urban environment, whilst considering the relationships between the parts and their connections with the living world. The dynamics of its networks (flows of energy matter, people, goods, information and other resources) are fundamental for an understanding of the evolving nature of today’s cities. Large cities represent a productive ground for architects, engineers, city planners, social and political scientists able to conceive new ideas and time them according to technological advances and human requirements. Book Cotton on the South Plains

Download or read book Cotton on the South Plains written by John Taylor Becker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's cotton production on the South Plains barely resembles the cotton culture of 100 years ago. When cotton first came to the South Plains it was very labor intensive, with every stage of production depending on large amounts of hand labor. The planting, cultivating, and picking or pulling of cotton were all done by hand. Often, the harvested cotton was transported to gins in wagons pulled by teams of horses or mules. Today, due to the many improvements in the industry, most cotton is grown without ever being touched by human hands. The story of cotton on the South Plains is the story of continuous change, improvement, and mechanization.
