Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the Westphalian view of international relations, which focuses on the sovereignty of states and the inevitable potential for conflict, the authors from the Borderlands Study Group reconceive borders as capillaries enabling the flow of material, cultural, and social benefits through local communities, nation-states, and entire regions. By emphasizing local agency and regional interdependencies, this metaphor reconfigures current narratives about the China India border and opens a new perspective on the long history of the Silk Roads, the modern BCIM Initiative, and dam construction along the Nu River in China and the Teesta River in India. Together, the authors show that positive interaction among people on both sides of a border generates larger, cross-border communities, which can pressure for cooperation and development. India China offers the hope that people divided by arbitrary geo-political boundaries can circumvent race, gender, class, religion, and other social barriers, to form more inclusive institutions and forms of governance.

Book The Indian Rivers

  • ISBN : 9811029849
  • Pages : 551 pages

Download or read book The Indian Rivers written by Dhruv Sen Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-30 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents geomorphological studies of the major river basins – the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra and their tributaries. Besides major basins, the book explores peninsular rivers and other rivers state-by-state. All types of rivers, i.e. snow-fed, rain-fed and groundwater-fed rivers are explained together in geological framework. Rivers are lifeline and understanding of the rivers, their dynamics, science and socio-economic aspect is very important. However, different sources provide different data base for rivers. But a book which explains all major rivers of a country at a single place was not yet available. This book is the first book of its kind in the world which provides expert opinion on all major rivers of a country like India. This book complements works in these areas for the last two to three decades on major rivers of India by eminent professors and scientists from different universities, IITs and Indian research institutions. The information presented in the book would appeal to a wider readership from students, teachers to researchers and planners engaged in developmental work and also to common people of the society concerned with awareness about rivers.

Book The Braided River

  • Author : Samrat Choudhury
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2021-04-28
  • ISBN : 9390327598
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book The Braided River written by Samrat Choudhury and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-04-28 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brahmaputra is by some margin the largest river in India. After its confluence with the Ganga in Bangladesh, it becomes the largest in Asia. In The Braided River, journalist Samrat Choudhury sets out to follow its braided course from the edge of Tibet where it enters India down to where it meets the Ganga at a spot marked by the biggest red light district in Bangladesh. Along the way, he meets suspicious Indian spies, gets packed off on the back of a cement truck by soldiers, visit a shelter home for baby rhino and elephant orphans in Kaziranga, and hops from river island to riverside town meeting the locals. The tales of these encounters spice up a story that weaves in the history of the emergence of the border between India and China in Arunachal Pradesh, the formation of the Assamese identity -- a matter of great contemporary relevance owing to the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act -- and the ecological challenges posed by proposed dams. This is a genre-bending book that touches upon several hot-button issues -- environmental, military and political -- as it blends travel, memoir and history with the present.

Book Contested Waters

Download or read book Contested Waters written by Amit Ranjan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines India’s transboundary river water disputes with its South Asian riparian neighbours — Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. It explores the history of disputes and cooperation over the transboundary river water in this region as well as discusses current disputes and future concerns. It analyses how and why existing transboundary river water sharing treaties between India and its South Asian riparian neighbours are confronted with challenges. The book indicates that India’s transboundary river water disputes with its South Asian riparian neighbours are likely to escalate in coming years due to the widening of the demand¬–supply gap in the respective countries. It further shows the impact of bilateral relations on the resolution of transboundary river water disputes, even as cordial relationships do not always guarantee the absence of river water disputes between riparian states. The book looks at some key questions: How political are India’s transboundary rivers water disputes in South Asia? Why do the roots of India’s river water disputes with Bangladesh and Pakistan lie in the partition of the British India in 1947? Why are there reservations against India’s hydroelectricity projects or allegations of water theft? Is it possible to resolve transboundary river water disputes among these South Asian countries? This book will greatly interest scholars and researchers working in the areas of river management, environmental politics, transnationalism, water resources, politics and international relations, security studies, peace and conflict studies, geopolitics, development studies, governance and public administration, and South Asian studies in addition to policymakers and journalists.

Book Rivers and Sustainable Development

Download or read book Rivers and Sustainable Development written by S. Nazrul Islam and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a new conceptualization of river related policy issues, using concepts such as the Commercial and Cordon approaches to rivers and their opposite, the Ecological and Open approaches. It draws upon river related experience from across the world to substantiate and illustrate these concepts. This new conceptualization will help to connect the river policy related discussion of the experts and specialists with that of river activists and the public. This shared discussion will allow better river policy formulation. The book argues for replacing the currently dominant Commercial and Cordon approaches to rivers by the Ecological and Open approaches rivers. It shows how such a policy change can be more conducive to achieving sustainable development. Rivers are a vital component of the ecology. The earth's hydrological cycle depends on them. As the world population grows and the demand for freshwater increases, rivers are coming under more stress. Many rivers already get completely exhausted before reaching the seas. Climate change is destabilizing the rivers further. River related conflicts are spreading. The necessity for adoption of right river policies is more urgent than ever. Yet the current disconnection between the river related discussions by experts and specialists, on the one hand, and activists and policymakers, on the other, makes correct river policy formulation difficult. By helping to move the river policy discussion from the confines of experts to the public arena this book will allow formulation of more pro-people and pro-environment river policies. "--

Book Water Use and Poverty Reduction

Download or read book Water Use and Poverty Reduction written by Md. Fakrul Islam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-28 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of empirical research on the sharing of water of the Teesta River, which flows through India and Bangladesh. The main purpose is to show how regional cooperation between India and Bangladesh regarding sharing of Teesta River water can ensure optimal benefits for people living in the area of the Teesta Basin located in the two countries. The author takes an interdisciplinary approach focusing on the relationship between availability of water and the reduction of poverty in the Teesta Basin as a whole. The book presents findings of a comparative socioeconomic survey on the Dalia and Gazoldoba irrigable areas, with background information on the Teesta River and its origin, spatio-physical nature, geomorphic and hydrological characteristics, irrigation and water delivery system through the Gazoldoba barrage in India and the Dalia barrage in Bangladesh. Citing the principles of transboundary freshwater sharing, this work focuses on different approaches to international water sharing and introduces an optimal approach to dry season water sharing and welfare maximization by developing a bilateral water sharing model. The model is tested through computer simulation, and an alternative water allocation policy is proposed. Water Use and Poverty Reduction is highly recommended to readers who seek an optimum solution to transboundary and bilateral water sharing and poverty reduction issues.

Book excerpt: Climate change not only involves rising temperatures but it can also alter the hydro-meteorological parameters of a region and the corresponding changes emerging in the various biotic or abiotic environmental features.
