Book excerpt: Finding practical theology not always able to present frameworks for understanding concrete and lived experience with divine action, Andrew Root's Christopraxis seeks to reset the edifice of practical theology on a new foundation. While not minimizing its commitment to the lived and concrete, Root argues that practical theology has neglected deeper theological underpinnings. Root seeks to create a practical theology that is properly and fully theological, post-postmodern, post-Aristotelian, and that attends to doctrines such as divine action and justification.

Download or read book Remembering Your Creator written by Matthew Mead and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Mead sets down the sincere choosing of God which should result in closing with Christ and being genuinely converted. His text is Ecclesiastes 12:1, “Remember your Creator now in the days of your youth.” He directed the sermons to the youth of the church, but they are by no means linked only to them, and will make older sinners blush as well as younger ones. He explains that the two great duties of the Christian life are to cease to do evil, and to learn to do well. No man can be good that does not cease to be evil. In the words of the preacher from Ecclesiastes, he shows that this exhortation is to take up a very concerning duty, backed with a threefold argument. In the duty, first, the act, which is to “remember.” Secondly, the object to be remembered, “your Creator.” And, thirdly, the time when he must be remembered, “now.” Sincere converts to the Christian faith should wisely improve this present life, and carefully provide for a better one to come. The one that is truly faithful in one will in some measure be conscious in both, and both are pointed at in Mead’s text. The one that in the days of his youth remembers his Creator as he ought, rightly improves the present life and wisely provides for that which is to come. In doing so, he unites in his practice those duties that God has joined together in the precept, “remember your Creator now in the days of your youth.” This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Download or read book Christ at the Crux written by Paul Cumin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Christian theology confess God as both other than the world and also related to it in a way that compromises neither of these? Most modern thought has offered a simple reply: it cannot. Christ at the Crux analyzes one element of the roots of this denial and charts a route toward rapprochement. The Christologies of eight theologians offer various attempts to relate the Creator and the creature in Christ: Irenaeus of Lyon, Cyril of Alexandria, John Philoponus, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Zizioulas, Robert Jenson, and Colin Gunton. Within the patristic era the question is grounded in theology about the incarnation; with the Reformers the focus is on the mediation between creation and Creator; and with the three modern theologians the breadth of the issue is completed with theology proper. Together, these eight offer a grand-scale perspective on much of the christological possibilities for conceiving the relation between God and everything else. In the end Paul Cumin shows how the doctrine of the Trinity appears to open new possibilities for Christology and in particular for the way theology about the Spirit enables a reimagining of those items of Christian thought most likely at the roots of our modern rejection of God-as-other.

Book The Traditional Teaching of the Ethiopian Orthodox T wahedo Church

Download or read book The Traditional Teaching of the Ethiopian Orthodox T wahedo Church written by Christine Chaillot and published by LIT Verlag. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine Chaillot’s new book, The Traditional Teaching of the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwahedo Church: Faith and Spirituality, presents a topic that is little – if at all – known outside Ethiopia, even in Christian circles. Moreover, it is a much neglected field in the wider study of African education. It is a teaching based on ancient texts and books, taught orally to the students who will become the future clergy and who will then share their knowledge with the faithful in Church life. The studies of the different disciplines are pursued at different schools and at different levels, in liturgy, theology with commentaries of books (Old and New Testaments, books of the Church fathers and monks) as well as composition of poems (qenes) and iconography. All this teaching presented in the present volume is deeply related to the faith and spirituality of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. This teaching is a unique intangible cultural heritage. One wonders, however, what its future will be in the context of the modern educational methods and social attitudes that have evolved in Ethiopia over the last half-century.

Book Why Was Man Created

Download or read book Why Was Man Created written by Sam Oputa and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the beginning, God created the earth, and He looked upon it in His cosmic loneliness. And God said, "Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what We have done." And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man. Mud as man alone could speak. God leaned close to mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked. "What is the purpose of all this?" he asked politely. "Everything must have a purpose?" asked God. "Certainly," said man. "Then I leave it to you to think of one for all this," said God. And He went away." -Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle Most people must have at one point or another asked themselves the question, why am I here? One thing is certain--we were not here from the beginning. Some have asked questions like "What is life all about?" Many others have wondered "What is the nature of life?" and "What is the nature of reality?". These questions can be a passing thought that launches into a full-on existential exploration. What are we anyway? We are born. We grow into adults and before you can bat an eyelid, you are in the old people's home waiting to die. How fulfilling is that? Do you now wonder why some people ask the question "What are we here for anyway?" Some great people have asked these questions. "What is my purpose?" It is a difficult and profound question, and a common conclusion is that we were created for God's glory. That may be a religious truth but is it logical? There must be a far more specific reason for our creation. In Sam Oputa's Why Was Man Created? he explores this question from many angles--spirituality, religion, psychology, philosophy, and other sciences--but mostly he draws from the Holy Books, which contain a wealth of scientific evidence. The result of years of research and soul-searching Why Was Man Created? is a fascinating and sometimes controversial study of the age-old question of creation and evolution. The answers to these questions are not easy to resolve but the answers are out there.

Book The Founding Myth

  • Author : Andrew L Seidel
  • Publisher : Union Square & Co.

Download or read book The Founding Myth written by Andrew L Seidel and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do “In God We Trust,” the Declaration of Independence, and other historical “evidence” prove that America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles? Are the Ten Commandments the basis for American law? A constitutional attorney dives into the debate about religion’s role in America’s founding. In today’s contentious political climate, understanding religion’s role in American government is more important than ever. Christian nationalists assert that our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and advocate an agenda based on this popular historical claim. But is this belief true? The Founding Myth answers the question once and for all. Andrew L. Seidel, a constitutional attorney at the Freedom from Religion Foundation, builds his case point by point, comparing the Ten Commandments to the Constitution and contrasting biblical doctrine with America’s founding philosophy, showing that the Bible contradicts the Declaration of Independence’s central tenets. Thoroughly researched, this persuasively argued and fascinating book proves that America was not built on the Bible and that Christian nationalism is, in fact, un-American.

Download or read book All Things Spiritual written by Phillip Eldridge Williams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short quip referred to in conversation and seen often in descriptive writing as well as various and sundry speeches is in reality on shaky ground when taken apart. The truth has been the object of the search of man since he became serious with his ontology from earliest recorded history and finds its way in most academic institutions with each Latin phrase in its logo. Matter has always been taken for granted but until recently (1939) with the declaration of the Physicists community in Copenhagen, Denmark has acknowledged that indeed there is no final field theory for locating reality. In this book I will attempt to speak to this lack of reality by delving into the state of being, or lack thereof, I will refer to as spirituality and the Native American priority given to the Great Spirit and the answer they give to one's ontology (why one is here) known as their vision quest. We will investigate spirituality as that encounter we all must deal with in our religious medium for finding some sense of meaning and its answer to our need for respect. I'll look at the Judeo/Christian offering of the image of God and the spooky-goings-on-at-a-distance stipulated by Albert Einstein as well as the implications of Galileo's insightful declaration in the 17th century that all meaning begins with experience (spirituality) and ends with experience, that spirituality is all that there is and to offer proposals based upon purely logic alone is meaningless as regards reality. Spirituality in the best sense of the word is your taking serious your honor as well as that of others. This could be seen as the First and Greatest Commandment and the Second like unto it Thy neighbor as thyself. This work is the culmination of 15 years of writing and a lifetime of seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness having all these things being added unto me. (Matthew 6:33) Now to have all these things added unto you is to be quickened with eyes to see and ears to hear things/matter as they are and not from the might-makes-right syndrome or the what’s-in-it-for-me modus operandi. This quickening power is the mighty-hand-of-God as opposed to the hand-of-God revealing the nature of truth, God's righteousness as being no respecter of persons, time, place or thing and doing so unconditionally. This is indeed the Final Field or the Truth of the Matter.
