Book 1770 1790 Census of the Cumberland Settlements

Download or read book 1770 1790 Census of the Cumberland Settlements written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1987 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest surviving federal enumerations of the Tennessee Country consist of the 1810 census of Rutherford County and an incomplete 1820 census. But since the first settlers arrived at the French Lick as early as 1779, the first forty years of settlement in the area we now call Tennessee are a blank, at least in the official enumerations. This work is an attempt to reconstruct a census of the Cumberland River settlements in Davidson, Sumner, and Tennessee counties, which today comprise all or part of forty Tennessee counties. To this end, Mr. Fulcher has abstracted from the public records all references to those living in the jurisdictions between 1770 and 1790. From wills, deeds, court minutes, marriage records, military records, and many related items, the author has put together a carefully documented list of inhabitants--virtually the "first" census of Tennessee.

Book Ploughshares Into Swords

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Sidbury
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1997-10-13
  • ISBN : 9780521598606
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Ploughshares Into Swords written by James Sidbury and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summer of 1800, slaves in and around Richmond conspired to overthrow their masters and abolish slavery. This book uses Gabriel's Conspiracy, and the evidence produced during the repression of the revolt, to expose the processes through which Virginians of African descent built an oppositional culture. Sidbury portrays the rich cultures of eighteenth-century black Virginians, and the multiple, and sometimes conflicting, senses of identity that emerged among enslaved and free people living in and around the rapidly growing state capital. The book also examines the conspirators' vision of themselves as God's chosen people, and the complicated African and European roots of their culture. In so doing, it offers an alternative interpretation of the meaning of the Virginia that was home to so many of the Founding Fathers. This narrative focuses on the history and perspectives of black and enslaved people, in order to develop 'Gabriel's Virginia' as a counterpoint to more common discussions of 'Jeffersonian Virginia'.
