Download or read book The Apostles Creed written by Ben Myers and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Christian faith is mysterious not because it is so complicated but because it is so simple. A person does not start with baptism and then advance to higher mysteries. In baptism each believer already possesses the faith in its fullness. ... In the same way, it takes considerable effort to begin to comprehend all that we have received in Christ. Theological thinking does not add a single thing to what we have received. The inheritance remains the same whether we grasp its magnitude or not. But the better we grasp it, the happier we are. So this small book is an invitation to happiness. I have written it with a glad heart, and I hope it will be helpful for others who want to comprehend the mystery of faith in all its 'breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love Christ that surpasses knowledge' (Eph 3:18-19)."--Preface, pages xv-xvi
Download or read book In Truth written by Matthew Fraser and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ancient Rome to the current Internet age, this sweeping history of ideas explores how different epochs wrestled with the issue of truth and lies. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to the modern era, how have people determined what is true? How have those with power and influence sought to control the narrative? Are we living in a post-truth era, or is that notion simply the latest attempt to control the narrative? The relationship between truth and power is the key theme. Moving through major historical periods, the author focuses on notable people and events, from well-known leaders like Julius Caesar and Adolf Hitler to lesser-known individuals like Procopius and Savonarola. He notes distinct parallels in history to current events. Julius Caesar's publication of his Gallic Wars and Civil Wars was an early exercise in political spin not unlike what we see today. During the English Civil War and the Enlightenment, pamphleteering coupled with the new power of the printing press challenged the status quo, as online and social media does in our time. And "fake news" was already being used by German chancellor Otto von Bismarck in nineteenth-century Europe and by the "yellow journalism" of American newspaper magnates William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer near the turn of the twentieth century. The author concludes optimistically, noting that we are debating and discussing truth more fiercely today than in any previous era. The determination to arrive at the truth, despite the manipulations of the powerful, bodes well for the future of democracy.
Download or read book Truth and History in the Ancient World written by Lisa Hau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays investigates histories in the ancient world and the extent to which the producers and consumers of those histories believed them to be true. Ancient Greek historiographers repeatedly stressed the importance of truth to history; yet they also purported to believe in myth, distorted facts for nationalistic or moralizing purposes, and omitted events that modern audiences might consider crucial to a truthful account of the past. Truth and History in the Ancient World explores a pluralistic concept of truth – one in which different versions of the same historical event can all be true – or different kinds of truths and modes of belief are contingent on culture. Beginning with comparisons between historiography and aspects of belief in Greek tragedy, chapters include discussions of historiography through the works of Herodotus, Xenophon, and Ktesias, as well as Hellenistic and later historiography, material culture in Vitruvius, and Lucian’s satire. Rather than investigate whether historiography incorporates elements of poetic, rhetorical, or narrative techniques to shape historical accounts, or whether cultural memory is flexible or manipulated, this volume examines pluralities of truth and belief within the ancient world – and consequences for our understanding of culture, ancient or otherwise.

Book excerpt: Move into the Present Room and Enjoy Your Life “The Three Rooms is a heartfelt seminal text which addresses self-understanding in spatial and temporal terms, simple enough for a child to understand, yet deep enough to awaken a true spiritual seeker.” —Dr. Michael R. Cunningham, Chancellor, National University System Most of us are sleepwalking, focusing on the physical world when we should be paying attention to our inner selves, and to being in the present. The Three Rooms will help readers awaken and align with their Higher Self. The book uses the metaphor of rooms to represent places our thoughts go: backwards to the Past Room, forward to the Future Room, or now in the Present Room. In the Present Room, there are no regrets of the past or fears of the future; it is the ideal state “where we can find joy, peace, acceptance, and compassion,” among other positive emotions. That is where we are meant to be.

Download or read book On Christ s Mission written by Riaan Engelbrecht and published by Riaan Engelbrecht. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jesus departed to be with His eternal Father, He gave the church (the ecclesia) a clear mission statement in Matthew 28, which speaks of the Great Commission. And what is the Great Commission, therefore, the mission? Go and make disciples so that the world may be told of Jesus and, therefore, be saved. Some will say some translations never speak of making disciples, but rather to teach all nations, “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”. But is the purpose of teaching the nations of Christ not to make disciples? If one teaches someone about Jesus, you are surely equipping them to be a follower of Jesus. And such a follower is a disciple. We are called in God's wisdom and by His Spirit to teach all people about Jesus, for the purpose of making disciples. It doesn’t happen automatically. It will take a concerted and decisive effort of the Bride of God. Time is, however, slipping away to get our house in order with God, and now is the time to do so. We are living in the last days, and the day of the Lord’s coming is at hand. Billions of people are still lost in every city, town, and village across the world. There is no more time to be playing church or to be consumed with our agendas. We need to come into alignment with God, seek Him, and be awake from our slumber. The church has been slumbering for a long time, lulled into sleep by a false sense of security, peace and a sense of accomplishment. Yet there is a mission to complete, which is the Great Commission. It is God’s mission of bringing in the harvest of the lost and broken. Now is the time to get busy with God’s business, and His business is about salvation, redemption and restoration. The call to the church to actively engage in this mission, therefore, to make the main thing the main thing, is covered in volumes one and two.

Download or read book Enthronement written by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even the most casual contact with the culture, politics, or religion of Tibet and the surrounding region brings outsiders face to face with the institution of reincarnate spiritual masters. Past masters are identified as small children installed in their predecessor's monastery in a ceremony called "enthronement" and educated to continue the work of their former incarnation. This custom has provided a principal source of spiritual renewal for Himalayan Buddhists for the past thousand years. The introduction places the subject of reincarnate meditation masters within two major contexts: the activity of bodhisattvas, and in modern Tibetan society, where the reappearance of past masters is both natural and profoundly moving. Tai Situpa Rinpoche, a contemporary reincarnate master and a leader of the Kagyu lineage, describes the process of finding other reincarnate masters. Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye, an outstanding writer and meditation master, offers a traditional view of the enthronement of reincarnate masters.
