Book The Philistines and Other Sea Peoples in Text and Archaeology

Download or read book The Philistines and Other Sea Peoples in Text and Archaeology written by Ann E. Killebrew and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2013-04-21 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for the biblical Philistines, one of ancient Israel’s most storied enemies, has long intrigued both scholars and the public. Archaeological and textual evidence examined in its broader eastern Mediterranean context reveals that the Philistines, well-known from biblical and extrabiblical texts, together with other related groups of “Sea Peoples,” played a transformative role in the development of new ethnic groups and polities that emerged from the ruins of the Late Bronze Age empires. The essays in this book, representing recent research in the fields of archaeology, Bible, and history, reassess the origins, identity, material culture, and impact of the Philistines and other Sea Peoples on the Iron Age cultures and peoples of the eastern Mediterranean. The contributors are Matthew J. Adams, Michal Artzy, Tristan J. Barako, David Ben-Shlomo, Mario Benzi, Margaret E. Cohen, Anat Cohen-Weinberger, Trude Dothan, Elizabeth French, Marie-Henriette Gates, Hermann Genz, Ayelet Gilboa, Maria Iacovou, Ann E. Killebrew, Sabine Laemmel, Gunnar Lehmann, Aren M. Book Lectures on the Religion of the Semites

Download or read book Lectures on the Religion of the Semites written by William Robertson Smith and published by . This book was released on 1894 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this in-depth enquiry, the religion and spiritual traditions of peoples inhabiting the ancient Middle East is investigated by Professor W. R. Smith of Cambridge University. This investigation concerns the Semitic peoples as a whole, who inhabited several ancient countries in the Middle East. The peoples included in Smith's work include Arabs, Hebrews, Phoenicians, Aramaeans, Babylonians and Assyrians. Since these civilizations neighbored one another, traded, warred, and otherwise interacted, their spiritual beliefs and religions underwent a shared evolution with time. The author tackles the characteristics of ancient faith, establishing a series of commonalities between the ancient Semitic peoples. Subjects include such rituals as animal sacrifice, and the according of certain sites - typically caves and bodies of water - with a degree of holiness. Religious symbology, mystical creatures such as the demon, plus a variety of moral precepts and taboos, are also discussed at length. The earliest belief systems in the region were polytheistic, consisting of many Gods, who collectively interacted with humankind and aspects of the physical world. It was only later that monotheistic religions - a belief in one God - became prevalent and then dominant in the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This splendid work of scholarship . . . sums up with economy and power all that the written record so far deciphered has to tell about the ancient and complementary civilizations of Babylon and Assyria."—Edward B. Garside, New York Times Book Review Ancient Mesopotamia—the area now called Iraq—has received less attention than ancient Egypt and other long-extinct and more spectacular civilizations. But numerous small clay tablets buried in the desert soil for thousands of years make it possible for us to know more about the people of ancient Mesopotamia than any other land in the early Near East. Professor Oppenheim, who studied these tablets for more than thirty years, used his intimate knowledge of long-dead languages to put together a distinctively personal picture of the Mesopotamians of some three thousand years ago. Following Oppenheim's death, Erica Reiner used the author's outline to complete the revisions he had begun. "To any serious student of Mesopotamian civilization, this is one of the most valuable books ever written."—Leonard Cottrell, Book Week "Leo Oppenheim has made a bold, brave, pioneering attempt to present a synthesis of the vast mass of philological and archaeological data that have accumulated over the past hundred years in the field of Assyriological research."—Samuel Noah Kramer, Archaeology A. Leo Oppenheim, one of the most distinguished Assyriologists of our time, was editor in charge of the Assyrian Dictionary of the Oriental Institute and John A. Wilson Professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Chicago.

Book Civilizations of Ancient Iraq

Download or read book Civilizations of Ancient Iraq written by Benjamin R. Foster and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Civilizations of Ancient Iraq, Benjamin and Karen Foster tell the fascinating story of ancient Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements ten thousand years ago to the Arab conquest in the seventh century. Accessible and concise, this is the most up-to-date and authoritative book on the subject. With illustrations of important works of art and architecture in every chapter, the narrative traces the rise and fall of successive civilizations and peoples in Iraq over the course of millennia--from the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians to the Persians, Seleucids, Parthians, and Sassanians. Ancient Iraq was home to remarkable achievements. One of the birthplaces of civilization, it saw the world's earliest cities and empires, writing and literature, science and mathematics, monumental art, and innumerable other innovations. Civilizations of Ancient Iraq gives special attention to these milestones, as well as to political, social, and economic history. And because archaeology is the source of almost everything we know about ancient Iraq, the book includes an epilogue on the discovery and fate of its antiquities. Compelling and timely, Civilizations of Ancient Iraq is an essential guide to understanding Mesopotamia's central role in the development of human culture.
