Book excerpt: German Memories in Asia is a collection of memories by the author Rajkumar Kanagasingam, in his association with the German university students, who have been volunteering in Asia under an internship program. German Memories in Asia narrates the fascinating early human migration from Africa to the rest of the world and the sensitive issues of Asian and European historical events, especially the German, since the Roman Empire era and about the Germans in Latin America, North America, East European countries and elsewhere in the world and their migrations, life styles, encounters and assimilations since ancient times. It analyses the First and Second World War issues of Dresden Bombing, German POW crisis and more. It explores the author's encounters in his early days in the war-ravaged Jaffna Peninsula in the northern part of the Indian Ocean 's war-torn island and then as an officer in an American NGO in the jungles under the control of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and then in a tsunami relief mission there with German students. The book is a memorable testimony for German students' life and fashion in Asia at their residency at the Aquarius Resorts in Marawila, a sleepy western coastal town of Sri Lanka facing the scenic Indian Ocean! Book Pre Historic Lanka to End of Terrorism

Download or read book Pre Historic Lanka to End of Terrorism written by Sripali Vaiamon and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invaluable material culled during the past fifty- to sixty-years-plus unexplored research data and what acknowledged literati in the world expressed on obscure areas have gone into this publication. Any citizen in a civilized society should be familiar with the historical information, current and ancient, in one's own country and that of others. Here the author has emphasized more on Sri Lanka, where there was an abominable civil war for twenty-six years, massacring over 70,000 innocent civilians and devastating a good part of the country. Author has well exploited how and why such a holocaust originated and dragged on for such a long period, where the lawfully constituted government had to fight to safeguard the citizens of the country to a possible extent, within the international parameters of war with the most ruthless terrorist outfit of the world—LTTE. This compendium undoubtedly will provide meticulous information, wholesome inspiration, and great satisfaction to an avid reader.

Book Sri Lanka

  • Author : Jonathan Spencer
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2002-09-11
  • ISBN : 1134949790
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Sri Lanka written by Jonathan Spencer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, Sri Lanka has been engulfed by political tragedy as successive governments have failed to settle the grievances of the Tamil minority in a way acceptable to the majority Sinhala population. The new Premadasa presidency faces huge economic and political problems with large sections of the island under the control of the Indian Peace-Keeping Force (IPKF) and militant separatist Tamil groups operating in the north and south. This book is not a conventional political history of Sri Lanka. Instead, it attempts to shed fresh light on the historical roots of the ethnic crisis and uses a combination of historical and anthropologial evidence to challenge the widely-held belief that the conflict in Sri Lanka is simply the continuation of centuries of animosity between the Sinhalese and the Tamils. The authors show how modern ethnic identities have been made and re-made since the colonial period with the war between Tamils and the Sinhala-dominant government accompanied by rhetorical wars over archeological sites and place-name etymologies, and the political use of the national past. The book is also one of the first attempts to focus on local perceptions of the crisis and draws on a broad range of sources, from village fieldwork to newspaper controversies. Its interest extends beyond contemporary politics to history, anthropology and development studies.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Tamils

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Tamils written by Vijaya Ramaswamy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-08-25 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tamils have an unbroken history of more than two thousand years. Tamil, the language they speak, is one of the oldest living languages in the world. The only people comparable to the Tamils in terms of their hoary past and vibrant present would be the Jews with one marked difference. The Tamils have always had their homeland 'Tamilaham' (alternately pronounced and spelt 'Tamizhaham') known today as Tamil Nadu which to them represents their mother and is revered by them as 'Tamizh Tai' literally ‘Tamil Mother’. This is in striking contrast to the Jews who have been through a long and arduous struggle to gain their homeland, a deeply contested site to this day with Hebrewisation of Israel being a key marker of Jewish identity in the region. Tamils, by contrast have a clear numerical majority in the region that now comprises Tamil Nadu and the language unites rather than divides adherents of different faiths. The second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Tamils contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Tamils.

Book Searching for Ashoka

Download or read book Searching for Ashoka written by Nayanjot Lahiri and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blending travelogue, history, and archaeology, Searching for Ashoka unravels the various avatars of India's most famous emperor, revealing how he came to be remembered—and forgotten—in distinctive ways at particular points in time and in specific locations. Through personal journeys that take her across India and to various sites and cities in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand, archaeologist Nayanjot Lahiri explores how Ashoka's visibility from antiquity to the modern era has been accompanied by a reinvention of his persona. Although the historical Ashoka spoke expansively of his ideas of governance and a new kind of morality, his afterlife is a jumble of stories and representations within various Buddhist imaginings. By remembering Ashoka selectively, Lahiri argues, ancient kings and chroniclers created an artifice, constantly appropriating and then remolding history to suit their own social visions, political agendas, and moral purposes.
