Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History Colleges and High Schools, Vol. 2 Professor Allen had a strong admiration for Theodor Mommsen as the master Of Roman history. TO him, more than to any other authority, would he have acknowledged his indebtedness. He seldom differed with Mommsen, and then only after most care ful consideration; but he was an earnest student Of the original sources, and he did not hesitate to use his own judgment and to avail himself of the researches Of all the best authorities. This acknowledgment, the only one possible under the circumstances, is gratefully made in Professor Allen's name. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History, Vol. 2: For Colleges and High Schools, a History of Rome Two years ago I gave to the school public a revised edition of that part of my Outlines of Ancient History, first published in 1882, which covered the Eastern nations and Greece. At the request of my publishers, I have since revised the remaining portion of the book, that relating to Rome, and now give it out as a companion work to the earlier volume. From the preface of the original work, I repeat my grateful acknowledgment of indebtedness to the following writers and works: Arnold's, Mommsen's, Niebuhr's, Merivale's, Liddell's, Gibbon's, and Leighton's histories of Rome; Long's Decline and Fall of the Roman Republic; Smith's Rome and Carthage; Fronde's Cæsar; Guhl and Koner's Life of the Greeks and Romans; Hadley's Introduction to Roman Law; and Dunlop's and Cruttwell's works on Roman Literature. References to other authorities that I have used in the revision of the work will be found in place, in foot-notes. For the correction, or the further elucidation, of several matters relating to Roman antiquities, I am especially indebted to Lanciani's admirable work, Ancient Rome in the Light of Recent Discoveries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Ten, Yale College, Vol. 2 Beware of the historian who would persuade you that his book is up to date. Trust him no further than you trust the timetable that pretends to be revised and corrected up to day before yesterday. History, as the world has learned to its bewilderment since August, 1914, is subject to change without notice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University Record, Vol. 2 Half-truths are dangerous because the element of truth which they contain carries conviction and easily leads to its application far beyond the real significance to which it is entitled. We are at present in grave danger of just such a misconception of one of the most prevalent state ments with regard to military preparation. The sentiment of this country is undoubtedly opposed to militarism. Our ideals and purposes are peaceful. No imperialistic propaganda could hope to succeed if its character and purposes were understood. The agitation for increasing our military forces is as a whole genuinely peaceful in its purpose. Certainly it makes its great appeal upon the ground that preparation for war is essential for the preservation of peace. The proverbs of the ancients and the utterances of our early Presidents are the mottoes it repeats: Si vis pacem para bellum, If you wish peace prepare for war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University Chronicle and Official Record, 1899, Vol. 2 It is with great pleasure that I come hither to bring from the University of California a greeting to her little sister, a sister not yet fully grown, but giving sure promise of great comeliness and great usefulness in the coming years. We of the University of California have reason to think highly of Pomona College. By their fruits ye shall know them. We have had at the University many students who have received a part or the whole of their undergraduate training at Pomona College. No class of students that we have shows better training, more well guided intelligence, greater moral earnestness than this. We have been in a position to apply to this institution the only test which ought to be applied in judging of the value of an educational establishment, and Pomona has not been found wanting. I can therefore bring to you heartiest greeting and encouragement as to those who are doing good work, and who will succeed because they deserve to. Book The History of the Ancient World From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome

Download or read book The History of the Ancient World From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome written by Susan Wise Bauer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2007-03-17 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own. This is the first volume in a bold series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. Dozens of maps provide a clear geography of great events, while timelines give the reader an ongoing sense of the passage of years and cultural interconnection. This old-fashioned narrative history employs the methods of “history from beneath”—literature, epic traditions, private letters and accounts—to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is an engrossing tapestry of human behavior from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Chronicle, Vol. 4 By Greece is meant the Greek people. This undoubtedly reached an exceedingly high stage of civilization which it did not maintain. Much new light has recently been thrown on its rise. The Homeric poems are not now unin telligible phenomena standing as enigmas in the gray dawn of Greek history. Long vistas have been opened to view reaching far back of the times in which these poets lived, and the historian of Greece no longer begins with a eriti ciam of the Homeric and Hesiodic myths, but rather makes that the opening chapter of his second book. The first book deals with the Mycenaean age, its rise and fall. It is not with the decline of this, the earliest Greek civilization, that I have to deal here. That was not final. A new era of advance followed, reached its climax, and in turn declined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clemson College Chronicle, Vol. 3: October, 1899 I have written the last two paragraphs with some hesi taney, there is so much to be said and so little that can be indicated in an essay, and besides, so much depends on the teacher. I have just touched a few subjects and omitted others, the main object being to give a simple outline of a school that should teach practical, useful knowledge. The languages and other proper subjects should be taken up at the discretion of the teacher. Geography might be taught best by comparison and history by parallel reading, but we cannot enter into further details It may not be possible or advisable to establish one or more such schools as we have discussed, but, whether or not, a similar course could be pursued as far as possible by all elementary schools, whether city or rural, and great benefit would be derived. Such school training would prepare boys and girls to enter higher schools, or would better fit them to begin the battles of life by directing them into the work for which they would be most suited. Book The Culture of Classicism

Download or read book The Culture of Classicism written by Caroline Winterer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2004-04-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the New Scholars Book Award from the American Educational Research Association Debates continue to rage over whether American university students should be required to master a common core of knowledge. In The Culture of Classicism: Ancient Greece and Rome in American Intellectual Life, 1780–1910, Caroline Winterer traces the emergence of the classical model that became standard in the American curriculum in the nineteenth century and now lies at the core of contemporary controversies. By closely examining university curricula and the writings of classical scholars, Winterer demonstrates how classics was transformed from a narrow, language-based subject to a broader study of civilization, persuasively arguing that we cannot understand both the rise of the American university and modern notions of selfhood and knowledge without an appreciation for the role of classicism in their creation.
