Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive look at the development of Ancient Greek philosophy back in antiquity. From the intro: "IT was not till the traditional view of the world and the customary rules of life had broken down, that the Greeks began to feel the needs which philosophies of nature and of conduct seek to satisfy. Nor were those needs felt all at once. The ancestral maxims of conduct were not seriously questioned till the old view of nature had passed away; and, for this reason, the earliest philosophers busied themselves mainly with speculations about the world around them. In due season, Logic was called into being to meet a fresh want. The pursuit of cosmological inquiry had brought to light a wide divergence between science and common sense, which was itself a problem that demanded solution, and moreover constrained philosophers to study the means of defending their paradoxes against the prejudices of the unscientific. Later still, the prevailing interest in logical matters raised the question of the origin and validity of knowledge; while, about the same time, the break-down of traditional morality gave rise to Ethics. The period which precedes the rise of Logic and Ethics has thus a distinctive character of its own, and may fitly be treated apart."

Book Early Greek Philosophies of Nature

Download or read book Early Greek Philosophies of Nature written by Andrew Gregory and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the philosophies of nature of the early Greek thinkers and argues that a significant and thoroughgoing shift is required in our understanding of them. In contrast with the natural world of the earliest Greek literature, often the result of arbitrary divine causation, in the work of early Ionian philosophers we see the idea of a cosmos: ordered worlds where there is complete regularity. How was this order generated and maintained and what underpinned those regularities? What analogies or models were used for the order of the cosmos? What did they think about causation and explanatory structure? How did they frame natural laws? Andrew Gregory draws on recent work on mechanistic philosophy and its history, on the historiography of the relation of science to art, religion and magic, and on the fragments and doxography of the early Greek thinkers to argue that there has been a tendency to overestimate the extent to which these early Greek philosophies of nature can be described as 'mechanistic'. We have underestimated how far they were committed to other modes of explanation and ontologies, and we have underestimated, underappreciated and indeed underexplored how plausible and good these philosophies would have been in context.

Book The Origins of Aesthetic Thought in Ancient Greece

Download or read book The Origins of Aesthetic Thought in Ancient Greece written by James I. Porter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first modern attempt to put aesthetics back on the map in classical studies. James Porter traces the origins of aesthetic thought and inquiry in their broadest manifestations as they evolved from before Homer down to the fourth-century and then into later antiquity, with an emphasis on Greece in its earlier phases. Greek aesthetics, he argues, originated in an attention to the senses and to matter as opposed to the formalism and idealism that were enshrined by Plato and Aristotle and through whose lens most subsequent views of ancient art and aesthetics have typically been filtered. Treating aesthetics in this way can help us reveal the commonly shared basis of the diverse arts of antiquity. Reorienting our view of the ancient vocabularies of art and experience around matter and sensation, this book dramatically changes how we look upon the ancient achievements in these same areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetics Aristotle The work "Poetics" was created by the ancient Greek scientist-encyclopaedist, the founder of classical logic, Aristotle (384-322 BC). Literary study of the author is one of the first works in history, which summarizes the aesthetic knowledge of the ancient world. Aristotle discovered a number of theoretical and literary categories, explaining the division of literature into three types: epic, drama and lyrics. Aristotle's scientific and artistic heritage includes the following works: a collection of works on the logic of the Organon, Metaphysics, Physics, Politics, Ethics, Poetics, On the Soul, and Athenian Politics. Aristotle - the greatest of the philosophers of the ancient world, whose authority was unshakable in the era of the Middle Ages, when the church rejected the entire heritage of ancient Greece as pagan. In his philosophical conception, there were already many elements of materialism. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book Early Greek Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Greek Philosophy Classic Reprint written by John Burnet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Greek Philosophy The marvel is that they were able to do this so thoroughly as they did. A savage myth might be pre served here and there to the scandal of philosophers; fetishes, totems, and magic rites might lurk in holes and corners with the moles and with the bats, to be unearthed long afterwards by the curious in such matters. But the all-pervading superstition, which we call primitive because we know not how or whence it came, was gone for ever and we find Herodotos noting with unfeigned surprise the existence among barbarians of beliefs and customs which, not so long ago, his own forefathers had taught and practised quite as zealously as ever did Libyan or Scyth. Even then, he might have found most of them surviving on the high places of Hellas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
