It is written to meet the needs of classes which can devote only a brief amount of time to the study of Ancient History before taking up the study of Medieval and Modern History. The "Committee of Five" of the American Historical Association recommends "that if it seems wise to omit any detailed study of ancient history and to give three years substantially to the other three blocks, the teacher, while omitting all detail, may still attempt to give his pupils some idea of the growth of the ancient nations, and some idea of their achievements and their qualities." With this aim in view, only such details of the political history of antiquity have been here included as are necessary for an understanding of ancient civilization. Furthermore, only such elements of the life of the people of antiquity have been emphasized as arc necessary for a thorough comprehension of the history of Western Europe in modern times. The book is written especially for the use of pupils in the first or second year of the high school course. The point of view of boys and girls fifteen or sixteen years old has therefore been kept in mind in the selection of details and in the wording and arrangement of the text; and also in the choice of maps and illustrations. The maps arc adequate for making clear the geographical references in the text. Several large pictures have been made to illustrate the text - an object seldom attained by the illustrations in ancient histories. These pictures are carefully designed to arouse the imagination of the readers, and to assist them in realizing the conditions of life in ancient times. Acknowledgment is due to Mr. Morris C. Deshel, teacher of history in the DeWitt Clinton High School, for his assistance in getting together the material for this textbook, and for the preparation of the references given under the Search Topics. With the success and widespread use of his work in France, particularly in schools, it was thought that this would be a good resource for students in other countries, especially in the U.S. Thus, this English translation, aptly named "History of Ancient Civilization," came to be published in 1906. This 391-page, 27-chapter volume begins its exposition with prehistoric times and concisely discussed the four ages and ends with the later empire and the organization of the Church. The author managed to distill the important aspects of various periods in history, which adds to the academic appeal of this edition. Grade school and secondary level students will find this an easy read as the writing style is straightforward, using uncomplicated sentence structures and words. It also helps that the information the book contains is divided in short paragraphs with headings in bold letters. As such, it's easy for readers to search for certain passages. This shows that this is a work designed to be used as a reference material. Many of the titles published at the turn of the century did not make much use of the divisions that Professor Seignobos employed. Aside from students, those who are interested in history or want to revisit the origins of modern civilization as a recreational activity will enjoy reading "History of Ancient Civilization." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Contemporary Civilization: A Syllabus The Faculty of Columbia College determined at its meeting in January, 1919, to discontinue the required courses in History and Philosophy and, beginning in September, 1919, to substitute a course on Contemporary Civilization which should meet five times a week and be required of all Freshmen. The purpose of the entire course is to raise for consideration the insistent problems of the present. To give the student, early in his college course, objective material on which to base his own farther studies and his own judgments will, it is believed, aid him greatly in enabling him to understand the civilization of his own day, and to participate effectively in it. The early part of the course is a preparation for the consideration of the problems of the present. Nature in its physical features and resources and man with his equipment of more or less modifiable traits are presented as materials to be used in rebuilding the present into a more desirable future. The intellectual tools, or concepts, which have played an important part in attempted solutions are also treated in their context: the application of exact science to the control of nature, the idea of mass production for world distribution, and the belief in the participation of the governed in their own control. The more immediate setting of the problems is next developed through the study (i) of the historic background of contemporary civilization, and (2) of the recent historical development of the great national states. Then, in turn, and in considerable detail, there are presented the chief problems arising in attempts to find satisfactory solutions of the difficulties incident to the major relationships which men sustain. The problems of imperialism and the backward peoples, of nationalism and internationalism, of our contemporary industrial life, of conservation, of political control, and of education are treated, with an attempt in every case to state the alternatives at issue, and to relate them to the materials through the use of which change must come, to the dominant concepts of our day, and to their own historical setting. A great deal less is being given, except by classical students, to the history of Greece and Rome. This book aims to meet the need of schools that desire a short ancient history text, to the time of Charlemagne, which shall not be chiefly a narrative of events. It deals primarily with human progress. It devotes especial attention to great movements, to important leaders, to the life of the people and to the civilization of different periods. Although it is not always easy to trace the records of the "dim silent masses," this social history seems to be worth more than the annals of courts or of conquerors. As far as possible, the author has tried to keep in mind three things: (1) the importance of any change as a part of the development of ancient civilization; (2) the connection between these changes and modern life; and (3) the interest and capacity of the student in the high school. He has tried to give a correct impression of events and changes rather than to describe them with literal accuracy, as literal accuracy is impossible in so brief an account. Even if it were not impossible, it would be undesirable, for an exact, detailed account would render obscure the character and the meaning of the movement under consideration. Brief and general as is this survey of a very broad field, the author hopes that he may have made the subject interesting as well as intelligible.
