Download or read book A Letter to a Noble Lord written by Edmund Burke and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-11 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish-British statesman, economist, and philosopher, Edmund Burke wrote this letter when he got stripped of his pension in 1796. He responded by supporting his ideas on government economy and showing how his and other allowances were not conflicting with these ideas. Burke attacked the French Revolution and mentioned how its views endangered the very people after his pension, probably because he was hostile to precisely these ideas. This letter was praised a century and a half after being written as the most significant piece of invective in the English language.

Download or read book Vaudechamp in New Orleans written by William Keyse Rudolph and published by Historic New Orleans. This book was released on 2007 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the 1830s, Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp (1790-1864) spent his winters in Louisiana, establishing himself as the region's leading portrait painter. He was, quite simply, the best-educated artist yet to have worked in New Orleans. Author William Keyse Rudolph traces the life and work of the French portraitist. A star pupil of French master Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp enjoyed a promising apprenticeship in Paris but a competitive marketplace threatened to deny him the full measure of his artistic inheritance. In the winter of 183-32, he left home to test his fortunes in New Orleans, a thriving city whose boundaries and population were expanding. Vaudechamps' sitters, the majority of them French Creoles, were making a clear statement of cultural identity and allegiance by choosing a French artist. His works helped revitalize the Creole community. Vaudechamp in New Orleans is the most thorough examination to date of the career of this remarkable artist. Richly illustrated and compellingly narrated, Vaudechamp in New Orleans marks another winning entry in The Historic New Orleans Collection's Louisiana Biography Series, which is funded by the Laussat Society."--from Amazon.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the Dallas Museum of Art has expanded its collection of South Asian art from a small number of Indian temple sculptures to nearly 500 works, including Indian Hindu and Buddhist sculptures, Himalayan Buddhist bronze sculptures and ritual objects, artwork from Southeast Asia, and decorative arts from India's Mughal period. Artworks in the collection have origins from the former Ottoman empire to Java, and architectural pieces suggest the grandeur of buildings in the Indian tradition. This volume details the cultural and artistic significance of more than 140 featured works, which range from Tibetan thangkas and Indian miniature paintings to stone sculptures and bronzes. Relating these works to one another through interconnecting narratives and cross-references, scholars and curators provide a broad cultural history of the region. Download or read book Islamic Geometric Patterns written by Eric Broug and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring new patterns with detailed explanatory texts, this revised edition is an inspirational guide for craftspeople and artists alike. The marvels of Islamic patterns—the most recognizable visual expression of Islamic art and architecture—are not just a beautiful accident. The ancient practitioners of this craft used traditional methods of measurement to create dazzling geometric compositions, often based on the repetition of a single pattern. The results are magnificent in their beauty and awe-inspiring in their execution. Now, with the aid of this book, everyone can learn how to master this ancient art and create their own intricate patterns or re-create classic examples. All that is needed is a pencil, a ruler, a compass, and a steady hand. Technical tips demonstrate the geometric basics such as how to create designs from one of the foundational “family” shapes: a square, hexagon, or pentagon. This is followed by step-by-step instructions for reproducing some of the best examples of geometric patterns. Islamic Geometric Patterns contains twenty-three geometric patterns and brief histories of some of the most famous and beautiful Islamic art and architecture from around the world. This revised edition features seven new patterns from locations including: Ak Medrese in Nigde, Turkey; Chellah necropolis in Rabat, Morocco; Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, Pakistan; the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah in Agra, India; the Alcazar in Seville, Spain; Zaouia Moulay Idriss II in Fes, Morocco; and Darwish Pasha Mosque in Damascus, Syria.
Download or read book Painting in the Kangra Valley written by Vijay Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - A detailed survey of the painting styles of Guler and Kangra in the 18th and 19th centuries - Analyses the impact of the Bhakti movement and of Mughal painting on the painting traditions of the region - With more than 150 images of paintings, the book is a visual treat for scholars as well as general readers Painting in the Kangra Valley is an attempt to survey the painting styles of Guler and Kangra, which flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. The painting activity began with Kashmiri painters, who started receiving royal patronage during the reign of Raja Dalip Singh (1695-1741) of Guler. But it attained culmination during the long reign of Maharaja Sansar Chand (1776-1823) of Kangra. The royal atelier of Kangra produced a large number of paintings covering diverse subjects. The advent of the Bhakti movement in north India had a tremendous impact, resulting in a preference for Krishna themes for the artists of Guler and Kangra. The sentiment of love is the main subject of Guler-Kangra paintings. They illustrate the finest specimens of various kinds of nayika described by the Hindi poets of the riti genre. The female figures seen in these paintings are depicted as graceful and beautiful idealizations, handled by the painters with utmost delicacy and tenderness. Vijay Sharma's analytical approach, based on facts, gives new insights into the origin and development of the Guler school and the marked influence of later Mughal painting on the styles of Manaku and Nainsukh. Featuring around 160 images this book is a significant read for researchers as well as connoisseurs.
