Book Perishable and Imperishable

Download or read book Perishable and Imperishable written by W. Tyler Sykora and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to re-examine Paul’s list of building materials in 1 Cor 3:12 in order to propose that all of the materials should be understood as good and necessary for adequately building in Paul’s construction metaphor (1 Cor 3:9-17). Contra the traditional interpretation, which argues that the materials should be broken into two groups of three, namely, three imperishable building materials (gold, silver, and precious stones) and three perishable building materials (wood, hay, and stubble), Paul’s argument concerning the building materials listed in 1 Cor 3:12 is not focused on which materials one uses to build (perishable or imperishable), but rather how one builds (i.e., quality construction with the materials/church members one has). This reading helps the church (and its leaders) understand that all the building materials (church members) are absolutely essential to building of the church. It also emphasizes that leaders of the church must seek to build well with the “folly” of the gospel and not build their ministries upon themselves.

Book Ancient Building Technology Volume 2 Materials 2 Vols

Download or read book Ancient Building Technology Volume 2 Materials 2 Vols written by G. R. H. Wright and published by Brill Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following resume study deals with building material, which together with construction and structures, forms one of the three aspects of building, or equally one of the three factors which constitute the nature of a building. Unlike existing manuals on ancient building, this offers an analytic presentation and the subject matter extends across all ages and regions. The treatment of materials is set out according to a paradigm of nature, manufacture and use, so as to facilitate direct comparison between different modes of the one material, as also between different materials and between different building traditions. This second part is published in two volumes, the first containing texts, the second more than 300 illustrations.

Book Building Construction Before Mechanization

Download or read book Building Construction Before Mechanization written by John Fitchen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1989-04-03 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were huge stones moved from quarries to the sites of Egyptian pyramids? How did the cathedral builders of the Middle Ages lift blocks to great heights by muscle power alone? In this intriguing book John Fitchen explains and illustrates the solutions to these and many other puzzles in preindustrial building construction. This is the first general survey of the practices and role of the builder (as opposed to the designer) in constructing an array of structures. Fitchen's approach gives a valuable hands-on feel for what it's like to work with ropes and ladders, wedges and slings; with crews engaged in well digging, bridge building, and the transporting of obelisks hundreds of miles by water and over land. The buildings discussed range from the tents, tepees, and igloos of nomadic tribes to the monumental pyramids of Egypt, the temples of Greece, the aqueducts of Rome, and the cathedrals of medieval Europe.
