Book excerpt: Ancient Arabic Astrology is a valuable book that designates and explains an ancient esoteric mystery tradition of foretelling that has been shrouded in mystery to most of the world. Arabic astrology is still quite unknown astrology, despite its antiquity. It's based, above all, on the idea that there are opportunities offered to us from our birth to our advancement in life, and in the study of our real abilities, of our character, one can foretell the future. In recent years, the circumstances somewhat have changed, and a new passion has emerged in Arabic astrology and esoterics. Sadly, most of the literature concerning Arabic astrology came in a deformed and incomplete view of Arabic Astrology. A view that reduced the vastness of Arabic astrology signs to a mere date of the birth sign. In doing so it neglected most of what is peculiar to Arabic Astrology and which differentiates it from Chinese and western astrology.

Book A History of Arabic Astronomy

Download or read book A History of Arabic Astronomy written by George Saliba and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1995-07-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Arabic Astronomy is a comprehensive survey of Arabic planetary theories from the eleventh century to the fifteenth century based on recent manuscript discoveries. George Saliba argues that the medieval period, often called a period of decline in Islamic intellectual history, was scientifically speaking, a very productive period in which astronomical theories of the highest order were produced. Based on the most recent manuscript discoveries, this book broadly surveys developments in Arabic planetary theories from the eleventh century to the fifteenth. Taken together, the primary texts and essays assembled in this book reverse traditional beliefs about the rise and fall of Arabic science, demonstrating how the traditional “age of decline” in Arabic science was indeed a “Golden Age” as far as astronomy was concerned. Some of the techniques and mathematical theorems developed during this period were identical to those which were employed by Copernicus in developing his own non-Ptolemaic astronomy. Significantly, this volume will shed much-needed light on the conditions under which such theories were developed in medieval Islam. It clearly demonstrates the distinction that was drawn between astronomical activities and astrological ones, and reveals, contrary to common perceptions about medieval Islam, the accommodation that was obviously reached between religion and astronomy, and the degree to which astronomical planetary theories were supported, and at times even financed, by the religious community itself. This in stark contrast to the systematic attacks leveled by the same religious community against astrology. To students of European intellectual history, the book reveals the technical relationship between the astronomy of the Arabs and that of Copernicus. Saliba’s definitive work will be of particular interest to historians of Arabic science as well as to historians of medieval and Renaissance European science.

Book Astronomy and Astrology in the Medieval Islamic World

Download or read book Astronomy and Astrology in the Medieval Islamic World written by Edward S. Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1998 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of studies by Edward Kennedy looks first at questions of spherical astronomy, celestial mapping and planetary models, and then deals with astrological calculations. Throughout the author emphasises the importance of advances in mathematics for understanding the development of medieval Arabic sciences. This collection of studies based on previously unexploited manuscript sources in Arabic and Persian. They were written by authors from the 9th through the 15th centuries, whose locations reached from south China in the east through Central Asia, the Middle and Near East, and North Africa, to Spain in the west. The topics are predominately astronomical rather than astrological. The former include eclipse predictions, problems in spherical astronomy, non-ptolemaic planetary theory, and the achievements of Ulugh Beg and his observatory. Astrological subjects treated are the method of calculating the ascendant, and how to determine astrological houses and lots. An astrological history of the career of Genghis Khan is also described.

This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predictions for each year of life go back to the earliest times of Hellenistic astrology. Elaborated by Persian and Arabic astrologers who emphasized the revolution of the nativity, known today as the solar return chart, annual predictive techniques then spread eastward into India and westward into Latin Europe during the Middle Ages. For the first time, this book draws together material on annual predictions from ancient and medieval authors writing in Greek, Arabic and Sanskrit, demonstrating their methods with a wealth of present-day example charts. While covering historical background and principles of interpretation, Annual Predictive Techniques is above all a manual of practical astrology, a guide to concrete prediction intended for intermediate students. Separate chapters are devoted to illustrating the use of primary directions and profections together with anniversary transits. The reader is then shown how to integrate these techniques step by step with the solar return chart. The final chapter discusses ways of subdividing a year and identifying times of major importance.

Book Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice

Download or read book Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice written by DEMETRA. GEORGE and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEVELOPED UNDER THE SHADOWS of the Egyptian temples, Hellenistic astrology is an ancient form of divination inherited from Mesopotamian wisdom traditions. Distilled in Græco-Roman antiquity, and refined in the fires of philosophy and astronomy, it forms the bedrock of traditional western astrology (while also bearing profound similarities to Jyotish or Vedic astrology). Drawing on a body of Greek texts that have remained largely untranslated for almost two-thousand years, Demetra George brings the contemporary practice of astrology back to its ancient roots. Scholar, translator, and practitioner, her work reveals the potent cosmological veins that bear the lifeblood of traditional astrology. Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice is, in essence, a training manual for the study and practice of Hellenistic astrology. In two volumes, it provides the complete foundations and detailed dynamics of ancient chart-reading techniques. Each volume and each technique is richly illustrated with diagrams, example charts, and practical exercises. Volume 1: Assessing Planetary Condition In ancient cosmology, the planetary divinities symbolised the hierarchy of forces that shape our lives in the sublunary world. Not all planets are created equal in a given nativity, however, and so the first step of the practicing astrologer is to assess the condition of each planet in a chart in order to determine its effectiveness (or lack thereof) in the native's life. To this end, this volume provides a series of rigorous methods for evaluating the condition of each planet in a birth chart through the lenses of classification (sect, gender, benefic/malefic), signs and rulerships (residences, reception, exaltation, trigons, bounds), the solar phase cycle (speed, direction, visibility, phase, phasis), lunar considerations (course, phases, bonding, nodes, bending, eclipses, prenatal lunation), and aspects (configurations, witnessing, testimony, bonification, maltreatment, adherence, overcoming, rays). Finally, it brings all of these factors together in a powerful synthesis that unlocks the layers of a chart with unrivaled precision.

Book The Jewel of Annual Astrology

Download or read book The Jewel of Annual Astrology written by Martin Gansten and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-08-03 with total page 1044 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewel of Annual Astrology is an encyclopaedic treatise on Tājika or Sanskritized Perso-Arabic astrology, dealing particularly with the casting and interpretation of anniversary horoscopes. Authored in 1649 CE by Balabhadra Daivajña, court astrologer to Shāh Shujāʿ – governor of Bengal and second son of the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān – it casts light on the historical development of the Tājika school by extensive quotations from earlier works spanning five centuries. With this first-ever scholarly edition and translation of a Tājika text, Martin Gansten makes a significant contribution not only to the study of an important but little known knowledge tradition, but also to the intellectual historiography of Asia and the transmission of horoscopic astrology in the medieval and early modern periods.

Book The Arabic Parts in Astrology

Download or read book The Arabic Parts in Astrology written by Robert Zoller and published by Inner Traditions. This book was released on 1989-05-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dating from antiquity, the doctrine of the Arabic parts has been virtually lost to Western astrological practice since the 17th century. In his book, Robert Zoller retrieves this valuable key to prediction and provides a clear and simple guide to its practical application. The Arabic parts enable the astrologer to investigate the “inner” meaning of the horoscope and thus to go beyond the “outer” aspects expressed by the arrangement of the planets, signs, and houses. The first section of the book explains how fate, or karma, can be understood through the parts and the esoteric nature of number. The second section includes a translation of the 13th-century Latin text on the parts by the famed court astrologer, Bonatti; this work includes the basic ninety-seven parts, dealing with all areas of life--from war, commodities speculation, and professional life to marriage and partnerships--in addition to the seventy-three parts from various medieval sources. In the third section of the book, the author illustrates the practical use of the parts in natal, horary, and mundane astrology. His understanding of the parts and their place in a comprehensive interpretation of any horoscope is presented with lucidity and insight , unraveling for the reader this fascinating and long-neglected astrological science.

Book The Sun of Knowledge Shams Al Ma arif

Download or read book The Sun of Knowledge Shams Al Ma arif written by Ahmad ibn 'Ali al-Buni and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sun of Knowledge (Shams al-Ma'arif) is one of the most revered historical grimoires of the Arabic corpus. Feared by some, hallowed by others, it is one of the most famous - or infamous - books in the Arabic-speaking and Islamicate world. Written in Egypt in the thirteenth century by a Sufi mystic and mage of Algerian origin, the Shams presents the fundamentals of Arabic-Islamic occult work - from spiritual cosmology and astrology (including various particularly lunar magics) to working with spirits and jinn, magical employment of letters and numbers, and the occult applications of the Qur'an - thereby comprising a veritable encyclopedia of Islamicate magical wisdom and formulae. Images and descriptions of amulets and talismans adorn it. Numerous beautiful manuscripts of the Sun of Knowledge have survived, various of which have been used as a basis for this present work. Never before published in English, this selected translation includes sections of the Sun of Knowledge on the mysteries of the letters, astrological timings, lunar mansions, the ancient Arab beliefs surrounding the stars, planetary matters, astronomy, the angels for and workings pertaining to the four seasons, summoning the jinn, the employment of the names of God for many and varied purposes, the construction of the famed ring of Solomon, and a miscellany of tried-and-true talismans. This selected translation takes a general approach to a much vaster text, and features illustrations, original artwork, and commentary to assist those unfamiliar with Islamic magic and culture. This edition is also ideal for any student of magic or the occult, classical Arabic astrology and astronomy, Islamic esotericism, or Sufism.
