Book The Origin and Goal of History

Download or read book The Origin and Goal of History written by Karl Jaspers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) was a German psychiatrist and philosopher and one of the most original European thinkers of the twentieth century. As a major exponent of existentialism in Germany, he had a strong influence on modern theology, psychiatry and philosophy. He was Hannah Arendt’s supervisor before her emigration to the United States in the 1930s and himself experienced the consequences of Nazi persecution. He was removed from his position at the University of Heidelberg in 1937, due to his wife being Jewish. Published in 1949, the year in which the Federal Republic of Germany was founded, The Origin and Goal of History is a vitally important book. It is renowned for Jaspers' theory of an 'Axial Age', running from the 8th to the 3rd century BCE. Jaspers argues that this period witnessed a remarkable flowering of new ways of thinking that appeared in Persia, India, China and the Greco-Roman world, in striking parallel development but without any obvious direct cultural contact between them. Jaspers identifies key thinkers from this age, including Confucius, Buddha, Zarathustra, Homer and Plato, who had a profound influence on the trajectory of future philosophies and religions. For Jaspers, crucially, it is here that we see the flowering of diverse philosophical beliefs such as scepticism, materialism, sophism, nihilism, and debates about good and evil, which taken together demonstrate human beings' shared ability to engage with universal, humanistic questions as opposed to those mired in nationality or authoritarianism. At a deeper level, The Origin and Goal of History provides a crucial philosophical framework for the liberal renewal of German intellectual life after 1945, and indeed of European intellectual life more widely, as a shattered continent attempted to find answers to what had happened in the preceding years. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Foreword by Christopher Thornhill.

Book excerpt: “An eloquent expression of a great hope that philosophy may again become an activity really relevant not only to the perennial problems of life and death but to the unusual configurations of such problems in our time.”—Julian N. Hartt, Yale Review “Original, sincere, cultivated, and stimulating.”—Philosophy One of the founders of existentialism, the eminent philosopher Karl Jaspers here presents for the general reader an introduction to philosophy. In doing so, he also offers a lucid summary of his own philosophical thought. In Jaspers’ view, the source of philosophy is to be found “in wonder, in doubt, in a sense of forsakenness,” and the philosophical quest is a process of continual change and self-discovery. In a new foreword to this edition, Richard M. Owsley provides a brief overview of Jaspers’ life and achievement.

Download or read book Laozi s Daodejing From Philosophical and Hermeneutical Perspectives written by Chen Lee Sun and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laozis Daodejing The English and Chinese Translations Based on Laozis Original Daoism From Philosophical and Hermeneutical Perspectives ?????? ??????????? Your work on Lao Tzu promises to be very interesting. --Professor Sir Alfred Ayer (A.J.Ayer) I strongly recommend to you a new translation of Lao Tzu from a very remarkable translator, a Chinese lady Lee Sun Chen Org, who deeply believes in the importance of this work for humanity. --Professor Sir Karl Popper You should make an effort to let the world know of the true Laozi. I like both your Chinese and English translations of Daodejing. --Professor Chern Shiing-Shen????? The authentic philosophical Daoism was originated by Laozi through his meditation (private) and philosophizing(public). He has organized the piecemeal whimsical poetic thinking and incorporated them into his framework; that is the Daoism of Laozi. His book Daodejing embodies an integral frameworkand that should be tackled through philosophy. However, the language of his book is nearly four thousand years old; this hardship should be tackled through the Chinese hermeneutic. In addition, Laozis philosophical Daoism should be discerned from popular religious Daoism, a medley of fanciful thoughts and folklore. Accordingly, the single step to start the long and arduous journey to fathom the very deep wisdom of Laozi is to follow the roadmap of each individuals striving to understands oneself spiritually (self-realization) and the world scientifically. Chen Lee Sun(aka Lee Sun Chen Org): A self-taught and self-critical pursuer of truth as well as the meaning of life. She was a life-long follower of Laozis philosophy--Laoism, but attended Oxford University to study Western philosophy through winning a full scholarship awarded by Government in Taiwan. She has also worked for an MA on linguistics and Chinese hermeneutic in the University of California, Davis. Bertrand Ruseell had great influence on her in her early days. Later her mentor was A.J. Ayer. Most recently her philosophical thinking moved closer to Karl Poppers. Nevertheless Laozis thinking has had been her greatest influence.

Book excerpt: Mysticism and Experience: Twenty-First-Century Approaches embarks on an investigation of the concept of mysticism from the standpoint of academic fields, including philosophy, anthropology, religious studies, mysticism studies, literary studies, art criticism, cognitive poetics, cognitive science, psychology, medical research, and even mathematics. Scholars across disciplines observe that, although it has experienced both cyclical approval and disapproval, mysticism seems to be implicated as a key foundation of religion, alon with the highest forms of social, cultural, intellectual, and artistic creations. This book is divided into four sections: The Exposure, The Symbolic, The Cognitive, and The Scientific, covering all fundamental aspects of the phenomenon known as mysticism. Contributors, taking advantage of recent advances in disciplinary approaches to understanding mystical phenomena, address questions of whether progress can be made to systemically enrich, expand, and advance our understanding of mysticism.
