Book The Perfect Way Or the Finding of Christ

Download or read book The Perfect Way Or the Finding of Christ written by Anna Bonus Kingsford and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1882, The Perfect Way or The Finding of Christ is Anna Kingsford's attempt to bring together Christianity and the Theosophical tradition, which supposes a system of fundamental truths from which all religions are born and seeks to identify that wisdom so that humans may move further along their path to perfection. This perfection, according to Kingsford, is exemplified by Christ, which she sees as a category of person and not a particular historical person. In this construction, anyone is capable of a becoming a Christ and joining with the Divine. Students of religion and spiritual seekers will find this book an interesting read from a once popular religious and philosophical movement. English physician ANNA BONUS KINGSFORD (1846-1888) was also one of the first women in England to be granted a medical degree and served as onetime president of the Theosophical Society. She is also the author of Clothing with the Sun (1889). English writer EDWARD MAITLAND (1824-1897) assisted Anna Kingsford in writing several books and then opened the Esoteric Christian Union in 1891.

Book The Reformation of Machismo

Download or read book The Reformation of Machismo written by Elizabeth E. Brusco and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protestant evangelicalism has spread rapidly in Latin America at the same time that foreign corporations have taken hold of economies there. These concurrent developments have led some observers to view this religious movement as a means of melding converts into a disciplined work force for foreign capitalists rather than as a reflection of conscious individual choices made for a variety of personal, as well as economic, reasons. In this pioneering study, Elizabeth Brusco challenges such assumptions and explores the intra-household motivations for evangelical conversion in Colombia. She shows how the asceticism required of evangelicals (no drinking, smoking, or extramarital sexual relations are allowed) redirects male income back into the household, thereby raising the living standard of women and children. This benefit helps explain the appeal of evangelicalism for women and questions the traditional assumption that organized religion always disadvantages women. Brusco also demonstrates how evangelicalism appeals to men by offering an alternative to the more dysfunctional aspects of machismo. Case studies add a fascinating human dimension to her findings. With the challenges this book poses to conventional wisdom about economic, gender, and religious behavior, it will be important reading for a wide audience in anthropology, women’s studies, economics, and religion. For all students of Latin America, it offers thoughtful new perspectives on a major, grass-roots agent of social change.

Book Factory Girls

  • Author : Leslie T. Chang
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2009-08-04
  • ISBN : 0385520182
  • Pages : 450 pages

Download or read book Factory Girls written by Leslie T. Chang and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening and previously untold story, Factory Girls is the first look into the everyday lives of the migrant factory population in China. China has 130 million migrant workers—the largest migration in human history. In Factory Girls, Leslie T. Chang, a former correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Beijing, tells the story of these workers primarily through the lives of two young women, whom she follows over the course of three years as they attempt to rise from the assembly lines of Dongguan, an industrial city in China’s Pearl River Delta. As she tracks their lives, Chang paints a never-before-seen picture of migrant life—a world where nearly everyone is under thirty; where you can lose your boyfriend and your friends with the loss of a mobile phone; where a few computer or English lessons can catapult you into a completely different social class. Chang takes us inside a sneaker factory so large that it has its own hospital, movie theater, and fire department; to posh karaoke bars that are fronts for prostitution; to makeshift English classes where students shave their heads in monklike devotion and sit day after day in front of machines watching English words flash by; and back to a farming village for the Chinese New Year, revealing the poverty and idleness of rural life that drive young girls to leave home in the first place. Throughout this riveting portrait, Chang also interweaves the story of her own family’s migrations, within China and to the West, providing historical and personal frames of reference for her investigation. A book of global significance that provides new insight into China, Factory Girls demonstrates how the mass movement from rural villages to cities is remaking individual lives and transforming Chinese society, much as immigration to America’s shores remade our own country a century ago.
