Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean when we call a politician "corrupt"? Is corruption a disease like cancer that can actually kill a human being who contracts it? Or is it more like a cold or flu, contagious and annoying but not life-threatening? How can we ensure that our state and federal governments do not evolve into environments of corruption we thought possible only in third-world countries? In the ANATOMY OF CORRUPTION, Dr. Williams describes this social disease from the inside out, teaching us how each of us can spot and prevent the symptoms within ourselves, nip them in the bud, and even destroy them if they have already taken root. This is a handbook for those of us who interact with other people. It should be required reading for those who have accepted leadership roles.

Book The Anatomy of Post Communist Regimes

Download or read book The Anatomy of Post Communist Regimes written by Bálint Magyar and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-20 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a single, coherent framework of the political, economic, and social phenomena that characterize post-communist regimes, this is the most comprehensive work on the subject to date. Focusing on Central Europe, the post-Soviet countries and China, the study provides a systematic mapping of possible post-communist trajectories. At exploring the structural foundations of post-communist regime development, the work discusses the types of state, with an emphasis on informality and patronalism; the variety of actors in the political, economic, and communal spheres; the ways autocrats neutralize media, elections, etc. The analysis embraces the color revolutions of civil resistance (as in Georgia and in Ukraine) and the defensive mechanisms of democracy and autocracy; the evolution of corruption and the workings of “relational economy”; an analysis of China as “market-exploiting dictatorship”; the sociology of “clientage society”; and the instrumental use of ideology, with an emphasis on populism. Beyond a cataloguing of phenomena—actors, institutions, and dynamics of post-communist democracies, autocracies, and dictatorships—Magyar and Madlovics also conceptualize everything as building blocks to a larger, coherent structure: a new language for post-communist regimes. While being the most definitive book on the topic, the book is nevertheless written in an accessible style suitable for both beginners who wish to understand the logic of post-communism and scholars who are interested in original contributions to comparative regime theory. The book is equipped with QR codes that link to www.postcommunistregimes.com, which contains interactive, 3D supplementary material for teaching.

Book The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption

Download or read book The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption written by Tomas Brytting and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book explores what happens when the fine line between competitive excellence and fraudulent and corrupt practice is crossed. Whilst most fraud literature focuses on the individual perpetrator, The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption looks at how organizations as a whole and the people within it behave when fraud and corruption occur. By presenting a theoretical basis and a practical methodology for fraud risk awareness training, the book helps risk management professionals, and all those in critical corporate roles to redesign and train their organizations to strengthen their culture and become more resistant and resilient to the ever present threat of fraud and corruption. The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption demonstrates that what we see as objective facts are not always what they seem. The qualified and uniquely experienced authors present a refreshing interpretation of Cressey's triangle of need, opportunity and rationalization. They employ a drama metaphor to reflect the interaction between fraudsters, victims and bystanders on the organizational stage. Corporate design, management and culture dictate what behaviour is normal or abnormal, whether it be manager and employee behaviour or their ability to become suspicious and question apparently improper actions. Using actual cases and investigations, the organizational conditions that give rise to fraud and corruption are explored. The authors then provide important insights as to how employees may be trained and motivated to reduce the likelihood and impact of fraudulent incidents. Whilst fundamentally a practical guide, this book is also essential reading for academics wanting to stay abreast of the latest developments in the study of ethics, organizational and work psychology and sociology, and criminology.

Book Anatomy of State Capture

Download or read book Anatomy of State Capture written by Nina Callaghan and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the release of the Public Protector’s State of Capture Report in November 2016, South Africans have been witness to an explosion of almost daily revelations of corruption, mismanagement and abuses by those entrusted to lead the nation. The extent of this betrayal is overwhelming and it is often difficult to distil what actually happened during the Zuma administration. This book draws on the insights and expertise of 19 contributors from various sectors and disciplines to provide an account of what transpired at strategic sites of the state capture project. The ongoing threat of state capture demands a response that probes beyond what happened to understanding how it was allowed to happen. The stubborn culture of corruption and misgovernance continue to manifest unabated and the predatory practices which enable state capture have not yet been disrupted. It is our hope that the various case studies and analyses presented in this book will contribute to confronting these shortcomings in current discourse, and open avenues for progressive deliberation on how to collectively reclaim the prospects of a just and prosperous South Africa for all.

Download or read book Anatomy of Corruption written by M. Shahid Alam and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination and critique of the functionalist literature on corruption in the political administration of less developed countries (LDCs) indicate that its claims are without empirical foundation. Its theses with regard to the political, economic and administrative effects in most LDCs contrast with the facts. No benefits for development from corruption are found; market corruption, for example, does not appear to improve allocative efficiency. The erosion in a government's capacity to formulate and implement policies making for economic growth is an obstacle to economic progress.

Book Confronting Corruption

Download or read book Confronting Corruption written by Jeremy Pope and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first version of this Source Book argued the case for a "National Integrity System", an holistic approach to transparency and accountability and embracing a range of accountability "pillars", democratic, judicial, media and civil society. The expression has since passed into common usage in development circles, and the argument for an holistic approach to anti-corruption efforts has similarly achieved a widespread consensus. The fight against corruption is not wholly a moral one, in the sense that it is a struggle against the intrinsic "evil" of corruption. Certainly there is a moral element - and one which cuts across al major religions and societies throughout the world. But the compelling reason for the struggle is the suffering and deprivation corruption brings to whole societies, and to the world's most poor. It is concern for the latter, rather than a distaste for the corrupt and their deeds, that rightly drives the global movement against corruption.
