Book excerpt: The handsome black and tan terrier of Wales, the Welsh Terrier is a smart and sensible member of the terrier family who offers owners charm and personality in abundance. Like their loyal, fearless hunting dogs, Welsh Terrier owners are strongly devoted to their happy, responsive dogs. For an experienced dog person, the Welsh is biddable and obedient, though, for the novice, the breed may be too bright (or stubborn) to handle. This is a practical companion dog looking for a like-minded owner to appreciate all his vistures. Welsh owners think as highly of their dogs as the dogs think of themselves! Blessed with a strong constitution and hardy health, the Welsh promises many quality years for the right dedicated owners. Written by long-time Welsh Terrier breeder and popular author Bardi Mc Lennan, this new Special Limited Edition offers an insightful look at the breed's history and origins, the Welsh's characteristics and breed standard as well as comprehensive coverage of puppy selection, care and training. All aspects of care are included in this new colorful volume, including house-training, grooming, feeding, home safety and healthcare. The book also presents a special chapter on recognizing and solving behavioral problems and introduces Welsh Terrier lovers to the exciting world of competitive pure-bred dog sports.

Often it’s an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy of the dog and a solid understanding of terminology used in the world of dogs. Do you know what a judge is talking about when he mentions “stifle let-down,” “shallow brisket,” or “excessive angulation?” K-9 Structure and Terminology defines and illustrates these and hundreds of other terms in easy to understand language so you can train your mind and eye to evaluate dogs. All dogs need sound structure for health, show, work, or sport, and, by learning to see beneath the skin the reader will be more able to work with, understand, and appreciate canis familiaris. Gain a better understanding of: • Breed Standards including breed variations. • How the original purpose of the breed is expressed in the structure of the dog. • Terminology used in veterinary care and dog sports, especially Conformation. • How to identify what is right and sound in any dog you encounter. Bonus! A 31-page glossary of words including common and less common terms. What experts are saying about K-9 Structure and Terminology: "If you wish to significantly improve your knowledge of canine conformation, K-9 Structure and Terminology provides a…comprehensive description of the details…of canine variation. Book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Welsh Terriers

Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Welsh Terriers written by Ross D. Clark DVM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (Welsh terriers) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.
