Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A London aggravated sex-crimes detective would discover his worst fears, in his quest to track down and capture a violent serial rapist, who repeatedly gives the cops some provoking clues prior to attacking and after attacking a victim. Set in modern-day London, the serial rapists always took the time out to surgically remove the clitoris of each victim, after drugging them with anesthetics, and tattooing a clue on their cleavage. But just when British detectives kept their eyes focused on a trail of rapes, and their hopes on catching an elusive perpetrator, something much bigger and more sinister was about to happen.

Book excerpt: Now the Netflix Limited Series Unbelievable, starring Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever • Two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists tell the riveting true crime story of a teenager charged with lying about having been raped—and the detectives who followed a winding path to arrive at the truth. “Gripping . . . [with a] John Grisham–worthy twist.”—Emily Bazelon, New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) On August 11, 2008, eighteen-year-old Marie reported that a masked man broke into her apartment near Seattle, Washington, and raped her. Within days police and even those closest to Marie became suspicious of her story. The police swiftly pivoted and began investigating Marie. Confronted with inconsistencies in her story and the doubts of others, Marie broke down and said her story was a lie—a bid for attention. Police charged Marie with false reporting, and she was branded a liar. More than two years later, Colorado detective Stacy Galbraith was assigned to investigate a case of sexual assault. Describing the crime to her husband that night, Galbraith learned that the case bore an eerie resemblance to a rape that had taken place months earlier in a nearby town. She joined forces with the detective on that case, Edna Hendershot, and the two soon discovered they were dealing with a serial rapist: a man who photographed his victims, threatening to release the images online, and whose calculated steps to erase all physical evidence suggested he might be a soldier or a cop. Through meticulous police work the detectives would eventually connect the rapist to other attacks in Colorado—and beyond. Based on investigative files and extensive interviews with the principals, Unbelievable is a serpentine tale of doubt, lies, and a hunt for justice, unveiling the disturbing truth of how sexual assault is investigated today—and the long history of skepticism toward rape victims. Book Inside the Mind of a Serial Rapist

Download or read book Inside the Mind of a Serial Rapist written by Dennis J. Stevens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not for weak, bleeding heart liberals. My aim is to tell what I learned from the mouths of 61 men who remembered close to 400 sexual assaults and forgot the rest. It all started one day when I saw this sign: "ALL MEN ARE POTENTIAL RAPISTS, BEWARE!" No, I cried at no one and everyone, and decided to examine the question. It was clear that the power brokers turned the study of rape into a political obsession instead of a criminal investigation. Rape, they said, was a devise used by aggressive men to enslave women. Some women were no longer willing to accept the lead of aggressive men. Maybe they're right, but not all men want to control women. Angry women, and some should be, think so! Now, as evidenced by that sign, some angry women stirred concerns inside me demanding inquiry. After the average god-fearing male reads the accounts of violence, manipulation, torture, sexual murder, necrophilla and cannibalism and thinks he's anything like the offenders in this study, then it might be safe to say that all women are potential whores, and that ain't right either.

Book Two Faces of a Serial Rapist

Download or read book Two Faces of a Serial Rapist written by Jack Mallard and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Faces of a Serial Rapist is a true-crime story of shattered dreams, passions, violence, extreme fear, explicit sexual assaults, a sexual predator, and the anatomy of DNA profiling. After three years of burglaries, sexual assaults, and rapes of women in apartments within a few miles of the "Big Chicken", a local landmark restaurant in Marietta, a "John Doe" suspect is arrested. A masked serial rapist would silently enter apartments of women while asleep, and demand, "Don' screan, I won't hurt you, I'll be here only a minute and I'll be gone." At times, the predator would have erectile dysfunction, and once a victim actually fought him off receiving a knife wound ... but could this suspect be the most unlikely serial predator? Terry Greenway was honorably known in his community to be a pillar of the Church, a good citizen with two jobs, a wife and three teen-age sons. In 1992, Greenway was put on trial for 14 felony charges of Rape, Sexual Assaults, and related offenses. Would the new scientific technology of genetics profiling of an individual through testing of the suspect's DNA against the DNA from the cold-case rape kits of victims implicate this family man, whose church members and employers came to his aid in his hour of need? Would victims be required to testify to the most detailed and humiliating personal invasions of their lives and privacy, by using explicit verbal testimony, in their own words? Were the cold cases solved, and a serial rapist taken off the streets? Would this hardworking family man with two jobs, devoted to his church and family, be the masked intruder who, for years, broke into apartments and terrorized women alone at night. The evidence is presented. You be the judge. The author reveals, 20 years later, through interviews of the victims, how their lives have been shattered by their victimization, how they have dealt with their recovery, their continuing fear, and their prospects for the future. Likewise, a personal and unusual interview of the serial rapist revealed his explanations of the past and contemplations for the future, regarding himself, his wife, and family.

Other times they may pinpoint their victims’ comfort zones, such as the bedroom of an unlocked house. In both cases, experienced sexual predators exploit their potential victims’ most unguarded moments. In How Serial Rapists Target Their Victims, Linda Fairstein breaks down the patterns of these violent criminals and describes the day-to-day ways that women can best safeguard against them./divDIV /divDIVOriginally published in Cosmopolitan, this essay is now available in digital format for the first time and features a new introduction by the author./div/div

Book excerpt: Edgar Award Finalist: The hunt for Ronnie Shelton, Cleveland’s West Side Rapist, and the victims who united for justice—“Groundbreaking” (Ann Rule). From 1983 to 1988, serial rapist Ronnie Shelton preyed on the women of Cleveland. Dubbed the West Side Rapist, twenty-seven-year-old Shelton would spy on his victims, stalk them, and brutally assault them in their homes. Arrested at least fifteen times for other crimes, Shelton slipped through the cracks of an overburdened police department so often it seemed he would never be caught. Based on more than 150 interviews with the survivors, the police, psychiatrists, and Shelton himself, this “groundbreaking study of the infinite perils of serial rape” is the extensively researched story of Shelton’s crimes and the five-year pursuit that ended in his capture (Ann Rule). Investigative journalist James Neff also documents the long-term devastation caused by rape and celebrates the courage of the women who helped to put a sexual predator behind bars. It resulted in a sentence of 3,195 years—the longest in Ohio state history. A finalist for the Edgar Award, Unfinished Murder is “not only a riveting nonfiction thriller but an important account about the true nature of sex crimes in America” from the prizewinning true crime journalist who is also the author of The Wrong Man: The Final Verdict on the Dr. Sam Sheppard Murder Case and Mobbed Up: Jackie Presser’s High-Wire Life in the Teamsters, the Mafia, and the FBI, which was the basis for the HBO movie, Teamster Boss (Nicholas Pileggi).

Download or read book Serial Crime written by Wayne Petherick and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-06-13 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serial Crime, Second Edition, examines serial predatory behavior and is divided into two main parts. Part one deals with behavioral profiling, and covers a variety of critical issues from the history of profiling and the theoretical schools of thought to its treatment in the mainstream media. This updated edition includes new sections on the problems of induction, metacognition in criminal profiling, and investigative relevance. Part two deals more specifically with a number of types of serial crime including stalking, rape, murder, and arson. Chapters on each of these crimes provide definitions and thresholds, and discussions of the offenders, the crime, and its dynamics. Considerations for behavioral profiling and investigations and the development of new paradigms in each area are interwoven throughout. Topics are conceptually and practically related since profiling has typically seen most application in serial crimes and similar investigations. The unique presentation of the book successfully connects the concepts and creates links to criminal behavior across crimes—murder, sexual assault, and arson—something no other title does. The connection of serial behavior to profiling, the most useful tool in discovering behavior patterns, is also new to the body of literature available and serves to examine the ideal manner in which profiling can be used in conjunction with behavioral science to positively affect criminal investigations. - Provides a theoretical and practical foundation for understanding the motivation and dynamics in a range of serial offenses - Illustrates the promise, purposes and pitfalls of behavioral profiling in the investigation of various serial crimes - Numerous case examples show the real world uses of behavioral profiling in investigations, as well as highlighting a variety of issues in understanding and investigating serial crime

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth, comprehensive, and integrated approach to understanding the sexual offender's victim selection process. Consolidating the criminological research on rape and the victimological literature on victims, it deepens our knowledge about the offender, his victim, and the sexual crimes this rapist commits. By selecting salient and useful features of past victim selection typologies, this book develops a detailed assessment of what kind of individuals are likely victims and why. Also, this text examines the explanatory and predictive capability of the victim selection typology it proposes. To this end, the case of Gilbert Escobedo, 'the Ski Mask Rapist,' is thoroughly explored. Following important background material on this power serial rapist, past victimization models and theories are applied to the case for purposes of interpreting and explaining Escobedo's method of selecting victims. Moreover, the victim selection typology developed by the authors is also applied to the Escobedo case. The authors demonstrate where and how their own typology significantly advances our assessment of sexual offenders like the Ski Mask Rapist. The text concludes by reviewing the implications of the authors' model for purposes of future clinical treatment, criminal justice administration and policy, and ongoing research.

Book excerpt: “An explosive, shapeshifting piece of literary real estate, Amber Tamblyn’s arresting debut offers a scathing portrait of American celebrity culture and the way in which it transmutes human tragedy into a vicious circus; victims are forgotten as likes and shares swirl, and ‘news’ becomes a squalid orgy, a lurid feast. Tamblyn takes every risk in this astonishing and innovative work, and succeeds, gloriously.” — Janet Fitch, bestselling author of The Revolution of Marina M. and Paint It Black Vanity Fair's Summer Ultimate Fiction List Entertainment Weekly Summer Preview List In this electric and provocative debut novel, Tamblyn blends genres of poetry, prose, and elements of suspense to give shape to the shocking narratives of victims of sexual violence, mapping the destructive ways in which our society perpetuates rape culture. A violent serial rapist is on the loose, who goes by the name Maude. She hunts for men at bars, online, at home— the place doesn’t matter, neither does the man. Her victims then must live the aftermath of their assault in the form of doubt from the police, feelings of shame alienation from their friends and family and the haunting of a horrible woman who becomes the phantom on which society projects its greatest fears, fascinations and even misogyny. All the while the police are without leads and the media hound the victims, publicly dissecting the details of their attack. What is extraordinary is how as years pass these men learn to heal, by banding together and finding a space to raise their voices. Told in alternating viewpoints signature to each voice and experience of the victim, these pages crackle with emotion, ranging from horror to breathtaking empathy. As bold as it is timely, Any Man paints a searing portrait of survival and is a tribute to those who have lived through the nightmare of sexual assault.

In 2020, we were all looking for solutions and this book was right on time. It is one we should all be reading." —Anita Hill "This standout memoir marks a crucial moment in the discussion of what constitutes a violent crime." —Publishers Weekly, Best Books of 2020 She Said meets Know My Name in Michelle Bowdler's provocative debut, telling the story of her rape and recovery while interrogating why one of society's most serious crimes goes largely uninvestigated. The crime of rape sizzles like a lightning strike. It pounces, flattens, destroys. A person stands whole, and in a moment of unexpected violence, that life, that body is gone. Award-winning writer and public health executive Michelle Bowdler's memoir indicts how sexual violence has been addressed for decades in our society, asking whether rape is a crime given that it is the least reported major felony, least successfully prosecuted, and fewer than 3% of reported rapes result in conviction. Cases are closed before they are investigated and DNA evidence sits for years untested and disregarded Rape in this country is not treated as a crime of brutal violence but as a parlor game of he said / she said. It might be laughable if it didn’t work so much of the time. Given all this, it seems fair to ask whether rape is actually a crime. In 1984, the Boston Sexual Assault Unit was formed as a result of a series of break-ins and rapes that terrorized the city, of which Michelle’s own horrific rape was the last. Twenty years later, after a career of working with victims like herself, Michelle decides to find out what happened to her case and why she never heard from the police again after one brief interview. Is Rape a Crime? is an expert blend of memoir and cultural investigation, and Michelle's story is a rallying cry to reclaim our power and right our world.

Book Hunting a Psychopath The East Area Rapist Original Night Stalker Investigation The Original Investigator Speaks Out

Download or read book Hunting a Psychopath The East Area Rapist Original Night Stalker Investigation The Original Investigator Speaks Out written by Richard Shelby and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JUNE 16, 2016 - At a press conference today in Sacramento, the FBI and local law enforcement agencies announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the East Area Rapist/killer along with a nationwide multimedia campaign to once again bring the case to the public’s attention. Hunting A Psychopath chronicles the on-going search for the identity of the serial rapist and murderer known both as the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker. The author first lays the ground work for how the investigation was conducted. Then using what reports are still available, plus some personal insights, he examines each assault in the order they occurred. Gradually the methods used by the EAR/ONS in first searching out his victims, then stalking them, come to light. The EAR/ONS first surfaced in June,1976,in Sacramento, CA. He was last heard from in May, 1986,in Irvine, CA, where he brutally murdered an eighteen year old woman. In between those years he stayed busy, assaulting fifty-three people, and murdering twelve more, while spreading a blanket of fear across central CA and parts of Southern CA. It has been over thirty-years now,and still he has not been brought to justice. Although there have been other unsolved crimes of this same nature and of even greater magnitude, this series seems to have had a lasting impact on the public -- enough so that a virtual army of private citizens are pursuing this investigation on their own. When time permits, there are full time police officers who also work this investigation. By examining the information from each assault, it gradually becomes clear just how meticulous the EAR/ONS was. Every detail, from selecting a victim, to the actual assault, appear to have been carefully planned and orchestrated. The EAR/ONS was as devoted to committing sexual assaults and murders as anyone devoted to their own profession. In a distorted way, he was a professional rapist / murderer, and quite probably a certifiable psychopath. Perhaps this continuing interest is because those wanting to involve themselves in the investigation know it can still be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
