Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seatbelt which fastened Spriha to Auro’s life was so frayed from the stresses and strains between them, he feared she would eject out any second. That evening at the restaurant, Spriha had confided to Auro, even when they broke up, he was always in her mind. Pulsating, throbbing. Kind of like a tumour. When Auro asked her, why she hadn’t excised him, she said, it was too late, Auro had already spread, inside her. Did she mean it, literally? Had Auro’s half-truth, metastasised, to a point, where it could no longer be surgically removed from Spriha’s life? While Auro holds his tears hostage, why does Spriha extort those promises from him, before she logs out of his life, for the final time? Why does she pass the buck of that envelope to Auro? What’s in it for him? The answers lie across the country in Spriha’s hometown, Kolkata. . . Ferreting down the Departure Hall the airline staffer announces the last and final call. Auro’s feet are cold and his palms sweaty. He has broken promises before. What frigging difference does it make if he breaks one more? Spriha is never going to know. She isn’t watching, anymore. Or is she?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IF WITI'GENSTEIN COULD TALK, COULD WE UNDERSTAND HIM? Perusing the secondary literature on Wittgenstein, I have frequently experienced a perfect Brechtean Entfremdungseffekt. This is interesting, I have felt like saying when reading books and papers on Wittgenstein, but who is the writer talking about? Certainly not Ludwig Wittgenstein the actual person who wrote his books and notebooks and whom I happened to meet. Why is there this strange gap between the ideas of the actual philosopher and the musings of his interpreters? Wittgenstein is talking to us through the posthumous publication of his writings. Why don't philosophers understand what he is saying? A partial reason is outlined in the first essay of this volume. Wittgenstein was far too impatient to explain in his books and book drafts what his problems were, what it was that he was trying to get clear about. He was even too impatient to explain in full his earlier solutions, often merely referring to them casually as it were in a shorthand notation. For one important instance, in The Brown Book, Wittgenstein had explained in some detail what name-object relationships amount to in his view. There he offers both an explanation of what his problem is and an account of his own view illustrated by means of specific examples of language-games. But when he raises the same question again in Philosophical Investigations I, sec.

Book The Anatomy of Criticism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henry Hazlitt
  • Publisher : Ludwig von Mises Institute
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 1610160231
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book The Anatomy of Criticism written by Henry Hazlitt and published by Ludwig von Mises Institute. This book was released on 2007 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Henry Hazlitt published this exceedingly rare book, he was finishing up a three-year position at The Nation as literary critic, and preparing to accept the position as H.L. Mencken's successor at American Mercury. He was struggling with integrating his two main interests: literary criticism and economics. In economics, value is subjective, whereas the key goal in literary criticism is the discovery of something approximating objective value. The text of this book reflects that struggle in the form of a trialogue. Hazlitt has his characters debate the question of literary value, and pushes forward the proposition that the value of literature is discerned and revealed through the operation of the "social mind." So he ends up rejecting relativism while avoiding mistakes in economic theory. A fascinating study, brilliantly conceived and rendered by a master. As an extra bonus here, Hazlitt offers a postscript on the rise of Marxism in literary criticism. He shows how preposterous it is for Marxism to reject the main corpus of Western litertaure as hopelessly bourgeois, even while Marx himself read all the great works in his leisure. This is a highly significant essay becuase it was probably the first attack on Marxist literary deconstructionism ever written!

Book Anatomy of the Qur an

    Book Details:
  • Author : Moshay G.J.O.
  • Publisher : Chick Publications
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 0758908369
  • Pages : 159 pages

Download or read book Anatomy of the Qur an written by Moshay G.J.O. and published by Chick Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim Students Association at the University of California says on their website: "Prophet Muhammad (saas) was the final Messenger of Allah to humanity, and therefore the Qur'an is the last Message which Allah has sent to us. Its predecessors such as the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels have all been superseded. It is an obligation — and blessing — for all who hear of the Qur'an and Islam to investigate it and evaluate it for themselves. Allah has guaranteed that He will protect the Qur'an from human tampering, and today's readers can find exact copies of it all over the world. The Qur'an of today is the same as the Qur'an revealed to Muhammad (saas)." (Emphasis mine). Are Muslims ready for such an investigation and evaluation of the Qur'an? It is a challenge we must take up. Author G.J.O. Moshay approaches this investigation with level-headed gentleness, but nonetheless holds nothing back. He shows that the Qur'an does not stand up under such scrutiny. His logic is both quiet and irresistible. He quotes what the Qur an says about itself, and then asks questions that simply cannot be answered. He goes on to list many of the surprising contradictions found in the Qur'an. He shows how the Qur an claims that Allah can say one thing today, and then change it tomorrow. Is Allah error free? Of interest are the statements in the Qur'an which clearly connect people who even secular history reveal lived over 1,000 years apart. Make no doubt: Moshay is writing from a Christian perspective. What makes him unique is his in-depth knowledge of the Qur'an and its problems.

Book A Field Guide to Lies

Download or read book A Field Guide to Lies written by Daniel J. Levitin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the National Business Book Award From the New York Times bestselling author of The Organized Mind and This Is Your Brain on Music, a primer to the critical thinking that is more necessary now than ever We are bombarded with more information each day than our brains can process—especially in election season. It's raining bad data, half-truths, and even outright lies. New York Times bestselling author Daniel J. Levitin shows how to recognize misleading announcements, statistics, graphs, and written reports, revealing the ways lying weasels can use them. It's becoming harder to separate the wheat from the digital chaff. How do we distinguish misinformation, pseudo-facts, and distortions from reliable information? Levitin groups his field guide into two categories—statistical information and faulty arguments—ultimately showing how science is the bedrock of critical thinking. Infoliteracy means understanding that there are hierarchies of source quality and bias that variously distort our information feeds via every media channel, including social media. We may expect newspapers, bloggers, the government, and Wikipedia to be factually and logically correct, but they so often aren't. We need to think critically about the words and numbers we encounter if we want to be successful at work, at play, and in making the most of our lives. This means checking the plausibility and reasoning—not passively accepting information, repeating it, and making decisions based on it. Readers learn to avoid the extremes of passive gullibility and cynical rejection. Levitin's charming, entertaining, accessible guide can help anyone wake up to a whole lot of things that aren't so. And catch some weasels in their tracks!
