Book The Chequered Past

Download or read book The Chequered Past written by David Anderson Charters and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the forty-year period between 1951 and 1991, Canadian sports car competition underwent a massive change, transforming itself from an amateur recreational pastime to a commercialized profession and from an individual sport to a spectacle for mass consumption. The Chequered Past is the story of the struggle over power and purpose within the Canadian auto sport that led to this transformation. The first comprehensive history of sports car racing and rallying in Canada, The Chequered Past traces the efforts of the national governing body - the Canadian Auto Sport Clubs (CASC) - to bring its sports car competition up to a 'world class' level, and to manage the consequences of those efforts in the second half of the twentieth century. David Charters traces the social origins of the sport and the major trends that shaped it: professionalism, technological change, rising costs, and the influence of commercial sponsors. Charters argues that while early enthusiasts set the sport on a course toward professionalism that would eventually produce world-class Canadian events and racers, that course would also ultimately change the purpose of the sport: from personal recreation to mass entertainment. As technological innovations drove up the costs of competing at the top ranks, racers were forced to rely on sponsors, who commercialized and ultimately gained control of the sport. The end result, Charters argues, was the marginalization of the amateur competitor and of the CASC itself. Based on extensive research into the CASC's records and dozens of interviews with former competitors and officials, The Chequered Past opens a window into the rich but virtually unknown history of the auto sport, and claims for it a place in Canadian sports history.

Book Basic Course in Race Car Technology

Download or read book Basic Course in Race Car Technology written by Lars Frömmig and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the book is on the driving dynamics of racing vehicles. The interaction of the tyre, the aerodynamics, of the chassis and the limited slip differential specific to racing vehicles is dealt with. A chapter on the basics of vehicle dynamics makes it possible to get started with this topic even without prior automotive engineering training. A historical review and a consideration of the essential safety aspects create an understanding of higher-level requirements, which are specified, for example, by the technical regulations.

Book Complete vehicle

Download or read book Complete vehicle written by Michael Trzesniowski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the reader learns the essential differences to the passenger car through the analysis divided according to assemblies. This gives him the tools to apply the detailed knowledge acquired to the design and development of competition vehicles. The course for a successful car is set in the concept phase. For this reason, it is given a lot of space and associated design-related areas such as the choice of materials, lightweight construction, design principles, reliability, etc. are discussed. When considering the vehicle as a whole, however, safety systems (rollover device, crash elements, restraining ropes), the cockpit (driver position, seat with restraint system, steering wheel, gearshift, pedal system), the frame or monocoque, the outer skin and aerodynamic devices (ventilation, aerodynamic drag, downforce) must not be omitted. The detailed, in-depth presentation makes the work just as suitable for the interested motorsport enthusiast as it is for the engineer with a practical interest in questions relating to the complete vehicle. The formula material is prepared in such a way that the book can also be used as a reference work. .

Book The History of AMC Motorsports

Download or read book The History of AMC Motorsports written by Bob McClurg and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When thinking of a manufacturer's racing involvement, AMC is not a manufacturer that immediately comes to mind. Yet even from the very beginning of American motorsports, the companies that became AMC had some serious involvement in motorsport. From the early Nash and Hudson models all the way through the muscle car era, AMC had direct involvement in racing. The success of Nash and Hudson in early NASCAR racing, AMC Javelins in Trans-Am racing, and AMC's involvement with Mark Donahue and Roger Penske in both their Trans-Am and 1970s NASCAR teams prove that AMC was "in it to win it." The History of AMC Motorsports from veteran racing journalist Bob McClurg covers it all, from a Nash–American Motors corporate history, the first years of NASCAR, the 1960s efforts that included Trans-Am and drag racing Super Stock programs, to the Craig Breedlove land speed record efforts when 106 world records were shattered and covered by Hot Rod magazine. And let's not forget the 1970s Trans-Am championships with Donahue and Penske, and finally the NASCAR success with Bobby Allison in the always-curious looking Matador, which is also covered here. Never before has a single volume chronicled the events that encompass AMC racing history. Whether a hardcore racing history fan or a casual enthusiast of the AMC street offerings, The History of AMC Motorsports provides a unique showcase vital to every enthusiast's library.
