Book Rhetoric and Medicine in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Rhetoric and Medicine in Early Modern Europe written by Nancy S. Struever and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close analysis of texts, cultural and civic communities, and intellectual history, the papers in this collection, for the first time, propose a dynamic relationship between rhetoric and medicine as discourses and disciplines of cure in early modern Europe. Although the range of theoretical approaches and methodologies represented here is diverse, the essays collectively explore the theories and practices, innovations and interventions, that underwrite the shared concerns of medicine, moral philosophy, and rhetoric: care and consolation, reading, policy, and rectitude, signinference, selfhood, and autonomy-all developed and refined at the intersection of areas of inquiry usually thought distinct. From Italy to England, from the sixteenth through to the mid-eighteenth century, early modern moral philosophers and essayists, rhetoricians and physicians investigated the passions and persuasion, vulnerability and volubility, theoretical intervention and practical therapy in the dramas, narratives, and disciplines of public and private cure. The essays are relevant to a wide range of readers, including cultural, literary, and intellectual historians, historians of medicine and philosophy, and scholars of rhetoric.

Book Metaphor

Download or read book Metaphor written by and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the present bibliography is to provide the student of metaphor with an up-to-date and comprehensive (albeit not exhaustive) overview of recent publications dealing with various aspects of metaphor in a variety of disciplines. Where the emphasis is primarily on specific works “about” metaphor, mainly in philosophy, linguistics, and psychology, the list has been supplemented with references to studies where metaphor is explicitly recognized as an instrument of research or analysis (e.g., in literature, or in the elaboration of scientific and religious models) or where its use is illustrated.

Download or read book The Body Emblazoned written by Jonathan Sawday and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An outstanding piece of scholarship and a fascinating read, The Body Emblazoned is a compelling study of the culture of dissection the English Renaissance, which informed intellectual enquiry in Europe for nearly two hundred years. In this outstanding work, Jonathan Sawday explores the dark, morbid eroticism of the Renaissance anatomy theatre, and relates it to not only the great monuments of Renaissance art, but to the very foundation of the modern idea of knowledge. Though the dazzling displays of the exterior of the body in Renaissance literature and art have long been a subject of enquiry, The Body Emblazoned considers the interior of the body, and what it meant to men and women in early modern culture. A richly interdisciplinary work, The Body Emblazoned re-assesses modern understanding of the literature and culture of the Renaissance and its conceptualization of the body within the domains of the medical and moral, the cultural and political.

Book Renaissance Fictions of Anatomy

Download or read book Renaissance Fictions of Anatomy written by Devon L. Hodges and published by Univ of Massachusetts Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first significant study of a genre that was popular in Renaissance England, the anatomy. In a wide range of texts--theological, scientific, and literary--Renaissance writers used their pens as scalpels to strip away false appearances in order to expose the truth. Devon L. Hodges explains this "impulse to dissect" as a symptom of a cultural transformation. The anatomy, she argues, is a transitional form marking the shift from a metaphorical to an analytical view of the world. Following a discussion of the anatomy form and the impact of medical methods on the practice of writing, Hodges offers innovative interpretations of several English anatomies: Lyly's Euphues: Anatomy of Wit, Nashe's Anatomy of Absurdity, Shakespeare's As You Like It and King Lear, Bacon's project to conduct an "Anatomy of the World," and Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy. Throughout these readings, Hodges makes use of contemporary literary theory to illuminate the difficult process of cultural transformation.

Book The Revival of Antique Philosophy in the Renaissance

Download or read book The Revival of Antique Philosophy in the Renaissance written by John L. Lepage and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the revival of antique philosophy in the Renaissance as a literary preoccupation informed by wit. Humanists were more inspired by the fictionalized characters of certain wise fools, including Diogenes the Cynic, Socrates, Aesop, Democritus, and Heraclitus, than by codified systems of thought. Rich in detail, this study offers a systematic treatment of wide-ranging Renaissance imagery and metaphors and presents a detailed iconography of certain classical philosophers. Ultimately, the problems of Renaissance humanism are revealed to reflect the concerns of humanists in the twenty-first century.

Book The Spaces of Renaissance Anatomy Theater

Download or read book The Spaces of Renaissance Anatomy Theater written by Leslie R. Malland and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The space of Renaissance anatomy is not solely in the physical theatre. As this collection demonstrates, the space of the theatre encompasses every aspect of Renaissance culture, from its education systems, art, and writing to its concepts of identity, citizenship, and the natural world. This book argues that Renaissance anatomy theatres were spaces of intersection that influenced every aspect of their culture, and that scholars should broaden their concept of anatomy theatres to include more than the physical space of the theatre itself. Instead, we should approach the anatomy theatres as spaces where cultural expression is influenced by the hands-on study of human cadavers. This book enters the ongoing conversation surrounding Renaissance anatomy by dialogically engaging with such scholars as Jonathan Sawaday, Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks, Kathryn Schwarz, and primary texts such as ‘De humani corporis fabric’, Montaigne’s ‘Essais’, and Shakespearean plays. The book also features Renaissance artwork alongside works by Laurence Winram.
