Download or read book Art and the Brain written by Amy Ione and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her new book Art and the Brain: Plasticity, Embodiment and the Unclosed Circle, Amy Ione offers a profound assessment of our ever-evolving view of the biological brain as it pertains to embodied human experience. She deftly takes the reader from Deep History into our current worldview by surveying the range of nascent responses to perception, thoughts and feelings that have bred paradigmatic changes and led to contemporary research modalities. Interweaving carefully chosen illustrations with the emerging ideas of brain function that define various time periods reinforces a multidisciplinary framework connecting neurological research, theories of mind, art investigations, and intergenerational cultural practices. The book will serve as a foundation for future investigations of neuroscience, art, and the humanities.
Download or read book Modern Drug use written by R.D. Mann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541), commonly called Paracelsus, was both one of the most original medical thinkers of the sixteenth century and was the man who made opium (as laudanum), arsenic, copper sulphate, iron, lead, mercury, potassium sulphate, and sulphur part of the pharmacopoeia. A man of many parts, but a pioneer chemist, Paracelsus can be regarded as the originator of a body of work which was the precursor of chemical pharmacology and therapeutics. To no small extent he stands, therefore, as a father figure of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Today's physician who wants to look at that industry since the days of Paracelsus and weigh the great gains against the problems soon encounters difficulties. To diminish them, this Enquiry approaches its subject from historical principles. This gives increased perspective to questions asked late in the boo- these questions being prompted by medical practice outside the industry and some twenty years of drug development activity within it. In antiquity medicines often seem to have been used as part of magic and primitive man thought disease to be due to supernatural forces which he could influence. The legacy remains - and in trying to sort out what is rational in our use of drugs today we have to separate our small bits of science from the ancient magic and from modern commercial pressures and conditioning.

Download or read book The Fabric of the Body written by K. B. Roberts and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on this subject to be published in the English language for more than fifty years. It is a survey and anthology of the major developments, styles, and trends in anatomical illustration through more than 700 years. Anatomy was a preoccupation of renaissance scholars and artists in the universities and academies of Europe. By the mid 1500s sophisticated anatomy books were widely distributed. It was primarily the illustrations rather than the text that spread information on this descriptive science. This bookshows how anatomists and their collaborating artists presented the important aspects of their subjects to doctors, medical students, and others, coincidentally revealing their attitude to the living and the dead human body. A narrative history of the context in which these illustrations wereproduced is supplemented by a precise consideration of the anatomy shown in each plate reproduced. The book will appeal to anyone with an academic interest in anatomy, illustrative art, or figure drawing. It is a record of an important aspect of the development of modern medicine and surgery. It is lavishly illustrated and will be a handsome production with a slip case, thus it should have amarket amongst collectors of fine art and members of the medical profession.

Download or read book John Baskerville A Bibliography written by Philip Gaskell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1959 bibliography lists and describes everything that came from the press of John Baskerville of Birmingham, who was appointed Printer to the University of Cambridge in 1758. After an introduction in which Dr Gaskell describes the methods that he has adopted and the conclusions that he has drawn from the investigation, there are two main parts: Specimens, Proposals and other Ephemera, and Books. Each entry contains a quasi-facsimile transcription of the title page, and gives details of formula contents amongst several other things. This, which was the first full bibliography of Baskerville's work, will be an essential tool for Baskerville collectors and for historians of printing and typography as well as for bibliographers. There are twelve collotype plates, most of which illustrate unique copies of Baskerville's ephemera; and there is in addition a full-size facsimile of Baskerville's last type specimen.
