Book Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy Studies on Copper Alumina Interfaces

Download or read book Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy Studies on Copper Alumina Interfaces written by Richard Y. Hashimoto and published by . This book was released on 1999-06-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A diffusion bonded copper-alumina interface had been studied using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Investigations of polycrystalline alumina showed that silica, a common commercial impurity, was present at the triple junctions in the form of fine mullite crystals in a glassy, silicon rich phase. Silicon was also detected along the alumina grain boundaries near triple junctions. There was no observed diffusion of Cu into alumina or alumina into copper. TEM results indicated no interface phase in the these vacuum formed samples. EDX studies of the interfaces revealed that silicon was present in varying concentrations from 1.O at.% to 10.0 at.%. Using spatial difference, PEELS at the interface showed two distinct residuals: a coordination similar to an aluminosilicate for silicon rich areas and a coordination similar to a metal to metal coordination for low silicon regions. Comparison of the Si rich interface residual PEELS spectra to that of the alumina triple junction PEELS spectra showed that the interface had atomic environments similar to that of as aluminosilicate, such as mullite. The interface results suggest that Si segregation may contribute to the observed higher strength of the metal-ceramic composite by void filling and modified bond character.

Book High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy of Metallic Film laser irradiated Alumina Couples

Download or read book High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy of Metallic Film laser irradiated Alumina Couples written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A near-surface thin layer is melted when single crystal alumina (sapphire) is pulsed laser-irradiated in an Ar-4%H[sub 2] atmosphere.[gamma]-alumina grows epitaxially from the (0001) face of[alpha]-alumina (sapphire) during the rapid solidification of this layer that occurs once the laser pulse is over. Cross sectional high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveals that the interface between unmelted sapphire and[gamma]-alumina is atomistically flat with steps of one to a few close-packed oxygen layers; however, pronounced lattice distortions exist in the resolidified[gamma]-alumina. HRTEM also is used to study the metal-ceramic interface of a copper film deposited on a laser-irradiated alumina substrate. The observed changes of the interfacial stricture relative to that of unexposed substrates are correlated with the strong enhancement of film-substrate bonding promoted by laser irradiation. HRTEM shows that a thin amorphous film is produced after irradiation of 99.6% polycrystalline alumina. Formation of a diffuse interface and atomic rearrangements that can take place in metastable phases contribute to enhance the bonding strength of copper to laser-irradiated alumina.

Book High Resolution Imaging and Spectrometry of Materials

Download or read book High Resolution Imaging and Spectrometry of Materials written by Frank Ernst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characterisation of materials and material systems is an essential aspect of materials science. A few decades ago it became obvious that, because the properties of materials depend so critically on the microstructure of their components, this characterisation must be determined to the atomic level. This means that the position - as well as the nature - of individual atoms has to be determined at "critical" regions close to defects such as dislocations, interfaces, and surfaces. The great impact of advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques became apparent in the area of semiconducting materials, where the nature of internal interfaces between silicon and the corresponding silicides could be identified, and the results used to enhance the understanding of the properties of the compounds studied. At that time, advanced TEM techniques existed predominantly in the US. However, advanced TEM instrumentation was not available in the ma terials science and solid-state science communities in Germany. This gap was bridged by the late Peter Haasen who, after a visit to the US, initiated a Priority Programme on Microstructural Characterisation at the Volkswagen Foundation (Hannover). The programme was in effect from 1985 to 1997 and supported a wide range of research projects - from fundamental, trendy, innovative projects to projects in applied materials science.

Book Basic Science of Preparation Transmission Electron Microscopy and Modeling of Copper and Aluminum Targets

Download or read book Basic Science of Preparation Transmission Electron Microscopy and Modeling of Copper and Aluminum Targets written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research involves an effort to study and compare the residual microstructures and dynamic behavior of two metallic targets of finite thicknesses, namely OFHC (oxygen-free high-conductivity) copper and 7039 aluminum, subjected to ballistic impact and perforation by a tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) projectile. Also included in this work is an attempt to validate mathematical modelling of experimental results through the use of a computer hydrocode, AUTODYN-2D, which allows for the simulation of ballistic penetration/perforation events and possible differentiation of fundamental mechanisms through validation strategies. These targets represent two very different FCC materials. The 7039 aluminum is extremely hard in contrast to a softer, ductile copper. The "failure" mechanisms appear to be different on a macroscopic scale, but may be similar on a microscopic scale. A preliminary investigation of the residual penetration channels in these two targets revealed significant microstructural differences. In the 7039 aluminum target there is a limited extent of microstructural deformation seen through optical microscopy, though numerous shear bands are observed near the channel wall and at the spalled region. Observations of the OHFC target, on the other hand, show a narrow region of recrystallized grains adjacent to the crater wall, beyond which is an extensive area of microband clusters. Similar features have been observed previously in connection with hypervelocity impact cratering in copper.
