Download or read book Environmental Analysis and Technology for the Refining Industry written by James G. Speight and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-09-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely, hands-on guide to environmental issues and regulatorystandards for the petroleum industry Environmental analysis and testing methods are an integral part ofany current and future refining activities. Today's petroleumrefining industry must be prepared to meet a growing number ofchallenges, both environmental and regulatory. Environmental Analysis and Technology for the Refining Industryfocuses on the analytical issues inherent in any environmentalmonitoring or cleanup program as they apply to today's petroleumindustry, not only during the refining process, but also duringrecovery operations, transport, storage, and utilization. Designedto help today's industry professionals identify test methods formonitoring and cleanup of petroleum-based pollutants, the bookprovides examples of the application of environmental regulationsto petroleum refining and petroleum products, as well as currentand proposed methods for the mitigation of environmental effectsand waste management. Part I introduces petroleum technology, refining, and products, andreviews the nomenclature used by refiners, environmentalscientists, and engineers. Part II discusses environmentaltechnology and analysis, and provides information on environmentalregulation and the impact of refining. Coverage includes: * In-depth descriptions of analyses related to gaseous emissions, liquid effluents, and solid waste * A checklist of relevant environmental regulations * Numerous real-world examples of the application of environmentalregulations to petroleum refining and petroleum products * An analysis of current and proposed methods of environmentalprotection and waste management

Book Analytical Methods for Drinking Water

Download or read book Analytical Methods for Drinking Water written by Philippe Quevauviller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-12-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drinking water policies and research are intimately linked. It is thanks to the scientific progress made over the last 25 years in identifying and controlling toxic products in drinking water that regulations have developed in such a way that the protection of public health from waterborne diseases has drastically improved. The integration of research outputs into the policy-making progress requires close cooperation among the scientific and policy communities, which is not always straightforward. Exchanges among scientific and policy-making communities are certainly representing key elements of progress for a better environmental protection. In this respect, analytical developments linked to drinking water are at the core of the science-policy debate. This book "Analytical Methods for Drinking Water: Advances in Sampling and Analysis" reflects this awareness in joining recent analytical developments with policy considerations. A first chapter gives an overview of EU and US drinking water policies, as well as on standardization. Analytical developments are described in depth in the second chapter, focusing on bromate in drinking water. The third chapter deals with the development of a sampling protocol for lead in drinking water, thus mixing analytical development with standardization needs. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on standardization aspects (pre-normative research) related to materials in contact with drinking water. This book, written by experts in the field of drinking water policy and analysis, illustrates recent scientific advances in this area, which have contributed to policy development and will be of direct use to policy-makers, water scientists, researchers and analytical laboratories.

Book Guidelines for drinking water quality small water supplies

Download or read book Guidelines for drinking water quality small water supplies written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-02-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small drinking-water supplies commonly experience operational, managerial, technical and resourcing challenges that impact their ability to deliver safe and reliable services. The needs and opportunities associated with these supplies therefore warrant explicit consideration in policies and regulations. These Guidelines, specifically tailored to small water supplies, build on over 60 years of guidance by the World Health Organization (WHO) on drinking-water quality and safety. They focus on establishing drinking-water quality regulations and standards that are health based and context appropriate; on proactively managing risks through water safety planning and sanitary inspections; and on carrying out independent surveillance. The guidance is intended primarily for decision-makers at national and subnational levels with responsibility for developing regulatory frameworks and support programmes related to these activities. Other stakeholders involved in water service provision will also benefit from the guidance in this document. Designed to be practical and accessible, these Guidelines offer clear guidance that is rooted in the principle of progressive improvement. State-of-the-art recommendations and implementation guidance are provided, drawn from a comprehensive evidence review and established good practices. Additionally, case examples are provided from countries and areas around the world to demonstrate how the guidance in this publication has been implemented in practice in a wide variety of contexts. Together with WHO’s 2024 Sanitary inspection packages – a supporting tool for the Guidelines for drinking-water quality: small water supplies, these Guidelines update and supersede WHO’s 1997 Guidelines for drinking-water quality. Volume 3: surveillance and control of community supplies. Key changes to this updated publication include a greater focus on preventive risk management and a broader range of small water supplies covered, including those managed by households, communities and professional entities.

Book Chemical Occurrence Data Sets for Source Water Assessments

Download or read book Chemical Occurrence Data Sets for Source Water Assessments written by K. Stevens and published by International Water Assn. This book was released on 2004 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), established in 1974, is designed to protect the quality of drinking water in the United States. Congress amended the SDWA in 1996 to address the current source water problems and assist the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), state agencies, and local water utilities to plan for future drinking water quality challenges and assure the sustainable resource of safe drinking water. Specifically, Section 1453 of the 1996 SDWA amendments requires all states to establish Source Water Assessment Programs (SWAPs). This includes the submission of a plan to the USEPA detailing how the states will delineate source water assessment areas, inventory significant contaminants in these areas, and determine the susceptibility of each public water supply to contamination. ... The collection of existing data on chemical occurrence is one tool to help determine potential contaminants and perform susceptibility analyses for surface and groundwater. As a result, the American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AwwaRF) funded this research project to identify, list, and characterize chemical occurrence databases and data sets that can be used by states and utilities to perform source water assessments.
