Book Analytic Torsion and the Cheeger M ller Theorem

Download or read book Analytic Torsion and the Cheeger M ller Theorem written by Elizabeth Jagersma and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reidemeister torsion (or R-torsion) was originally introduced by K. Reidemeister in 1935, who used it to classify 3-dimensional lens spaces. R-torsion is a homeomorphism invariant which may be defined using core concepts in algebraic topology and linear algebra. Later, in 1971, D. Ray and I. Singer defined an analytic analogue of R-torsion, which involved using the zeta function to define a regularized determinant of the Laplacian on the space of differential forms. After proving that their analytic torsion (which has come to be known as Ray-Singer torsion, or RS-torsion) satisfies many of the same properties of R-torsion, Ray and Singer conjectured that RS-torsion and R-torsion are equal for closed Riemannian manifolds, and provided computational evidence. This conjecture was proven independently in celebrated papers by W. Müller and J. Cheeger. In 1994, J. M. Bismut and W. Zhang gave an analytic proof of a generalization of the Cheeger- Müller theorem. Their approach utilizes the Witten deformation of the Laplacian to factorize the Ray-Singer torsion into large and small components, which then may be analyzed separately. In 2003, M. Braverman gave another proof which uses Bismut and Zhang's analysis of the small component of the RS-torsion, but introduces a clever comparison analysis of the large component of the RS-torsion. In this thesis we present Braverman's analytic approach. However, we also provide original proofs for some of the results which are used.

Book Noncommutative Maslov Index and Eta Forms

Download or read book Noncommutative Maslov Index and Eta Forms written by Charlotte Wahl and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author defines and proves a noncommutative generalization of a formula relating the Maslov index of a triple of Lagrangian subspaces of a symplectic vector space to eta-invariants associated to a pair of Lagrangian subspaces. The noncommutative Maslov index, defined for modules over a $C *$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, is an element in $K_0(\mathcal{A})$. The generalized formula calculates its Chern character in the de Rham homology of certain dense subalgebras of $\mathcal{A}$. The proof is a noncommutative Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for a particular Dirac operator twisted by an $\mathcal{A}$-vector bundle. The author develops an analytic framework for this type of index problem.

Book Persistence Theory From Quiver Representations to Data Analysis

Download or read book Persistence Theory From Quiver Representations to Data Analysis written by Steve Y. Oudot and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistence theory emerged in the early 2000s as a new theory in the area of applied and computational topology. This book provides a broad and modern view of the subject, including its algebraic, topological, and algorithmic aspects. It also elaborates on applications in data analysis. The level of detail of the exposition has been set so as to keep a survey style, while providing sufficient insights into the proofs so the reader can understand the mechanisms at work. The book is organized into three parts. The first part is dedicated to the foundations of persistence and emphasizes its connection to quiver representation theory. The second part focuses on its connection to applications through a few selected topics. The third part provides perspectives for both the theory and its applications. The book can be used as a text for a course on applied topology or data analysis.

Book Variations on a Theme of Borel

Download or read book Variations on a Theme of Borel written by Shmuel Weinberger and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle of the last century, after hearing a talk of Mostow on one of his rigidity theorems, Borel conjectured in a letter to Serre a purely topological version of rigidity for aspherical manifolds (i.e. manifolds with contractible universal covers). The Borel conjecture is now one of the central problems of topology with many implications for manifolds that need not be aspherical. Since then, the theory of rigidity has vastly expanded in both precision and scope. This book rethinks the implications of accepting his heuristic as a source of ideas. Doing so leads to many variants of the original conjecture - some true, some false, and some that remain conjectural. The author explores this collection of ideas, following them where they lead whether into rigidity theory in its differential geometric and representation theoretic forms, or geometric group theory, metric geometry, global analysis, algebraic geometry, K-theory, or controlled topology.

Book The Topological Classification of Stratified Spaces

Download or read book The Topological Classification of Stratified Spaces written by Shmuel Weinberger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the theory for stratified spaces, along with important examples and applications, that is analogous to the surgery theory for manifolds. In the first expository account of this field, Weinberger provides topologists with a new way of looking at the classification theory of singular spaces with his original results. Divided into three parts, the book begins with an overview of modern high-dimensional manifold theory. Rather than including complete proofs of all theorems, Weinberger demonstrates key constructions, gives convenient formulations, and shows the usefulness of the technology. Part II offers the parallel theory for stratified spaces. Here, the topological category is most completely developed using the methods of "controlled topology." Many examples illustrating the topological invariance and noninvariance of obstructions and characteristic classes are provided. Applications for embeddings and immersions of manifolds, for the geometry of group actions, for algebraic varieties, and for rigidity theorems are found in Part III. This volume will be of interest to topologists, as well as mathematicians in other fields such as differential geometry, operator theory, and algebraic geometry.

Book Mathematical Theory of Scattering Resonances

Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Scattering Resonances written by Semyon Dyatlov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering resonances generalize bound states/eigenvalues for systems in which energy can scatter to infinity. A typical resonance has a rate of oscillation (just as a bound state does) and a rate of decay. Although the notion is intrinsically dynamical, an elegant mathematical formulation comes from considering meromorphic continuations of Green's functions. The poles of these meromorphic continuations capture physical information by identifying the rate of oscillation with the real part of a pole and the rate of decay with its imaginary part. An example from mathematics is given by the zeros of the Riemann zeta function: they are, essentially, the resonances of the Laplacian on the modular surface. The Riemann hypothesis then states that the decay rates for the modular surface are all either or . An example from physics is given by quasi-normal modes of black holes which appear in long-time asymptotics of gravitational waves. This book concentrates mostly on the simplest case of scattering by compactly supported potentials but provides pointers to modern literature where more general cases are studied. It also presents a recent approach to the study of resonances on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. The last two chapters are devoted to semiclassical methods in the study of resonances.

Book The Disc Embedding Theorem

Download or read book The Disc Embedding Theorem written by Stefan Behrens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Fields medal winning work of Michael Freedman, this book explores the disc embedding theorem for 4-dimensional manifolds. This theorem underpins virtually all our understanding of topological 4-manifolds. Most famously, this includes the 4-dimensional Poincaré conjecture in the topological category. The Disc Embedding Theorem contains the first thorough and approachable exposition of Freedman's proof of the disc embedding theorem, with many new details. A self-contained account of decomposition space theory, a beautiful but outmoded branch of topology that produces non-differentiable homeomorphisms between manifolds, is provided, as well as a stand-alone interlude that explains the disc embedding theorem's key role in all known homeomorphism classifications of 4-manifolds via surgery theory and the s-cobordism theorem. Additionally, the ramifications of the disc embedding theorem within the study of topological 4-manifolds, for example Frank Quinn's development of fundamental tools like transversality are broadly described. The book is written for mathematicians, within the subfield of topology, specifically interested in the study of 4-dimensional spaces, and includes numerous professionally rendered figures.
