Book Analytic Semigroups and Optimal Regularity in Parabolic Problems

Download or read book Analytic Semigroups and Optimal Regularity in Parabolic Problems written by Alessandra Lunardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book shows how the abstract methods of analytic semigroups and evolution equations in Banach spaces can be fruitfully applied to the study of parabolic problems. Particular attention is paid to optimal regularity results in linear equations. Furthermore, these results are used to study several other problems, especially fully nonlinear ones. Owing to the new unified approach chosen, known theorems are presented from a novel perspective and new results are derived. The book is self-contained. It is addressed to PhD students and researchers interested in abstract evolution equations and in parabolic partial differential equations and systems. It gives a comprehensive overview on the present state of the art in the field, teaching at the same time how to exploit its basic techniques. - - - This very interesting book provides a systematic treatment of the basic theory of analytic semigroups and abstract parabolic equations in general Banach spaces, and how this theory may be used in the study of parabolic partial differential equations; it takes into account the developments of the theory during the last fifteen years. (...) For instance, optimal regularity results are a typical feature of abstract parabolic equations; they are comprehensively studied in this book, and yield new and old regularity results for parabolic partial differential equations and systems. (Mathematical Reviews) Motivated by applications to fully nonlinear problems the approach is focused on classical solutions with continuous or Hölder continuous derivatives. (Zentralblatt MATH)

Book Partial Differential Equations and Functional Analysis

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations and Functional Analysis written by J. Cea and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Grisvard, one of the most distinguished French mathematicians, died on April 22, 1994. A Conference was held in November 1994 out of which grew the invited articles contained in this volume. All of the papers are related to functional analysis applied to partial differential equations, which was Grisvard's specialty. Indeed his knowledge of this area was extremely broad. He began his career as one of the very first students of Jacques Louis Lions, and in 1965, he presented his "State Thesis" on interpolation spaces, using in particular, spectral theory for linear operators in Banach spaces. After 1970, he became a specialist in the study of optimal regularity for par tial differential equations with boundary conditions. He studied singulari ties coming from coefficients, boundary conditions, and mainly non-smooth domains, and left a legacy of precise results which have been published in journals and books. Pierre Grisvard spent most of his career as a full professor at the University of Nice, where he started in 1967. For shorter or longer periods, he visited several foreign countries, and collaborated with some of the most famous mathematicians in his field. He was also an excellent organizer and directed a large number of Ph.D. students. Finally, this volume contains a bibliography of Grisvard's works as well as one paper which he wrote and which has not been published before.

Book Analytical Methods for Markov Semigroups

Download or read book Analytical Methods for Markov Semigroups written by Luca Lorenzi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-07-28 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in book form, Analytical Methods for Markov Semigroups provides a comprehensive analysis on Markov semigroups both in spaces of bounded and continuous functions as well as in Lp spaces relevant to the invariant measure of the semigroup. Exploring specific techniques and results, the book collects and updates the literature associated with Markov semigroups. Divided into four parts, the book begins with the general properties of the semigroup in spaces of continuous functions: the existence of solutions to the elliptic and to the parabolic equation, uniqueness properties and counterexamples to uniqueness, and the definition and properties of the weak generator. It also examines properties of the Markov process and the connection with the uniqueness of the solutions. In the second part, the authors consider the replacement of RN with an open and unbounded domain of RN. They also discuss homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions associated with the operator A. The final chapters analyze degenerate elliptic operators A and offer solutions to the problem. Using analytical methods, this book presents past and present results of Markov semigroups, making it suitable for applications in science, engineering, and economics.

The most recent developments in the field are included, such as the Arendt-Batty-Lyubich-Vu theorem, the spectral mapp- ing theorem of Latushkin and Montgomery-Smith, Weis's theorem on stability of positive semigroup in Lp-spaces, the stability theorem for semigroups whose resolvent is bounded in a half-plane, and a systematic theory of individual stability. Addressed to researchers and graduate students with interest in the fields of operator semigroups and evolution equations, this book is self-contained and provides complete proofs.

Book Moving Interfaces and Quasilinear Parabolic Evolution Equations

Download or read book Moving Interfaces and Quasilinear Parabolic Evolution Equations written by Jan Prüss and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, the authors develop a comprehensive approach for the mathematical analysis of a wide array of problems involving moving interfaces. It includes an in-depth study of abstract quasilinear parabolic evolution equations, elliptic and parabolic boundary value problems, transmission problems, one- and two-phase Stokes problems, and the equations of incompressible viscous one- and two-phase fluid flows. The theory of maximal regularity, an essential element, is also fully developed. The authors present a modern approach based on powerful tools in classical analysis, functional analysis, and vector-valued harmonic analysis. The theory is applied to problems in two-phase fluid dynamics and phase transitions, one-phase generalized Newtonian fluids, nematic liquid crystal flows, Maxwell-Stefan diffusion, and a variety of geometric evolution equations. The book also includes a discussion of the underlying physical and thermodynamic principles governing the equations of fluid flows and phase transitions, and an exposition of the geometry of moving hypersurfaces.

Book Operator Semigroups Meet Complex Analysis Harmonic Analysis and Mathematical Physics

Download or read book Operator Semigroups Meet Complex Analysis Harmonic Analysis and Mathematical Physics written by Wolfgang Arendt and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-12-10 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume originates from a conference held in Herrnhut in June 2013. It provides unique insights into the power of abstract methods and techniques in dealing successfully with numerous applications stemming from classical analysis and mathematical physics. The book features diverse topics in the area of operator semigroups, including partial differential equations, martingale and Hilbert transforms, Banach and von Neumann algebras, Schrödinger operators, maximal regularity and Fourier multipliers, interpolation, operator-theoretical problems (concerning generation, perturbation and dilation, for example), and various qualitative and quantitative Tauberian theorems with a focus on transfinite induction and magics of Cantor. The last fifteen years have seen the dawn of a new era for semigroup theory with the emphasis on applications of abstract results, often unexpected and far removed from traditional ones. The aim of the conference was to bring together prominent experts in the field of modern semigroup theory, harmonic analysis, complex analysis and mathematical physics, and to present the lively interactions between all of those areas and beyond. In addition, the meeting honored the sixtieth anniversary of Prof C. J. K. Batty, whose scientific achievements are an impressive illustration of the conference goal. These proceedings present contributions by prominent scientists at this international conference, which became a landmark event. They will be a valuable and inspiring source of information for graduate students and established researchers.
