Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides clear guidance on leveraging computational techniques to answer social science questions In disciplines such as political science, sociology, psychology, and media studies, the use of computational analysis is rapidly increasing. Statistical modeling, machine learning, and other computational techniques are revolutionizing the way electoral results are predicted, social sentiment is measured, consumer interest is evaluated, and much more. Computational Analysis of Communication teaches social science students and practitioners how computational methods can be used in a broad range of applications, providing discipline-relevant examples, clear explanations, and practical guidance. Assuming little or no background in data science or computer linguistics, this accessible textbook teaches readers how to use state-of-the art computational methods to perform data-driven analyses of social science issues. A cross-disciplinary team of authors—with expertise in both the social sciences and computer science—explains how to gather and clean data, manage textual, audio-visual, and network data, conduct statistical and quantitative analysis, and interpret, summarize, and visualize the results. Offered in a unique hybrid format that integrates print, ebook, and open-access online viewing, this innovative resource: Covers the essential skills for social sciences courses on big data, data visualization, text analysis, predictive analytics, and others Integrates theory, methods, and tools to provide unified approach to the subject Includes sample code in Python and links to actual research questions and cases from social science and communication studies Discusses ethical and normative issues relevant to privacy, data ownership, and reproducible social science Developed in partnership with the International Communication Association and by the editors of Computational Communication Research Computational Analysis of Communication is an invaluable textbook and reference for students taking computational methods courses in social sciences, and for professional social scientists looking to incorporate computational methods into their work.

Book Foundations of Computational Linguistics

Download or read book Foundations of Computational Linguistics written by Roland Hausser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an interdisciplinary field, computational linguistics has its sources in several areas of science, each with its own goals, methods, and historical background. Thereby, it has remained unclear which components fit together and which do not. This suggests three possible approaches to designing a computational linguistics textbook. The first approach proceeds from one's own school of thought, usually determined of study, rather than by a well-informed, delib by chance, such as one's initial place erate choice. The goal is to extend the inherited theoretical framework or method to as many aspects of language analysis as possible. As a consequence, the issue of com pat ibility with other approaches in the field need not be addressed and one's assumptions are questioned at best in connection with 'puzzling problems. ' The second approach takes the viewpoint of an objective observer and aims to survey the field as completely as possible. However, the large number of different schools, methods, and tasks necessitates a subjective selection. Furthermore, the pre sumed neutrality provides no incentive to investigate the compatibility between the elements selected. The third approach aims at solving a comprehensive functional task, with the differ To arrive at the desired solution, suitability ent approaches being ordered relative to it. and compatibility of the different elements adopted must be investigated with regard to the task at hand.

Book Natural Language Communication with Computers

Download or read book Natural Language Communication with Computers written by Leonard Bolc and published by Springer. This book was released on 1978 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 60's intelligent systems have been developed which are capable of understanding natural language sentences, of answering questions according to their knowledge bases, or of carrying out commands. In recent years, in numerous countries, in well known research institutes and government research programs, attempts have been made to develop natural language systems of communication with computers. This publication should facilitate the exchange of information concerning the present state of research in this area.

Book Understanding Language Understanding

Download or read book Understanding Language Understanding written by Ashwin Ram and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights cutting-edge research relevant to the building of a computational model of reading comprehension, as in the processing and understanding of a natural language text or story. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of reading, with contributions from computer science, psychology, and philosophy. Contributors cover the theoretical and psychological foundations of the research in discussions of what it means to understand a text, how one builds a computational model, and related issues in knowledge representation and reasoning. The book also addresses some of the broader issues that a natural language system must deal with, such as reading in context, linguistic novelty, and information extraction.

Book Foundations of Computational Linguistics

Download or read book Foundations of Computational Linguistics written by Roland Hausser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central task of future-oriented computational linguistics is the development of cognitive machines which humans can freely speak to in their natural language. This will involve the development of a functional theory of language, an objective method of verification, and a wide range of practical applications. Natural communication requires not only verbal processing, but also non-verbal perception and action. Therefore, the content of this book is organized as a theory of language for the construction of talking robots with a focus on the mechanics of natural language communication in both the listener and the speaker.

This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although, language is certainly individualized, most people conform to linguistic norms because of their surroundings. Over time, particular words and phrases are popularized by the media, social trends, or world events; and with emergence of internet technologies, the communication between all types of people is much easier. Communication and Language Analysis in the Public Sphere explores the influence of the World Wide Web on the relationships between ordinary citizens and the ability to communicate with politicians, celebrities, and the media. As some words may gain popularity worldwide, and others may begin to define a specific discipline.
