Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of Woven Fabrics Twenty years have elapsed since the appearance of my little work on "Pattern Analysis." It would speak badly for our Technical Institutes had they not carried both knowledge of the subject-matter and methods of research on to a much higher and more scientific plane during this period. That the field of knowledge has been most markedly extended and that newer and more satisfactory methods have been introduced into the d104ile Industries, the present volume bears witness to. I feel that I should not be doing justice to those who have followed me did I not here pay some tribute to the work that has been carried out by lecturers in that department of the Bradford Technical College over which I have the honour to preside, and especially to the research work of Mr. Midgley, without which the present treatise would have lost much of its value. At the time when I wrote my little treatise I could but give a skeleton-sketch of the methods whereby a fabric might not only be analysed in the Finished State but from these Finished Particulars the Loom Particulars ascertained. In the present treatise so fully are the changes from the Finished State back to the Loom Particulars for the various Standard. Cloths indicated that the designer may proceed without fear where previously he would not have ventured to tread. Mr. Midgley has also succeeded in bringing the Costing of Cloths up to a previously unthought of state of efficiency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fabric Analysis: Covering Wool, Worsted, Silk, Cotton, Artificial Silks, Etc; From Fiber to Finished Fabric The analysis of textile fabrics forms an interesting and at the same time most important subject for the designer, superintendent, manufacturer, the sales agent, as well as others connected with the textile industry. The object aimed at is to ascertain by experience, tests and calculations, full details as to the construction and characteristics of a fabric, cost of its production, etc., items which, if carefully solved, mean success. A complete fabric analysis comprises not only the pick ing out of the arrangement of interlacing warp and filling (the weave) but also ascertaining the nature of the materials the latter are composed of, their texture, quality, counts and twist of yarn used, weight of fabric per yard and amount for each different kind of yarn used in the con struction of the fabric; also the various processes commonly designated as dyeing and finishing the fabric has to be subjected to, to bring it into saleable condition for the market. This complete analysis referred to may not always be necessary, in fact the experienced designer, in his line of goods, may rely very frequently on his experience only having made similar fabrics before - and in most instances can tell at a glance the construction and average cost of fabric. Such men, however, are few, and again even such men will come in contact with fabrics not as well acquainted with; the mill may change on a different class of goods, again a designer may change his connection to a mill making a different class of goods he has been accustomed to, features which may compel him to make at least a part if not the complete analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design Texts: A Practical Treatise on Textile Design, Cloth Construction, Fabric Analysis and Calculations Weaving was practiced by the Egyptians, although little is known of their looms or the manner in which they prepared yarn for the loom. The discovery of a few wall paintings at Thebes, among which were representations of the Egyptian methods of weaving and spinning, gives us our first knowledge of ancient looms. One method was to weave the fabric in a horizontal posi tion, in fact, on the ground, the weaver sitting on the woven fabric. Vertical looms were also used, the weaver throwing the filling through the shed by means of a rod. On the end of this rod was a hook, to which the filling was attached. Two weavers were frequently employed, sitting at either side of the loom, pass ing the rod back and forth through the shed. The Greeks and Romans used vertical looms similar to the Egyptian. The cloth was woven upwards, the warp being sus pended from the top beam of the loom, and the lower ends tied in separate portions and weighted to keep the threads in tension. The filling was combed into position by means of a comb adapted for the purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
