Book Low Reynolds Number Aerodynamics

Download or read book Low Reynolds Number Aerodynamics written by Thomas J. Mueller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current interest in a variety of low Reynolds number applications has focused attention on the design and evaluation of efficient airfoil sections at chord Reynolds numbers from about 100,000 to about 1,000,000. These applications include remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) at high altitudes, sailplanes, ultra-light man-carrying/man powered aircraft, mini-RPVs at low altitudes and wind turbines/propellers. The purpose of this conference was to bring together those researchers who have been active in areas closely related to this subject. All of the papers presented are research type papers. Main topics are: Airfoil Design and Analysis, Computational Studies, Stability and Transition, Laminar Separation Bubble, Steady and Unsteady Wind Tunnel Experiments and Flight Experiments.

Book The Viscous Transonic Flow Over Two Element Airfoil Systems

Download or read book The Viscous Transonic Flow Over Two Element Airfoil Systems written by G. Volpe and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical procedure has been developed to compute the transonic viscous-inviscid interacting flow field about airfoils with leading edge slats or trailing edge flaps. The inviscid theory utilizes conformal mappings in a full potential flow formulation, with analytic removal of singularities and a mixed flow relaxation procedure. The turbulent boundary layer is computed with methods based on a turbulent kinetic energy formulation and is coupled to the inviscid flow using surface source flow boundary conditions. Semiempirical methods are used to compute local strong interaction regions occurring in the vicinity of shock waves, trailing edges, and to account for flow separation. Our results are in good agreement with existing wind tunnel data for several typical two-element airfoil configurations. (Author).

Book Transonic Airfoil Analysis and Design in Nonuniform Flow

Download or read book Transonic Airfoil Analysis and Design in Nonuniform Flow written by Jen-Fu Chang and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonuniform transonic airfoil code is developed for applications in analysis, inverse design and direct optimization involving an airfoil immersed in propfan slipstream. Problems concerning the numerical stability, convergence, divergence and solution oscillations are discussed. The code is validated by comparing with some known results in incompressible flow. A parametric investigation indicates that the airfoil lift-drag ratio can be increased by decreasing the thickness ratio. A better performance can be achieved if the airfoil is located below the slipstream center. Airfoil characteristics designed by the inverse method and a direct optimization are compared. The airfoil designed with the method of direct optimization exhibits better characteristics and achieves a gain of 22 percent in lift-drag ratio with a reduction of 4 percent in thickness.

Book Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow

Download or read book Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow written by Alexander G Kuz'min and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transonic flow occurs around moving objects as they approach and cross the sound barrier. Serious problems can occur at this point, such as shock-induced flow separation which can cause the aircraft to spin out of control. Another important practical problem is the achievement of higher aerodynamic performance of aircraft at cruise conditions, which leads to considerable fuel savings. The success in application of numerical methods for simulation of transonic flow and aircraft design depends on developments in the underlying mathematical theory. This book presents a breakthrough in the solvability analysis of boundary value problems, which makes it possible to establish convergence of finite element approximations for shock-free flow and to provide a framework for putting the existing numerical methods on a more sound basis. Also, physical aspects concerned with patterns of formation and propagation of weak shock waves are analysed. This contributes to the understanding of the extreme sensitivity of transonic flow to perturbation of freestream conditions. The developed theoretical knowledge base yields promising concepts of the airfoil design and active flow control by airfoil/wing shape modifications or suction/blowing through a perforated surface. Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow * Focuses on Computational Fluid Dynamics. * Addresses practical problems, such as airfoil design and flow control. * Presents developments made in the last two decades. In essence this is a much needed monograph for researchers and engineers in applied mathematics and numerical analysis applied to aerodynamics and for algorithm developers in Computational Fluid Dynamics in the aircraft industry. It gives design engineers the underlying mathematical theory necessary for developing new concepts for airfoil/wing design and flow control.

Book The Analysis and Design of Two Element Airfoil Configurations in Transonic Flow

Download or read book The Analysis and Design of Two Element Airfoil Configurations in Transonic Flow written by Giuseppe Volpe and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the development of numerical techniques for predicting the flow over two-element airfoil configurations, such as airfoils with a slat or a flap, at transonic speeds and for designing such airfoil systems. The effort was divided in three phases. The first phase involved the development of a method to compute the inviscid flow over these configurations. In the second phase the inviscid code was coupled to a boundary layer calculation program in order to compute the loss in performance due to viscous effects. In the third phase an inverse design code that constructs the airfoil system corresponding to a desired pressure distribution was developed. (Author).

Book Viscous inviscid Interaction in Transonic Flow

Download or read book Viscous inviscid Interaction in Transonic Flow written by Laurence Byron Wigton and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to couple an inviscid two dimensional steady transonic flow calculation with a boundary layer calculation. This interaction is especially important in transonic problems since the boundary layer has a significant effect on the inviscid portion of the flow. Here, the inviscid solution is obtained by an algorithm developed for the full potential equation by Holst and Ballhaus while the attached and separated turbulent boundary layer calculations are performed by Green's lag entrainment method. Guided by a model problem suggested by Le Balleur, a viscous-inviscid coupling algorithm is developed. Theoretical analysis indicates that it coverages rapidly for attached flows ad also performs well for separated flows. These conclusions are confirmed through a series of challenging transonic calculations involving both attached and separated flows. The coupling algorithm is remarkably stable and allows computation of coupled viscous-inviscid flows within times required to perform the inviscid calculations by themselves. (Author).
