The many excellent works already available are of three main types, general introductions to the subject, specialist discussions of analytical and laboratory techniques, and advanced theoretical treatises. In practice, in spite of the vast number of processes which have been developed for la bora tory use, 99 per cent of all ion exchange resins produced in the world are used in water treatment, or closely allied applications. This book is intended as a general survey of the principles governing the practical uses of ion exchange resins, for the benefit of students encountering the subject for the first time, and for the chemists and engineers in many branches of industry whose work brings them into contact with water treatment, but who do not have the time to study more advanced volumes of basic theory. The background presented has been simplified to the maximum extent found possible without falsification, and an attempt has been made to relate each aspect of theory to its practical consequences in full scale water treatment. Mathematical methods have been avoided and pictorial or graphical presentation methods used wherever possible. As the book is concerned with general principles, rather than details of any particular research work, references to original papers and patents have been omitted except in the cases of special processes, which have a single clearly defined origin.

Book excerpt: Ion exchangers are used for isotope separation in nuclear industry and for purification of water. The advantages of ion exchange technology consist of the possibility to remove highly diluted contaminants and their insensitivity to variations in flow and concentration. Ion exchange resins are chemically active and highly stable in their physical and chemical structure. Due to these specific properties, they will not contaminate products. The main objectives of this study were to determine the background contamination of commercially available ion exchange resins, effective pre-treatment (washing) methods, efficiency of resins in capturing various nutrients applied and the best methods for the storage of the resins. Resin rinsing with 1.0 M NaCl was highly effective, although it did not eliminate the problem of high K+ contamination in the resins. Pre-treatment with 1 M NaCl had no major effect on the absorption behaviour of NO3-. At the 20% saturation level, resin washing and fast flow of the nutrient solution certainly reduces the absorption capacity of the ion exchange resins. However, against our expectations at 80% saturation, the combined effects of washing and slow flow of nutrients increased the sorption capacity of ion exchange resins to a certain extent. The analysis of the leachate solution revealed that NH4+ and NO3- were below detection limit in the leachate solution suggesting the complete absorption of these ions by ion exchange resins irrespective of the applied nutrient concentration. The washing with 1.0 M NaCl solution seems to be the best of our treatments but there are still additional impurities from exchange resins being responsible for excessive recovery rate. Better recovery of nutrients in refrigerator treatments compared to air dry, oven dry and deep freezer recommends that this method is the best storage treatment.

The availability of spherical particles of homogeneous ion exchange resin has been exploited with the recently developed micro-standards. Analytical gas chromatography has been developed with emphasis given to the specialized needs of measuring trace contaminants in purified organic compounds including divinylbenzene, EDTA, and clinical standards such as uric acid and urea. Purification capabilities involving the use of crystallization, analytical distillation, and of the newly installed low temperature (-30C) laboratory are described. The activities of the ultra-pure reagents project, including work on the laser light scattering measurement of traces of liquid borne particulate matter, on reagent preparation, and methods of reagent storage are described. As a result, it is well-nigh impossible to prevent infiltration by the real world of even the most academic of conferences on the subject. It came as no surprise to the Scientific Board of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Mass Transfer & Kinetics of Ion Exchange" that one third of the lecturers, and one half of their advanced students, were from Industry, nor that the two round-table discussions, which specially featured industrial applications and future requirements, were well attended and enthusiastically debated.
