Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of solid materials by introducing solid test sampies directly into the graphite furnace of an atomic absorption spectrometer must be regarded as a powerful analytical approach. Even if it is - of course - not the "ultimate method". After three decades of development, the instrumentation and the methodology are available to apply solid sampling successfully for the analysis of almost every material. Moreover, several tasks cannot be solved using other analytical methods as neatly as they can using direct solid sampling. The conventional methods work more or less satisfactorily, so why do we sug gest applying solid sampling much more extensively than it is today? To begin with, the features pointed out time and again should be named: Rapidity of the analytical procedure, low susceptibility to analyte loss or contamination, very smallquantities can be analyzed, and expenditure on instrumentation and per sonell is also low. These properties are examined and the necessary conditions are discussed (Chapter 1) as are the analytical tasks (Chapter 6) for which use of this method is advantageous. Other features that are often overlooked are just as important: The simplicity of the analytical procedures allows the analyst to main tain an intimate relationship with the original scientific task that has to be solved with the analysis. Furthermore, the considerable reduction of working place haz ards and pollution by avoiding the use of chemical reagents must nowadays be assessed as a feature as important as the others.

Book Discrete Sample Introduction Techniques for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Discrete Sample Introduction Techniques for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry written by D. Beauchemin and published by Elsevier Science. This book was released on 2000 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts with a detailed description of ICP-MS, including quadruple-based, sector-based and time-of-flight instruments. Instrumentation from existing manufacturers is described and compared to show their similarities and differences. Also, a review of the ICP-MS literature is carried out to outline both the strengths and limitations of the technique, whatever its brand, as well as what it can currently accomplish in terms of applications. Then, the book demonstrates how these limitations can be reduced and/or eliminated by combining various techniques with ICP-MS. Great detail is provided on each technique so that the reader can get a good understanding of it before carrying on to the instrumental requirements for its hyphenation to ICP-MS, and the resulting impact on the operation of the hyphenated instrument. Since this book is concerned with the ICP side only, which is fairly similar in all the instruments from the different manufacturers, the information should be useful to all ICP-MS users. The features and limitations of each technique are thoroughly discussed and illustrated with a review of the ICP-MS literature. Approaches which could be used but have not yet been tried with ICP-MS are also suggested. This is particularly true of flow injection techniques which are extremely flexible and have been used extensively in atomic spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Many of the features of the technique have not yet been combined to ICP-MS, and one purpose of the book will be to point out potentially beneficial combinations.

Book Trace Metal Analysis and Speciation

Download or read book Trace Metal Analysis and Speciation written by I.S. Krull and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-10-08 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to describe the most recent advances in areas of analytical chemistry that relate to the trace determination of metals and inorganics, as well as their distribution and forms (species) present, sample dependent. Analytical approaches are described that encompass a number of separation methods, such as gas and high performance liquid chromatography, interfaced with selective and sensitive detection methods that become unique for metal species/forms present in various samples. Hyphenated techniques are emphasized, such as interfacing HPLC with plasma induced emission spectroscopy, electrochemistry, post-column reaction chemistry, etc. Each chapter describes the latest instrumental and methodology advances that utilize some form of chromatography together with element-specific detection or mass spectrometry to provide absolute identification of the specific species of a metal present in various samples. The book will be of value to those concerned with the determination of trace levels of individual metal species present or suspected present in any given sample and to those involved in trace metal toxicology, metabolism of metal-containing drugs or chemicals, environmental exposures to metals and chemical speciation of real world samples. Government regulatory laboratories striving to detect and determine absolute levels of a metal species in any regulated sample will be interested in this volume, as will academic institutes involved in environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, metal-DNA/protein interactions and researchers working with metal species.

Book Depth Profiles and Bulk Analysis of Semiconductor Materials Using ICP Mass Spectroscopy with Electrothermal Atomization

Download or read book Depth Profiles and Bulk Analysis of Semiconductor Materials Using ICP Mass Spectroscopy with Electrothermal Atomization written by William Faulkner and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the contract was to build the equipment necessary to show technical feasibility of a Demand Modulated Electrothermal Atomization System. This system was thought to have advantages over current technology as follows: 1) Prevents excessive analyte concentrations in the plasma giving the analyst control over matrix suppression effects. 2) Allows the analyst to control atomization rates and avoid buildup of deposits in the throat of the sample cone opening. 3) Allows the analyst to work in the optimum counting range for isotropic ratio work regardless of concentration variations. 4) Allows the data to be taken over the temperature dimension, thus resolving isobaric interferences as well as improving the signal to noise ratio resulting in improved detection limits across the entire mass range. Keywords: Semiconductor analysis, Depth profile, Mass spectrometry, Electrothermal atomization, Inductively coupled plasma. (MJM).

Book Determination of Trace Elements in High Purity Silver Granules Using Sector Field Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Determination of Trace Elements in High Purity Silver Granules Using Sector Field Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry written by Swarupa S. Tripathy and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trace impurities in high-purity silver granules were determined by fast scanning single collector sector field high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICPMS) after selective separation of the major matrix and silver as silver metal by hydroxylamine hydrochloride. In the filtrate, 32 major and minor metallic impurities including silver were determined using NIST SRM 1643e, Trace Elements in Water, VHG SM75 and SM90 (VHC Labs, Inc., Manchester, NH), and internal standards 7Li, 9Be, 45Sc, 72Ge, 115ln, 209Bi, and 238U. To minimize the matrix effect, reagent blank was measured and subtracted from the samples. The spectral interferences have been resolved by measuring the isotopes 55Mn, 56Fe, 75As, and 78Se in high-resolution mode (m/?m?=?10,000); 52Cr, 63Cu, and 64Zn in medium-resolution mode (m/?m?=?4,000); and others in low-resolution mode (m/?m?=?300). In the present study, the purity of the tested silver granules was found to be 99.9898?±?0.00007 % with 95 % confidence level. The purity results obtained from impurity assessment by HR-ICPMS were compared with those of the results of the conventional gravimetric method and found to be comparable. Though the gravimetric process is a primary technique for purity determination and the results obtained are directly traceable to SI units, HR-ICPMS provides more information about the impurities present in the silver granules. The proposed method is convenient, accurate, and precise and can be used for purity as well as for determination of trace impurities in silver metal.
