Book An Integral Prediction Method for Three Dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layers on Rotating Blades

Download or read book An Integral Prediction Method for Three Dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layers on Rotating Blades written by Nancy Carol Groves and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general formulation of the boundary-layer computation scheme on the surface of a rotating blade is presented. Momentum-integral methods, together with the three-dimensional entrainment equation for a rotating disk, are used to calculate the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer in an orthogonal streamline coordinate system. First-order finite-difference methods are used to solve the resulting boundary-layer equations. The unknown variables are the streamwise momentum thickness, the shape parameter, and the streamline slope at the surface. The boundary-layer calculation method is combined with existing geometrical and inviscid potential-flow computer codes for rotating blades to form an efficient turbulent boundary-layer computer code. For a given potential-flow solution, a typical boundary-layer computation requires less than 10 seconds computer time on the Burroughs 7700 high-speed computer. Boundary-layer predictions are presented for several rotating blades. Computed results are shown to be in agreement with experimental data for a simple rotating body. For the examples considered, displacement of the mid-chord point of a blade from a straight radial line is predicted to reduce the computed values of local skin friction coefficient, with an estimated increase in overall efficiency of about one percentage point. Book The Three dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layer on a Rotating Disk

Download or read book The Three dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layer on a Rotating Disk written by Daniel Digre and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers (3DTBL) are seen quite commonly in nature as well as in the engineering applications. Despite this, very few high Reynolds number studies have been carried out on these boundary layers, particularly focusing on eddy structure, eddy scales and their interactions. The current study focused on developing, characterizing and evaluating an experimental framework to study high Reynolds number #3DTBL on a rotating disk with the long-term goal of carrying out high-fidelity measurements. The rotating disk flow is characterized by weak centrifugal pumping which sets up the cross flow that leads to turbulence. The tangential and radial velocities were measured using hot-wire anemometry. The mean flow, turbulent intensity, energy spectra, skewness and kurtosis of the flow have been analyzed and compared with 2DTBL measurements. It was found that the measurements collapsed well for z/9 > 0.3-0.4 in outer scaling. Closer to the wall and in inner scaling, collapse of the data was not achieved. The main associated errors were the disk flatness, signal attenuation caused by spatial and temporal resolution challenges and hot-wire conduction close to the wall. The encountered challenges and steps taken to address these are discussed in detail.

Book The Three dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layer on a Rotating Disk

Download or read book The Three dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layer on a Rotating Disk written by William Charles Stain and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 3-dimensional turbulent boundary layer produced by a disk rotating in still air was studied theoretically and experimentally. Some of the laws governing 2-dimensional turbulent boundary layers were examined in comparison with 3-dimensional turbulent profiles of a rotating disk. It was shown that a universal description of 2-dimensional turbulent boundary layers by Cornish can be extended to very accurately describe the tangential component of a rotating disk boundary layer. It was shown that a new wake function is required to accurately describe the radial component of the 3-dimensional boundary layer. This function, the crossflow wake function, was developed and combined with Cornish's wall function to give a description of the radial velocity profile. (Author).
