Book excerpt: The Marine Corps has recently embarked on the development of a Vertical Takeoff and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (VTUAV) to replace the aging Pioneer Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system. This thesis examines the critical elements this platform must possess to effectively support small units operating in urban environments. The author addresses this issue by creating and exploring an agent-based simulation of a platoon conducting an urban patrol in a setting similar to those currently being encountered in Iraq. The platoon utilizes the VTUAV as an intelligence-gathering asset. The author designed an experiment to generate data from the simulation scenario, and then used multiple regression analysis and regression trees to relate the UAV capabilities to the patrol's operational effectiveness. The results suggest that the effectiveness of a VTUAV is greatly influenced by noise in the urban warfare environment. He uses a loss function, along with the regression models, to identify UAV configurations that improve operational effectiveness, yet are robust to uncertainties about civilian and insurgent behavior. The VTUAV must have high communication capability, as well as accurate sensing, to perform well across a range of environmental conditions. (6 tables, 27 figures, 23 refs.)

Book excerpt: VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) vehicle landing is considered to be a critically difficult task for both land, marine, and urban operations. This thesis describes one possible control approach to enable landing of unmanned aircraft systems at all attitudes, including against walls and ceilings as a way to considerably enhance the operational capability of these vehicles. The features of the research include a novel approach to trajectory tracking, whereby the primary system outputs to be tracked are smoothly scheduled according to the state of the vehicle relative to its landing area. The proposed approach is illustrated with several experiments using a low-cost three-degree-of-freedom helicopter. We also include the design details of a testbed for the demonstration of the application of our research endeavor. The testbed is a model helicopter UAV platform that has indoor and outdoor aggressive flight capability.

Book excerpt: "Unmanned aerial vehicles possessing vertical takeoff and landing capabilities are receiving growing interest within the aerospace industry, as these aircraft can be operated in areas and on missions that preclude the use of conventional aircraft. This thesis presents the development and analysis of the triple tilt-duct aircraft configuration, an aircraft design suited for future generations of VTOL UAVs. The development of a conceptual design for a small-scale, "proof of concept" tilt-duct UAV is presented, culminating in a description of the final conceptual design. The methodology for a detailed analysis of the performance and the stability and control characteristics of the tilt-duct UAV design is outlined, along with the results from these analyses. The tilt-duct UAV has good stability and handling characteristics when in horizontal flight mode, but is highly unstable when hovering or in vertical flight mode. A study of the motion of the tilt-duct aircraft during transition maneuvers between horizontal and vertical flight modes is also presented; schemes for performing optimal transition maneuvers and maintaining adequate pitch control during the transitions are given as well. A flight simulation model was utilized to test the performance and stability and control of the tilt-duct UAV. Though it was not possible to accurately simulate transition maneuvers with the software package used, it was possible to obtain reasonable measurements of the aircraft's performance and response to control inputs. An outlook for the triple tilt-duct configuration is given, along with suggestions for future research. It is felt that the triple tilt-duct configuration is a viable design for future VTOL aircraft"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: A new concept is developed for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) configured with a tip-jet driven, two-bladed, stoppable rotor and circulation control airfoils. The conceptual design of the Tipjet Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) UAV is presented, and vehicle performance is evaluated for three mid-range UAV Navy missions: Tactical Reconnaissance, Over-the-Horizon Targeting, and Combat Support Reconnaissance. Vehicle performance predictions are presented for hover and low-speed, rotary-wing flight, for conversion between rotary-wing and fixed-wing flight, and for fixed-wing flight. Requirements for shipboard support of the vehicle are outlined. Mission specific equipment is described including size, weight, and power requirements. Standard design methods are applied to conduct a detailed mission performance analysis for the conceptual design. The analysis results indicate that the 1200-1b Tipjet VTOL UAV is a viable candidate vehicle for the specified missions. Moreover, the concept is directly applicable to much larger UAVs that will greatly enhance naval warfare capabilities. Part 1 of Volume I presents the conceptual design for the Tipjet VTOL UAV along with vehicle performance analysis for the designed missions. Part 2 of Volume I presents the detailed engine and vehicle performance data. This proprietary information is available upon request to qualified agencies.

This thesis focuses on answering six questions: -What missions can UAVs perform? -What missions should UAVs perform? -What type of UAV is appropriate for each mission? -How can SOF use UAVs? -Who should own the UAV (from a SOF perspective)? -What level of control is required and where? Results include what UAV missions and types could support special operations, which of these should be performed by UAVs organic to special operations, and which should be performed by the Services' UAVs, as well as recommendations for future command and control of UAVs supporting special operations. Results are presented in matrix form for easy correlation of related factors. The thesis concludes with a twenty year pronostication of UAV development and recommends areas for future study.
