Book Analysis of Stress Transfer from the Matrix to the Fiber Through an Imperfect Interface

Download or read book Analysis of Stress Transfer from the Matrix to the Fiber Through an Imperfect Interface written by C. Galiotis and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new analysis for stress transfer from the fiber to the matrix through an imperfect interface was derived using a Bessel-Fourier series. The new analysis is specific to the fragmentation test. It satisfies equilibrium and compatibility everywhere and satisfies most boundary conditions exactly. The only approximation is the axial stress boundary condition in the fiber which is satisfied in an averaged sense rather than exactly. Two important advantages of the stress transfer analysis are that it can analyze anisotropic fibers and it can include imperfect interfaces or interphases. Theoretical predictions of stress transfer were compared to experimental Raman spectroscopy results. The predictions agree well with the experiments and they can be used to measure interface properties. The stress transfer analysis was coupled with an interfacial failure criterion to model the fragmentation test. The results of modeling fragmentation data as a function of applied strain suggested new ways of interpreting fragmentation experiments and cast doubt on the relevance of the commonly measured interfacial shear strength.

Book Characterizing the Fiber matrix Interphase Via Single Fiber Composite Tests

Download or read book Characterizing the Fiber matrix Interphase Via Single Fiber Composite Tests written by David Michael Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown, however, that interpretation approaches that include fiber-matrix debonding and fiber strength variation, while more representative of the physical fragmentation process, are unable to accurately represent the stochastic fragmentation process. Additionally, it is argued that the interfacial shear strength microvariable T(subscript)ifss does not unambiguously define matrix-fiber load absorption. A non-deterministic model and analysis (NDA) was developed for simulating the SFCF test and its attendant uncertainties, reducible and non-reducible. The NDA demonstrated that the accumulated uncertainties in SFCF testing, modeling, and interpretation contribute to a large response prediction uncertainty for T(subscript)ifss. The utility and suitability of SFCF testing is therefore questioned, especially if the results of the tests are reported without confidence intervals.

Book Failure Criteria in Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites

Download or read book Failure Criteria in Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites written by M. Hinton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-08-31 with total page 1276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced polymer composites are an extremely broad and versatile class of material.Their high strength coupled with lightweight leads to their use wherever structural efficiency is at a premium. Applications can be found in aircraft, process plants, sporting goods and military equipment. However they are heterogeneous in construction and antisotropic, which makes making strength prediction extremely difficult especially compared to that of a metal. This book brings together the results of a 12year worldwide failure exercise encompassing 19 theories in a single volume. Each contributor describes their own theory and employs it to solve 14 challenging problems. The accuracy of predictions and the performance of the theories are assessed and recommendations made on the uses of the theories in engineering design. All the necessary information is provided for the methodology to be readily employed for validating and benchmarking new theories as they emerge. Brings together 19 failure theories, with many application examples. Compares the leading failure theories with one another and with experimental data Failure to apply these theories could result in potentially unsafe designs or over design.

Book On the Determination of Fiber Strengths by In Situ Fiber Strength Testing

Download or read book On the Determination of Fiber Strengths by In Situ Fiber Strength Testing written by MC. Waterbury and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is described and experimental results given which demonstrate the feasibility of determining fiber strengths at short gage lengths by monitoring the fiber failure process during the embedded single-fiber fragmentation test. A computerized weakest link fiber model was used to perform data analysis, without making assumptions about the statistical nature of the flaw distributions. Fiber strength data at short gage lengths can be directly obtained by this technique without the necessity for extrapolation from longer specimens. A dependence on specimen fabrication technique was found, which demonstrates the necessity of careful control of fiber prestrain. Specially fabricated strain-free specimens tested by this method, the in-situ fiber strength test (ISFS), generated length-strength data that were in close agreement with conventional tension test results.
