Book Dispatches Against Displacement

Download or read book Dispatches Against Displacement written by James Tracy and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco is being eroded by waves of cash flowing north from Silicon Valley. Recent evictions of long-time San Francisco residents, outrageous rents and home prices, and blockaded "Google buses" are only the tip of the iceberg. James Tracy's book focuses on the long arc of displacement over almost two decades of "dot com" boom and bust, offering the necessary perspective to analyze the latest urban horrors. A housing activist in the Bay Area since before Google existed, Tracy puts the hardships of the working poor and middle class front and center. These essays explore the battle for urban space—public housing residents fighting austerity, militant housing takeovers, the vagaries of federal and state housing policy, as well as showdowns against gentrification in the Mission District. From these experiences, Dispatches Against Displacement draws out a vision of what alternative urbanism might look like if our cities were developed by and for the people who bring them to life. James Tracy is a Bay Area native and a well-respected community organizer. He is co-founder of the San Francisco Community Land Trust (which uses public and private money to buy up housing stock and take it out of the real estate market), as well as a poet and co-author of Hillbilly Nationalists, Urban Race Rebels, and Black Power.

The HAS analyzed development feasibility, City policies, and public investments needed to achieve the City's housing targets created through both Mayoral action and the will of the voters: build 5,000 new housing units per year, at least one third of which should be permanently affordable at low and moderate incomes. In addition, the HAS analyzed programs to preserve affordable housing and to protect and stabilize residents"--Page 1.

Download or read book Demographic Neighborhood Factors Property Physical Characteristics and House Value written by Wendy Man Yi Lin and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines factors associated with house value differentials in the nine counties in the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, San Francisco counties). Understanding the dynamics behind residential house values remains a crucial topic for many cities and regions because of the profound impact of housing affordability and homeownership towards economic stability, community well-being, and sustainable urban growth. This study performs a cross sectionl analysis, focusing on the association between demographic, neighborhood factors, physical characteristics and house values at the census tract level, controlling for median household income. Results show that median household income, inflow of out-of-state migrants, public transportation accessibility, education quality, size and age of housing are positively correlated with median house value, whereas racial composition with more non-white residents, crime rate and distance to workplace show a negative association with median house value.
