Book One Dimensional Analysis of Hall Thruster Operating Modes

Download or read book One Dimensional Analysis of Hall Thruster Operating Modes written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very simplicity of the Hall thruster structure with no screens or other control surfaces makes it difficult to understand the interrelationships which, in the end, localize and shape the various plasma regions existing in the accelerating channel. Since the radial magnetic field is usually shaped with a peak near the channel exit, the plasma structure has often been explained as simply a reflection of the magnetic field distribution. However, this is inadequate to explain the plasma dynamics inside the accelerating channel. We develop a macroscopic model gathering reliability and clarity. Quantitative accuracy in the predictions is not the main goal. Instead, emphasis is given to the consistency of the governing equations and their boundary conditions, and to include enough basic physics to illuminate the complex interplay of phenomena which shape the Hall thruster plasma. A basic model is presented along with a supplementary model of the radial interaction of the plasma with the lateral walls of the thruster. An analysis is presented of the effects of the radial plasma/wall interactions on the basic steady-state solution. The effects of heat conduction and plasma oscillations are discussed.

Book Efficiency Analysis of a High Specific Impulse Hall Thruster

Download or read book Efficiency Analysis of a High Specific Impulse Hall Thruster written by David Jacobson and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance and plasma measurements of the high-specific impulse NASA-173Mv2 Hall thruster were analyzed using a phenomenological performance model that accounts for a partially-ionized plasma containing multiply-charged ions. Between discharge voltages of 300 to 900 V, the results showed that although the net decrease of efficiency due to multiply-charged ions was only 1.5 to 3.0 percent, the effects of multiply-charged ions on the ion and electron currents could not be neglected. Between 300 to 900 V, the increase of the discharge current was attributed to the increasing fraction of multiply-charged ions, while the maximum deviation of the electron current from its average value was only +5/-14 percent. These findings revealed how efficient operation at high-specific impulse was enabled through the regulation of the electron current with the applied magnetic field. Between 300 to 900 V, the voltage utilization ranged from 89 to 97 percent, the mass utilization from 86 to 90 percent, and the current utilization from 77 to 81 percent. Therefore, the anode efficiency was largely determined by the current utilization. The electron Hall parameter was nearly constant with voltage, decreasing from an average of 210 at 300 V to an average of 160 between 400 to 900 V. These results confirmed our claim that efficient operation can be achieved only over a limited range of Hall parameters.

Book Plasma Properties in the Plume of a Hall Thruster Cluster

Download or read book Plasma Properties in the Plume of a Hall Thruster Cluster written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hall thruster cluster is an attractive propulsion approach for spacecraft requiring very high-power electric propulsion systems. This article presents plasma density, electron temperature, and plasma potential data collected with a combination of triple Langmuir probes and floating emissive probes in the plume of a low-power, four-engine Hall thruster cluster. Simple analytical formulas are introduced that allow these quantities to be predicted downstream of a cluster based solely on the known plume properties of a single thruster. Ion energy distribution functions measured using both a parallel plate electrostatic analyzer and a retarding potential analyzer are presented. A cluster of Hall thrusters is shown to exhibit dramatically different ion energy profiles compared to a single thruster. In particular, clustering causes a significant increase in the fraction of ions at energies below the primary peak in the distribution, most likely due to an increase in elastic scattering and the effects of the unique plasma potential profiles in the cluster plume.

Book A Novel Measurment of Net Erosion and Plasma material Interaction in Plasma Thrusters

Download or read book A Novel Measurment of Net Erosion and Plasma material Interaction in Plasma Thrusters written by Spenser Curtis Guerin and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lifetime of plasma thrusters is usually limited not by depletion of the propellant supply, but by erosion of the magnetic circuit from plasma particles bombarding the walls of the acceleration channel leading eventually to catastrophic engine failure. As erosion is the primary failure mode of these systems, understanding the erosion physics, plasma-material interactions (PMI), and the relationship between them is of utmost importance for extending the lifetime of high power and other next generation engines. A new measurement technique has been developed that uses lithium depth markers implanted in a thruster wall material. Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) on the implanted material gives net erosion measurements while simultaneous Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) quantifies the plasma retention and contamination in the surface layers. This insight into the surface composition and PMI is one of the major advantages of this technique when compared to other measurement methods. As an initial assessment of this technique’s applicability for plasma thrusters, it has been applied to samples of Boron Nitride exposed to the plume of a Xenon fueled BHT-200 Hall thruster and the results are presented.

Book Breathing Mode Effects on Hall Thruster Plasma Quantities and Channel Wall Power Loss

Download or read book Breathing Mode Effects on Hall Thruster Plasma Quantities and Channel Wall Power Loss written by Nadiah Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathing mode instabilities, axially-oriented waves between 5-40 kHz, have been observed in Hall thruster operation since the earliest days of experimental research, including their ability to grow large enough to extinguish the working plasma. Recent forays into higher power Hall thrusters and extended mission durations highlight the need to understand the mechanisms and consequences of the breathing mode. While experiments in the last 20 years have increased the understanding of the time dependent behavior of plasma within the channel, analytical and numerical models have struggled to accurately replicate the oscillation or predict its effects. This thesis presents a partial-D fluid model to numerically solve for plasma and neutral density, ion and electron velocity, and mass utilization in a radially- and azimuthally-symmetric SPT-type Hall thruster. After an ideal steady state solution converges, these quantities evolve in the presence of a driven sinusoidal oscillation of the electric field, which simulates a breathing mode oscillation. Separate simulations vary the frequency and amplitude of the driven oscillations to test spatial and temporal variations of the acceleration region. Then, analysis focuses on how the oscillations affect plasma quantities and key contributors to channel wall power loss. This work provides clarification on how the breathing mode perturbs the plasma and how this compares with experiments in the literature.
