This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a philosophical investigation into the relationship between religion and human happiness. The authors, George Grote and Philip Beauchamp, argue that natural religion (i.e. the belief in God based on observation of the natural world) has a positive influence on human happiness, and that this influence should be taken into account in ethical and political decision-making. This book is a thought-provoking contribution to the ongoing debate over the role of religion in public life. Book excerpt: This little-known work by Jeremy Bentham, the great English philosopher and originator of utilitarianism, was considered so controversial when it was first published in 1822 that Bentham used the pseudonym of "Philip Beauchamp." The focus of this critical treatise is "natural religion," a school of thought that maintained one could use human reason alone, unaided by faith, to deduce the will of God from the natural order. As the creator of a system that defined human happiness in terms of a moral calculus based on pleasure and pain, Bentham was quite skeptical of all claims of religion. Thus it is not surprising that the results of Bentham''s analysis of the influence of natural religion on human happiness are decidedly negative. Divided into two parts, Bentham first criticizes the major tenets of belief in a supreme being and its alleged benefits to humanity. Among these criticisms he notes the unreliability and incoherence of religion''s promises of rewards or punishments after death, especially as an inducement to good conduct in this life; its generally fuzzy concepts concerning the character and will of God; and its inefficiency in preventing commonplace human evils. In the second part, Bentham catalogues the many ways in which natural religion harms both individuals and society as a whole: it taxes the individual''s emotional well-being with the psychological burdens of fear, scruples, and gui

This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of the Influence of Natural Religion on the Temporal Happiness of Mankind HE following pages present a temperate, and I hope a satisfactory, examination of the temporal good or evil produced by Natural Religion. The topic is of um speakable importance, and has by no means met with the attention which it deserves. It has indeed scarcely ever been separately considered, and those who have contro verted the truth of religion have suffered themselves with but little opposition to be decried as inflicting the deepest injury upon humanity - as corrupting the most effectual source both of rectitude and of consolation - and as robbing mankind of doctrines, which, supposing they were false, ought nevertheless to have been invented and inculcated. Such has been the current opinion on the subject: and it need not he remarked how strong must have been the inclination of an audience so prepossessed, to support that which they regarded as the firmest tie and protection of society. It is therefore essentially requisite, before the question as to the truth of religion can be brought to a fair' and unbiassed decision, to estimate correctly the advantages or disadvantages which result from its adoption. If the esti mate of these advantages drawn up by its advocates be really well-founded, we may safely pronounce that no anti religious writer could possibly make a convert, even though he were armed with demonstration as rigorous as that of Euclid. This is discussed with reference to the notion of natural religion to illustrate certain aspects of deism and its legacy. Originally published in 1989.
